I home-schooled my two kids for four years, middle school and high school, and also paid for private schooling at a classical Christian school for most of the other years. It was a sacrifice, as we are not wealthy by US standards. The BIGGEST challenge was finding curriculum that agreed with our worldview, and I tried many. Eclectic would best describe the assortment, which would change from year to year.
Writing and English were very hard to find good curriculum. I ended up using 1950’s-1960’s editions of Warriner’s English Grammar and Composition (observation: the sentences themselves, apart from the actual lesson being taught, reveal the worldview!).

Eliminate federal funding for college education. Local governments already fund K-12, and that should be enough to turn every capable student into a fully functioning member of society, sufficient to be employed in any job that does not require what today takes a college degree + professional board exams + licensing. Apprenticeships would be accessible by any competent high school grad.
Now, that’s an impossibility at the present time, because K-12 produces crap in the main. That said, it needs to change…and fast.
Anyone who needs college can
1) work and save money (becomes a fiscal voter)
2) attend when sufficient savings have accrued (becomes a frugal shopper of tuition)
3) find a sponsor
4) attend on scholarship
Tuition would be cheap in that scenario, because there will be LOTS of competition for students and far too many colleges in operation.
Finally, the parents and students of K-12 schools will then realize 12th grade is IT. Better be a competent grad, and the school had better be solid academically, or it’s going to be a rough life. That would be the end of teachers unions, wonderfully.

As a History teacher (Ancient, Medieval, European, and American) I cannot tell you how many completely lazy and incompetent “teachers” of History I have encountered in my nearly 50-year career, many of them coaches of various sports who – like the “History teacher” coach in the old comic strip Funky Winkerbean who never noticed that the lights in his room had been burned out for years, because he was always showing movies – thought History began with and ended with World War II.
The other kind of “History teacher” was the Leftist bent on spreading his anti-American agenda. I was able to talk throughout the years at Advanced Placement/College Board conferences with teachers like myself, frustrated by the majority of their colleagues at their schools who thought showing movies and talking about last week’s game sufficed for a course in History!
The result is about 2 1/2 generations among whom far too many are either ignorant of far too many important things necessary for a functioning democratic republic or, possibly worse, are actively hostile to their own traditions and country.
Those who know the History of Communism, those who have lived in such circumstances, know the dangers in thinking that any kind of “version of Socialism” or “reform of Communism” might be possible.
Evil cannot be tinkered with or reformed: it remains evil. One must uproot it, destroy it, and plant something entirely different and opposite from it.
I’m both glad and troubled to hear your comments. My daughter is at college now working on a history degree. Her ultimate goal is to be a museum archivist. But I worry about all this slanted history they teach. I’m trying to keep her balanced, make sure she gets other info. But if it doesn’t come from something “official” like a textbook, she discounts it.

She said that she had not heard about it. This is why the younger generation is so ignorant. This is why they are clueless. We raised them in a conservative household, but when they all went to college, they were indoctrinated into the leftist ideology. They all watch CNN/MSNBC. Yes, guest, 100% agree. My adult children’s problem with everything is that they have no God in their lives. Therefore, this skews their whole perspective on everything including how to solve problems, how to treat others, and how to view the world. Without God in their lives, they are poor, even though they see themselves as rich. They have nothing. I pray everyday for the conversion of all souls, especially my children’s. And I pray that one day they will wake up to recognize and accept God’s grace in their lives.

I was an A.P. European History “Reader” i.e. grader for the examination, and most of us in the field were appalled by the creation of the “World History” course.
“World History” was bound to be superficial, without depth, and easily diverted into political correctness and a Leftist agenda.
I am sorry to those who teach World History, but it is irrelevant at that age! The Chinese in ancient times and medieval times and early modern times are fascinating…but they do not participate in the creation of Modern Times!
Modern Times have been created by people from roughly five countries: Italy, Spain, France, German Central Europe, and England, with occasional contributions from others, like America, the main descendant of those countries..
Columbus was not Chinese or Egyptian, Galileo was not from Arabia, Newton and Leibniz and Pasteur and Edison and the Wright Brothers were not from Japan or South America. Cicero was a Roman, Aristotle a Greek, John Locke was an Englishman, as was Edmund Burke: if they had been born anywhere else, the world would not be the way it is today.
And so, before American children learn any kind of “World History,” they must FIRST learn OUR history, which means that they start with the Greeks and Romans, progress through the Germanic Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and into Modern Times, i.e. the History of both Western Europe AND America after 1492.
Once they have absorbed that epic story, a salient one containing every right and wrong political and cultural path possible, only then can they worry about what the Bantus were doing in Africa and the Aztecs in Mexico.

When my daughter talks about world history with me (which is not often), she does put that leftist spin on it, especially heavily centered on the Communist Chinese history, Communist Russian history, and Islamic history. Never do I hear her talking about the subjects you mentioned, Western Europe and America after 1492. There is a relatively new course called “AP Human Geography” which probably can be easily slanted to leftist ideology. And I have no idea what it is. I appreciate your sharing your knowledge in these subjects. I was wondering what had happened to the history education that I received in high school and college in the 1970’s. I would like this comment 1000 times if I could!! My oldest son has his BA in History and has forgotten more than most Americans will ever know. His Senior Thesis was on the War on the Eastern Front during WWII so he is able to explain clearly and with specific examples on the absolute evil of those who were fighting to take over entire nations. He is currently a police officer, a job to which he knows that he has been called, but wants to eventually go back and get his Master’s and teach High School or College History when his time on the force is done.

