Unfortunately, as noted in the initial predictions for 2027 legislative expectations it appears the ability of President Trump to execute an America-First economic policy is going to be targeted. Incoming Democrat committee leaders are intending to write laws reversing President Trump’s tariff ability, starting with Canada.
The Wall Street Journal, a media outlet who have long been against U.S. protective tariffs, are outlining the Democrat plan. Considering the likelihood of a Presidential veto the democrat plan includes attaching legislation to the tariff authority repeal that will stimulate Republican support.
Congress can override a presidential veto with a two-thirds majority, or 290 votes in the House and 67 votes in the Senate given all members are voting. As of Thursday evening, Democrats had captured 253 House seats and 54 Senate seats.
This is where we evaluate internal leftist politics. Some democrats support tariffs, particularly in states where industrial manufacturing, auto plants, steel and aluminum are critical sectors to their economy. However, caution here is advised as you may remember the ‘blue dog’ democrat coalition that was against Obamacare were eventually crushed by the weight of the socialist movement within the Democrat party.
(Via WSJ) – Democrats are eyeing President Trump’s trade war with Canada as the first target in a campaign to roll back his administration’s tariff agenda, according to the party’s senior trade lawmaker in the Senate.
“There is overwhelming support for repealing the tariffs on products from Canada,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D., Ore.), the Ranking Member on the Senate Finance Committee, who added that he was “already talking” with colleagues about legislation to push against Trump’s second-term levies after he gains control of the committee in January.
Wyden’s statement follows an election season when many victorious Democratic candidates called for an end to Trump’s trade conflict with Canada, which threatens to intensify in the coming months before the new lawmakers are sworn in. In border states such as Michigan, Maine and Alaska, the tariffs were central campaign issues, and even Republican candidates pivoted to oppose the levies in the face of voter opposition.
Even after Democrats retake control of Congress, any measure would likely need 60 Senate votes to override a filibuster, and it isn’t clear Democrats could get the additional support needed to override a presidential veto.
[…] Wyden and those close to him say the Canada tariffs are the best opportunity to flip Republicans against Trump and potentially build enough support to avert a veto—or potentially overrule it.
The Canada legislation would be just the first in a series of actions Democrats are planning to put pressure on Trump’s trade agenda.
Those on Capitol Hill say further actions could include legislation to push back on some of the novel legal authorities Trump has used to justify his tariffs, such as Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which underpins his Canada levies, but had never before been used by a president. Another target could be Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which Trump invoked for the first time to impose temporary tariffs earlier this year.
[…] Though Trump could raise the threat of a veto on any of the potential actions, Democrats think they can encourage Republican defections by forcing votes on unpopular trade items and ultimately build momentum toward larger changes in the run-up to the 2028 election and beyond. “Ultimately,” Wyden said, “Congress must take away the president’s ability to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose tariffs.”
Whether the Democrats’ efforts will force Trump to change any of his tariffs or other trade policies remains uncertain. The power to impose tariffs still rests largely with the president, and those close to Trump say there is little indication that an electoral rebuke will slow his trade agenda down. (read more)
The Canadian government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney is counting on the Democrats to change the tariff regime and preserve the status quo. Carney and all of the provincial leadership will actively be working with democrats. This is going to be an issue to watch closely.
Additionally, nations who seek tariff relief, specifically India, China and the EU, will begin pouring money into the K-Street lobbyist sector to get tariff relief for their specific interests added to any larger legislative effort against tariffs.
If the leftist leadership in congress are successful in taking away or severely hampering executive branch power to deploy tariffs, the U.S. economy will shift quickly. Current investment strategies in U.S. manufacturing can reverse quickly.
What Obamacare legislation was to healthcare sector, tariff legislation is to the American manufacturing sector.

and in the background lingers the fall of france and the rest of western E.U.
Notice in these “unrest” scenarios that no politicians are impacted (unless it’s blue on blue-usual target being someone who is upsetting the status quo). Everyone left and center left seems to float above the fray-uniparty rules. Some segment of the citizenry is terrorized, silenced and maybe hurt and globalism marches on.
If my arithmetic is correct, the Dim-0-Crats are 13 votes shy in the Senate and 37 votes short in the House.
I’m not sure, but those numbers seem like a pretty large hurdle to jump.
I say this because it means only 1 Senator out of 13 has to say nope.
It means only 1 member of the House has a say: nope.
It may be difficult but is manageable depending upon the issue.
Because your math is missing a key context …
that is 13 out of 44 Senators,
and 37 out of 144 House Members.
The RINO wing of Uni-Party in Congress had no problems rotating on their thumbs for 2-years to halt President Trump … especially on any issue related to Power and Control as in the original form of the Save Act, Legislation supporting DOGE, Legislation supporting executive Orders and Executive Branch Appointments.
The next step for the appropriate number of RINO’s would not be difficult given the motivation of the right issue.
For 2-years the names of republicans opposing President Trump, in the House and Senate, shifted like the sands in a dune in the desert, with names even including those thought to be supporters.
The democrats can even threaten re-election based on their ability to create the Biggest WAVE of Flips in History.

Good morning, Betsy,
While my maths has sometimes not mathed quite right, that right there is funny, and sadly relevant.
How ya’ been?
“This is where we evaluate internal leftist politics.”
To your point doc, the idea of over-riding presidential veto, I would not be surprised should enough R’s crossover to make it happen in both Chambers.
Well put. That sounds about right.
But , in so far as representation in Congress when it really matters, America First has no friends.
If it did, Thune would be thrown out on his ass.
What a despicable person.
China leads the world in the manufacture and export of tunnel boring machines (TBM), which are crucial in very large civil engineering projects.
TBM’s are also widely used by mining companies worldwide. They can reach depths far deeper, and can dig tunnels far faster, than traditional techniques.
China’s Commerce Ministry has new export restrictions on TBM’s, and on the firms selling the gear, and replacement parts.
The new regulations allow for China’s key trading partners to access the equipment, which will further deepen their monopolies on critical minerals mining.
Thank you Nixon for ”opening” China up to the world, thinking it would be a counter to Russia
deleted comment and moved to a more appropriate discussion above.
Idaho stayed red but, we still use paper ballots. Machines seem to be the issue. How can you ever hope to verify the outcome when a machine tabulates and controls results? Maybe that is where the 20 million new votes were born. Before the first vote was cast?
It’s rich that Wyden is the ranking member of the finance committee…I live in Oregon…he does not.
His wife, who he lives with in NY, just got popped for taking PPP loans under false pretenses. She/they are wealthy.
But wait she will pay it back…
We have a nickname for Wyden, “Skeletor”.
He has used Oregon for his whole career… now and his ilk will “use” America until we are used up.
“Odds of this election outcome 1 in trillions”
