Pledging never to relent and to destroy President Trump, Ontario Premier Doug Ford placed a 25% tariff on all electricity delivered to the United States. After announcing the tariff Ford said, “It needs to end. Until these tariffs are off the table, until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario will not relent,” Ford said.

“Based on Ontario, Canada, placing a 25% Tariff on “Electricity” coming into the United States, I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. This will go into effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th.
Also, Canada must immediately drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has long been considered outrageous.
I will shortly be declaring a National Emergency on Electricity within the threatened area. This will allow the U.S to quickly do what has to be done to alleviate this abusive threat from Canada. If other egregious, long time Tariffs are not likewise dropped by Canada, I will substantially increase, on April 2nd, the Tariffs on Cars coming into the U.S. which will, essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business in Canada. Those cars can easily be made in the USA!
Also, Canada pays very little for National Security, relying on the United States for military protection. We are subsidizing Canada to the tune of more than 200 Billion Dollars a year. WHY??? This cannot continue.
The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State. This would make all Tariffs, and everything else, totally disappear. Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem, and the greatest and most powerful nation in the World will be bigger, better and stronger than ever — And Canada will be a big part of that.

Canada has a very small number of economic responses that can be triggered against the USA; however, some of their initial retaliatory effort is not tariffs but rather full-blown Canadian import bans of certain US products.
Minnesota Power bought only about $300,000 worth of electricity from Ontario last year, and only for four months out of the year. The utility serves over 150,000 customers, mostly with power it generates itself in Minnesota.
Matt Helms, public information of officer for the Michigan Public Service Commission, said the impact on Michigan customers is likely to be “small” and most of Michigan’s electricity is produced by utility companies in the state or through long-term contracts. (source)

It’s a good objective to have though.
That characteristic would be one of the requirements for admittance as a state.

Until then, it is all managed as a territory, some regions might remain so indefinitely.

Maybe I am naive in my understanding about what the initial plan of the tariff pressures were that President Trump had in mind, but I thought this was all about trying to put pressure on the Canadian government to do more to stop illegal immigration along with the drug/human trafficking on our northern border?

There is even more economic leverage available. Every day workers flow across the border by the thousands to work in the USA. Here in the Detroit area there are many working at the auto companies (engineers, technicians, and line workers) and hospitals (nurses, technicians, etc.). I imagine schools and colleges as well. I imagine that this goes on along the entire border from sea to shining sea.
Back in 2005 Canadian immigration made me sit on a hard bench for 4 hours because my company sent me to Ontario to work at an auto plant. The immigration officer kept asking me about every 15 minutes if I was ‘ready to go home yet.’ I sat there until the next shift arrived and they processed me through the border. None of my coworkers traveling to that plant that day made it past the rouge immigration officer that was doing this because ‘her husband was an engineer and was unemployed so why should I let you take his job?’
Revoke their work visas and let these USA companies hire US Citizens from the USA. America First!

I was US national sales manager for a small Canadian company. They asked me to work the booth at the Canadian Gas Association trade show. Coming across the border, the mounties almost wouldn’t let me in because they kept asking if I was going to work in Canada, did I have a work visa, could a Canadian do the job, blah blah blah.
That’s been the Canadian mode of operation for decades. They are much more upfront about foreign nationals doing business in their country, mostly for tax purposes, than the U.S. They’re looking for potential income tax payers. They were also much more in your face security mode at airports in the late 1980s than the US was.

I guess that explains why the Canadian government is willing to start a trade war with the US rather than crack down on the fentanyl trafficking at the US border, which is said to largely be an enterprise driven by China. There must be big money that is finding its way into their personal bank accounts. DOGE would not have jurisdiction over investigating the money laundering that would need to occur there, just the grift going to US politicians over this issue.
Canada is so corrupt that they literally have a form of money laundering named after them, i.e. the “Vancouver Model.” Canada certainly shares the same corruption problems as Mexico.

Madness! Blowhard Premier Ford “pauses” tariffs on electricity to the U.S. and P Trump removes 25% of the threatened 50% tariff on steel and aluminum. This back and forth reminds me of disputes when I was a kid. What happened to actual trade talks.
Premier Ford is considered a buffoon outside of Ontario where he was easily re-elected Premier. They believed his boasting threats but Conservatives in the rest of Canada waited for the inevitable Trump response.
Now if Trump can make new PM Carney look as dumb and as foolish as he did Ford, then maybe the Poilievre Conservatives will regain some votes lost by those that were misled and unwisely impressed with Liberals and goofs like Ford making foolish threats against Trump. Many of us have seen Trump’s resultant long line of losers.
I might be dreaming but I think Trump and Poilievre would calm down this madness and actually negotiate reciprocal and fair trade. But Trump will have to be able to claim a victory in some way like he did when he signed the USMCA