I remember a high school teacher I had, in the Bay Area, of all places, who asked me if I was willing to share my grade with all the other students. I was a bit embarrassed to be put on the spot like that, and didn’t want to seem selfish, but I agreed with the point he was making, which is that it’s human nature for people to expect to gain according to the effort they put into something. Without that expectation, the motivation for the effort decreases significantly.

Born, bred, and raised in Miami here. Many of my classmates fled Cuba during the early Sixties, many whose parents put them on a plane bound for America with the wild hope their children would find a better life. Imagine being a 10 year-old, flying for the first time, with no parent, no command of another language, and no idea what waited for you when you arrived. This happened to a lot of Cuban kids; they made their way either with families already here or through the foster system.
These “kids” are now in their 70’s and they cannot forget the terror they experienced leaving their homeland nor can they forget how they found a better life in a capitalistic America and they remain grateful for their freedom.

My father immigrated from Europe after WW2. He had the same message. Hitler’s troops did not invade his quiet town, his country – citizens lined the streets to watch, some to welcome. He told us that radio, the schools, the politicians for years had sold the utopian promise of socialism.

Interestingly – when I was in high school in the 70’s here in SoFla – there was a MANDATORY 40 hour block of “Americanism vs Communism” (mandated by state legislation).
Obviously because of our proximity to Cuba – and the still recent revolution – where “ousting a dictator” (Batista) turned a beautiful (yet flawed) country into an island prison.
The course module was (obviously) slanted towards “americanism” – and was viewed as “propaganda” by many (including many teachers).

The above quote – was in a textbook PUBLISHED IN 1963. Sound familiar?

Besides the obvious stories from Cuba, Old Warsaw Pact and WWII escapees, there are also stories from other “benevolent” Socialist Countries like Greece. There were a few of my wife’s friends who grew up in Socialist Greece with stories that are very similar, to those from the harsher totalitarian versions. Their parents brought them to the US to “escape” socialism, even in Greece.
There other Western Euro tales, social democrats or labor party movements, hat echo the Greek situation.

Colleges and Universities has by and large nothing but a total scam. I see signs along the freeway “Welders Wanted” “Mechanics Wanted” “Fabricators Wanted” “Truckers Wanted”.
I never see signs “Professors Wanted” or “Teachers Wanted”. The most overrated is a 21-22 year old with a College or University degree……..it gets down to “Too much school damn fool”.

The left is pushing the same old marxism, but with prettier packaging along with a decorative bow. The ignorant are excited to open their Christmas present thinking their new found freedom means no worries about expenses, transportation, etc, which will give them more time to do what they want. Unfortunately they didnt read the fine print detailing the real cost of having a govt. take care of your every want and need.
Its sad that Mr. Alvarez has to remind US citizens of what its like to live under oppression, but if you were to show a progressive his speech, they will tell you that it would never happen here.
But but the little little snowflakes will be happy right up until it’s their turn to turn in their friends and neighbors over something stupid but under those regimes may result in death. Then they will bitch they have no freedom and they can’t say what they used to, not to mention the stores were better stocked and they could afford food but not now. When my mother left Cuba she was only allowed to bring 1 single item and the clothes on her back. The family couldn’t even give away their belongings to neighbors or Cubans in need- the government took it all. I have a few first generation friends voting Biden and I can’t understand why, it’s like they forgot the horror stories from parents and grandparents.
Every bit as powerful and moving as it was when we saw it live during the convention. “There is no place else to go”… the weight President Trump carries on his shoulders right now is just immense…
Cubans know first hand how communism is implemented from the top down, driven by wealthy elites and a media propaganda machine to replace truth with leftist mythology.
Castro was financed and promoted by Cuban elites – rich, clueless, virtue signaling leftists with dreams of a socialist utopia. When he came to power, these useful idiots turned a blind eye to Castro’s emerging dictatorship, then were soon discarded as Castro consolidated power and turned Cuba into a police state.
In the US, Castro was adored by Eastern elites and US media figures, many of whom eagerly propagandized on his behalf. The NY Times, via leftist journalist Herb Matthews, almost single handedly created the hero-worshiping Castro myth, by running a series of profiles of Castro as a romantic rebel holed up in the Sierra Maestra mountains. These articles were devoured by American leftists and cemented the hero-worshiping Castro mystique.
Leftists in the State Dept quietly paved the way for Castro to seize and consolidate power. From 1958 on, these elements either ignored or explained away this nightmare regime – and do so to this day.
Fidel and Raul Castro destroyed Cuba; they were eager to receive Soviet nuclear missiles, nearly precipitating nuclear armageddon; they attempted to undermine and destroy nations from Latin America to Africa. Che Guevara was a murderous thug who personally supervised mass executions and hoped to export the Castro dictatorship around the world.
And yet, Fidel and Che are mythic heroes to the American left, which refuses to acknowledge what these monsters did and the poisonous ideology that enables them to do it.
Alvarez knows all of this can be replicated in the US, and knows that it must be stopped.

Fifty-seven years ago this November 22nd, the Deep State used the ultimate weapon, assassination, to take over our government. They’ve been in charge ever since. Now, my generation that witnessed this atrocity, along with many of the younger generations, are poised to take our country back from the Deep State. Even if we do, the war will not be over. There will be more battles ahead. But this battle, the election, MUST be won at all costs. We don’t know what will happen in the next few days and we may be called on to do more than vote. We Americans are very fortunate that we have had so many immigrants from Communist/Fascist countries over the years. They’ve been sounding the alarm for a while……and it looks like many people are finally listening!
I think I have watched this 10 times including during Republican Convention. I still cannot get past the final few lines without a tear. God bless this man and his love of this country. And, god bless President Donald Trump.
