Pledging never to relent and to destroy President Trump, Ontario Premier Doug Ford placed a 25% tariff on all electricity delivered to the United States. After announcing the tariff Ford said, “It needs to end. Until these tariffs are off the table, until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario will not relent,” Ford said.
President Trump has found out about the Ontario tariff and has responded, big time:
President Trump made the following announcement:
“Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th.
Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous.
I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA!
Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue.
The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that.
The artificial line of separation drawn many years ago will finally disappear, and we will have the safest and most beautiful Nation anywhere in the World — And your brilliant anthem, “O Canada,” will continue to play, but now representing a GREAT and POWERFUL STATE within the greatest Nation that the World has ever seen! (more)
As previously noted, President Trump has a massive amount of economic leverage he can bring to bear on Canada from multiple simultaneous sectors, including autos, banking and finance.
Canada has a very small number of economic responses that can be triggered against the USA; however, some of their initial retaliatory effort is not tariffs but rather full-blown Canadian import bans of certain US products.
Minnesota Power bought only about $300,000 worth of electricity from Ontario last year, and only for four months out of the year. The utility serves over 150,000 customers, mostly with power it generates itself in Minnesota.
Matt Helms, public information of officer for the Michigan Public Service Commission, said the impact on Michigan customers is likely to be “small” and most of Michigan’s electricity is produced by utility companies in the state or through long-term contracts. (source)

Understand Canada plans on boycotting any of Elon’s products.
From what I understand Starkink is one of the top internet and phone service in Canada, especially in the very remote areas. This is going to get quite interesting since there is not really any other service many of the Canada’s northern citizens. These northern residents might be only a small portion of the population but they still need a decent mode of communication.
Starkink, tell me more! 🤩
Yeah, but it’s the “hydro” part that makes it essential for Minnesota’s renewable portfolio standards. 25% of energy use has to be clean, or steep fines are involved. Trump just created scarcity in their green energy plans.
According to breaking news Ontario has backed down from their electricity bluff.
Mexico and Canada better quit bluffing and look at their cards…….hint they have none.
FAFO.
As I said in my comment yesterday, Trump may have arrows in his quiver, but Canada has some economic nukes. And, Doug Ford sent a hand grenade as a warning, and NY, and other northern states were already screaming at Trump. A 50% surcharge on all electricity from Canada would mean hell for America.
US industries and consumers would be catastrophically affected with power blackouts, brownouts and complete outages were ALL the electricity cut from Canada to the US.
That means no electricity from Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and BC.
No wonder Trump told Commerce secretary Lutnick to call Doug Ford and negotiate. Trump smartly read the writing on the wall.
President Trump said that it would take a minimum of 2 years to build enough power plants to replace what the US buys from Canada. And that is being optimistic.
Canada stooping low????? Trump started this trade war, not Canada. Trump expecting Canada to not fight back when being attacked like this is very short sighted of him.
Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Sadz all around.
Being attacked? trump just wants to level the playing field (recipical tariffs) and be energy independent.
castastrophically affected? I think you are totally misreading this room. Much like Zelensky in the White House.
DugFord on Teh Newsmax. He seems so much softer today? Weird.
Sad Saps haz sadz!
I’ve never seen a more over the top emotional manipulation assault than that delivered by putative Canadians these past several days, very professionally done, serious Derp skillz selling endless sorrow, but still transparent as Hell.
Total Snow Job.
Trump: That will be 50%. Checkmate!
Doug Ford: We was just FUNNIN’ with ya!! No electricity surcharge!
(Ya can do this with poker as the meme, too. The first word that entered my mind was “Checkmate”, as in, game over.)

@RapidResponse47
Commerce Secretary
@howardlutnick
says President Trump — “the best dealmaker ever to sit in that chair” — is putting on a clinic in using tariffs as a negotiating tool.
“And then all of the sudden, shockingly, they respond!”

