Farmers under attack
Periodically, I read articles that say there is a shortage of veterinarians for domestic pets….and domestic pet owners make appointments and go the the vet’s office in their own car….
Farmers and ranchers will have to depend on the vet to make ‘house’ (ranch, barn, farm calls)….not sure of the financial logistics, but I imagine it will be heavily painful to the smaller family farmer/rancher. And how will it impact the Amish?
just a couple of notes, AG :
large and small animal veterinarians are separate entities nowadays.
most dvm/vmd students pick a “track” early on and will only have a couple of brief introductory courses outside their chosen concentration.
very, very few will enter a “mixed” practice (large and small animal).
it’s a shame, as their is much transferrable knowledge to be had on both sides.
also, large animal veterinarians are, and have been for quite some time, predominately mobile.
their vehicle is equipped with most everything they need to make calls, including some surgeries.
in cases where there is a need for in-clinic care, the animal is usually transported by the owner in their own trailer.
i do suspect the ranks of large animal vets are shrinking.
not as easy as treating S.A. dermatology cases 4 days a week in an air conditioned, 9a to 5p, spanking new facility (not a slam, just an observation😉😂).
Amish do seek veterinary care if needed, although they handle quite a bit of it themselves.
a little different perspective among the Amish folks i have met, treatment goals are geared towards returning the animal to PRODUCTIVE health.
herd health is another story. the rancher in the video is basically saying he should not be regulated out of taking the best care of his animals that he possibly can.
the examples of OTC care products he cites, like dewormers, anti-parasitic drenches, etc. , are used on a regular rotation to keep his livestock happy and in peak health.
he is right to be concerned.
USDA is not immune to political bureaucrats and ideological – not best care – protocols.
no doubt there is movement afoot to curtail his ability to raise cattle.
I raise toy poodles. Most breeders treat as much at home as we can. We WERE buying fish antibiotics, that’s banned now, have to have prescription. Most preppers , me included (small scale) keep the fish antibiotics in our prepper storage. My vet clinic of 18 years treats everything. The owner sold out to corporate about 2 years ago. The clinic has gone to hell in a hand basket. Their 24/7 service is not guaranteed anymore. I have C sections or rattlesnake bites in the middle of the night. It worries me greatly of having to try to find a vet at 2 am. And now they say no more dewormers over the counter!! That 4 letter agency has made it harder for reputable breeders to sell puppies. It has put crappy breeders out of business. Instead of following the law, in Texas those breeders just dump their whole kennel of dogs out in the country! I’m small scale and my few dogs are house pets.
Some people don’t want us to have pets.
