WASHINGTON DC – The head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division says the “next generation” of civil rights challenges includes addressing racial disparities in school discipline; defending the rights of LGBT Americans; combating discrimination in housing and in lending; protecting women from sexual assault and harassment; ensuring the fair treatment of youth in the juvenile justice system; and defending the right to vote in the 21st Century.
“In recent months, the Civil Rights Division has reached landmark consent decrees involving each of these issues,” Jocelyn Samuels, the acting assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, told a civil rights symposium in Indianapolis on Tuesday. (more…)

My personal opinion on this might shock some people – so I’ll delay and join in the conversation in the comments section.   HatTip Chip Bennett:  

Rachel Canning is an 18-year-old High School senior now suing her parents for kicking her out of the house.    She is seeking financial “child support”, payment for final year tuition of private High School, and payment for all college tuition expenses she will incur.

While the case might seem extreme, it highlights a very specific consequence of helicopter parenting, spoiling children, choosing to be more of a “friend” than a parent, and a complete lack of teaching fundamental responsibilities in the age of post millenials. 

To quote her father, Sean Canning:

“I’m a liberal, liberal parent,” he said. “I wish I could have grown up in my house. I was tougher on my cops at work than I’ve ever been at my home, that’s for sure.”  (link)

Today a New Jersey Judge denied the initial request however another hearing is scheduled for next month where Rachel could win the lawsuit against her parents.   Essentially her argument is “they created my ideology and dependency – ergo they are now responsible to fulfill their obligations to me which arrive as a consequence of my upbringing”.

Believe it or not, it’s quite possible young Ms. Rachel Canning will win this lawsuit.   While it sounds incredulous on its face – her argument is fundamentally solid from the progressive point of view.    Her parents created her extreme dependency – just because they no longer wish to accept the consequences of their earlier decisions, does not mean they can just cast her aside.   They created this monster. ( Via BLAZE )Now that tens of thousands of gun owners in Connecticut are in direct violation of a hastily-passed gun control law, a video of a fed-up Navy veteran warning lawmakers that he “will not comply” with the law is just going viral.

As previously reported by TheBlaze, as many as 100,000 gun owners technically became felons overnight because they chose not to register their semi-automatic rifles and/or high-capacity magazines.

A man, identified as John S. Cinque, reportedly appeared at a public meeting in North Haven, Conn., on April 22, 2013, to confront lawmakers over the gun control law.

Cinque started by asking if the bill would have done anything to prevent the tragic Sandy Hook shooting. Eventually, Connecticut State Rep. David Yaccarino (R) replied, “maybe not.”  (read more)

GOOD NEWS !  On Tuesday, the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) announced a drastic turnaround on the part of the federal government: The German Romeike family, which sought asylum in the United States to home-school their children, will now be allowed to stay in America.

“The Romeikes can stay!!!” the HSLDA announced on its Facebook page.

Traditionally, the U.S. military has always enjoyed high approval ratings from the American public at large – they support the military in funding; in its non-combat humanitarian missions as diplomatic outreach (such as the US Navy Hospital Ships, USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy); and are, for the most part, proud of the work that the US military does in defending freedom and the highest ideals of “America” –

individual liberty, peace, free trade, domestic stability among the many hallmarks of the “shining city on the hill”.  In very few other countries, do so many citizens have direct experience – having served, themselves – or a first degree relative connection to someone who has served in the armed forces. As first reported by the Army Times, a US Army Pfc (Private, First Class) posted an Instagram “selfie” (“sheffeynation”) of herself hiding in her car during the sounding of “Retreat” to avoid standing at attention, saluting and rendering honors to the American flag as the colors are lowered for the day.

Muslim print shop stores will now be open to litigation if they refuse to depict their prophet Mohammed on customer T-Shirts.  Muslim restaurant owners are now open to litigation if they refuse to make Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwiches….. oh yeah, and Catholics business owners are now open to civil rights litigation if they refuse to participate in same sex marriage activities…..

(Raw Story) – After days of protests and criticism levied against her state, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) said on Wednesday that she vetoed SB 1062, which would have effectively legalized discrimination based on religious grounds.

Brewer said she had not heard of one example of religious freedoms being attacked without the bill, considered it broadly worded, and did not address any specific concerns.

She further said that SB 1062 “has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve” and would be divisive “to a degree that no one would ever want.” (read more)

A UCLA student burst into tears and launched into a mostly incomprehensible anti-Israel rant on Wednesday after her fellow students voted to defeat a student council resolution aimed at divesting from the Jewish state.

UCLA’s student council defeated the boycott resolution by a vote of 7 to 5 following an all-night session, according to the blog Legal Insurrection.

USA TODAY – America’s ruling class has been experiencing more pushback than usual lately. It just might be a harbinger of things to come.

First, in response to widespread protests last week, the Department of Homeland Security canceled plans to build a nationwide license plate database. Many local police departments already use license-plate readers that track every car as it passes traffic signals or pole-mounted cameras. Specially equipped police cars even track cars parked on the street or even in driveways.

The DHS put out a bid request for a system that would have gone national, letting the federal government track millions of people’s comings and goings just as it tracks data about every phone call we make. But the proposal was suddenly withdrawn last week, with the unconvincing explanation that it was all a mistake. I’m inclined to agree with TechDirt’s Tim Cushing, who wrote: “The most plausible explanation is that someone up top at the DHS or ICE suddenly realized that publicly calling for bids on a nationwide surveillance system while nationwide surveillance systems are being hotly debated was … a horrible idea.” (more…)

If you want to use a walk-off homer to silence the insufferable leftists on the issue of Gay Rights vs. Religious freedom simply ask the following question of the Anderson Coopers and watch them squirm:

If the owner/operator of a “Quick Print” media printing shop is Muslim, and I walk in there with a template image depicting the Prophet Mohammed standing in feces, should the print shop be required or forced to print my bumper stickers or T-shirts ?

Would the progs demand the shop owner be compliant ?  {{{crickets}}}

My liberty driven answer would be “yes”, the shop operator should be allowed to refuse the request based on his/her central tenet of faith.    But, well beyond that easy example my own perspective on freedom and liberty extends to:  Any individual should be free to engage in commerce – or not, contact – or not, relationship – or not, employment – or not, service – or not, for any reason they desire without needing justification.

I respect all people and views, it doesn’t mean I have to agree with them or desire the company of those who afford them.   Respect also means – leave me the hell alone, and don’t force me into relationships that are not determined by my own individual values.

(Via Moonbattery) The Arizona State Senate has once again placed itself in the liberal establishment’s crosshairs, this time by affirming our right not to be compelled to do business with overt homosexuals in situations that violate religious principles.

Media liberals, being extremely overrepresented in the current media, preposterously but predictably screeched like scalded cats that the rights of homosexuals are violated if private citizens are not compelled by the government to enter into relations with them that violate their consciences. Their attempt to equate this with civil rights struggles of the past is an insult that should enrage blacks.

Senate Bill 1062 was explicitly inspired by an outrageous case from neighboring New Mexico, where a Christian photographer was sued for refusing to photograph a ceremony that according to her Christian beliefs was a blasphemous travesty. (more…)