Someone should remind President Trump that America gets some of our electricity from Mexico.
U.S. electricity imports from Mexico in selected years from 2000 to 2024
https://www.statista.com/statistics/189033/us-electricity-imports-from-mexico-since-1999/
Baja California and California area already linked through a binational electricity system. That network is part of the Western Interconnection, which stretches from Western Canada to Baja California in Mexico
Is that why CA can not get rid of all the solar electricity they are generating, now Donna in Oregon ,where is all the electricity in your home coming from, now stop with your own personnel vendetta.
In the winter Ca has excess power. Come summer when all the air conditioners kick on. The problems start.
That is when they must draw power from other areas like Mexico, Nevada, and other western states.
Please…
As a kid, I saw the Oroville Dam being completed…
Hydro electric capabilities and all…
Power generation in CA has never been an problem whatsoever…
State Government control over power generation however…
Therein lies the rub.
How is Gavin Newsome still walking the Earth as a free man ?
Asking for a friend.
In God We Trust
Trust God
Fear not
I have also wondered about that.
So?
Time we supply Americans with AMERICAN produced electricity. Whether you realize it or not…neither CANADA nor MEXICO are our friends.
Do we really want Canada as the 51st state? They’ll just be another California and drag down the rest of the US.
Let the liberal enclaves of Ontario plus Quebec and maybe another Eastern Provence be the new Canada with everything else the 51st state. I don’t think Canadians will disapprove when they discover the Constitutional rights they will receive and the relief from the totalitarian policies of the current Canadian government in addition to lower taxes.
May I move to America? I live in Nova Scotia and never voted Liberal! If not, please let us clone Trump.
I live in Nova Scotia and I would love to move to the amazing America! Bar that, could you clone President Trump so we can finally recover from the demon who has been running Canada?? He must go to his own home country!! Cuba!!
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is a good replacement for Trudeau and Carney.
Does Doug Ford realize that Canada puts high tariffs on a whole host of U.S. goods and industries?
He doesn’t like it when Trump seeks an even playing field. And Trump hasn’t put on any 250% tariffs like Canada does on U.S. dairy products.
I’m in Nova Scotia and I didn’t know Canada did that! EFF Canada!!! God please give us a Trump too!!!
Mr. President. In your tariff war with Canadian companies, what tariff rate are you placing upon Pornhub?
We don’t need electricity from any other countries. The dependency is a national security risk. Our goal must be energy independence. If the tariffs will drive us in that direction, then I am all for it. It will take a long time to undo the damage imposed by the globalists. We must stay the course.
Immediate attention must be paid to updating our ancient electrical grid system. Have said so for years. As a country we are ignoring our own treasures, our worst enemy is ourselves.
On August 14, 2003, the United States and Canada experienced the largest electrical power blackout in North American history. It was a massive power outage that affected parts of the northeastern U.S. and eastern Canada.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northeast_blackout_of_2003
Living in MI at the time, East of Flint 40 minutes, we had ‘power’ thru the whole of the ‘2003 Blackout’, apparently Canada is connected to our ‘Grid’ in this area.
I though Tariffs were for trade imbalances used on ‘imports’, not exports like Canada, who their ‘Premier of Ontario’ Doug Ford who claims Canadians ‘love’ America.
Your power likely came from Consumers. They protected all their electrical generation and distribution equipment properly, outstate. Detroit Edison didn’t, and had massive blackouts.
This is a take probably echoed a few times in here, but just to say in general, I like Canada and I’ve had zero issues with just about every Canadian I’ve ever met left/right/center. They are by and large, great folks. Their gov’t, currently anyway, needs work… just like ours does.
To all of our Canadian friends, this is all very unfortunate, but know that it isn’t about you, per se. This feels like a rough sibling-rivalry kind of situation in some respects.
Having said all that, not sure Canada wants to be the 51st. I’ve heard few Canadians expressing this notion other than out of some current frustration they may be dealing with at home vis. their government.
I’m in Nova Scotia and I don’t feel targeted by Trump! I wish and pray we have or own Trump but alas, unless you kindly clone him… My house would LOVE to be part of America!! No carbon tax!!!
If you feel that strongly about Trump and the US, then maybe consider moving there.
We dont want foreigners!!! Thats the point…only real, original Americans in this country.
Doug Ford is a real POS. Ran as a staunch conservative in 2018 and then turned on Ontarians as soon as the COOF came along – pushing jabs, dictating ridiculous mandates and then heading out skidooing with his buddies, which he was caught doing after demanding everyone stay home.
He’s been a BBF with Castreau and the Liberals ever since and just praised him upon his ‘resignation’ (though he’s still not gone!)
Ford just won his third massive majority in a snap election because Ontarians are scared to death of what another Liberal or NDP will do to the province, even though Ford governs exactly the same.
Ontario is so screwed. And now he’s taken it upon himself to drag the rest of the country down.
However, I say “Bring it on!” Let’s get this demolition over with.
Yes. I’m in Nova Scotia and agree. Then maybe I can move to America and have a real leader looking after my interests. I don’t even trust Pierre! Wish Max had more seats, Support
Bon Voyage! I am sure the US will welcome you with open arms!
The elephant in the room regarding US tariffs on Canada, is that they mainly affect Quebec and Ontario. That is why Doug Ford, Trudeau’s lackey, is retaliating so hard.
Quebec has essentially been a no-show in the news thus far because they know they own Trudeau and that he will financially bail them out and support them no matter what….and to the detriment of Western Canada.
Justine and the Liberal Party cannot win any federal election without Quebec and much of Ontario, which are the most populated provinces. Thus, Trudeau will buy their votes by funnelling a non-stop flow of money to their industries and corporations. Meanwhile, the West must sink or swim on its own. Alberta and Saskatchewan are economically very strong despite this lack of support.
Westerners despise Trudeau, the Liberal Party and Eastern Canadians. The premiers of Alberta and Sask are staying somewhat removed from the Trudeau’s response to US tariffs, and instead are working to tone down the rhetoric and to keep their own trade bridges open with the US.
Canada cannot afford Doug Ford. He will help lead Canada into U.S.A. statehood. Maybe when he shows he can manage his own weight can Canada have confidence that he can manage Ontario.
Canada needs to split down the middle. BC (with the tree huggers tossed in the pacific) Alberta and Saskatchwan, NWT and the Yukon, together with the US would be a powerhouse.
Screw Morontario and that French place and build a strong Conservative country.
MORONTARIO along with Quebec has ALWAYS been a bunch of whiny crybabies.
