Toward Latin America there are multiple options, but it’s likely a significant U.S. military footprint is destined for Greenland. If you read President Trump’s earlier announcement you might note:
…”We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction.”
This announcement comes directly after President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a review of NATO forces in Europe with the expressed intention of drawing down the U.S. footprint. The Pentagon announced a six-month review of US forces in Europe in June, directing US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, the head of US European Command, to assess future force requirements.
According to media, “The proposed reduction could involve around 25,000 troops, which is roughly one-third of the approximately 80,000 US service members currently stationed in Europe. Some officials involved in the discussions have indicated that the figure could be considerably higher, potentially reaching 40,000, or about half of the American military presence on the continent, according to NBC News.”
Germany is the largest American military hub on the continent, with around 36,000 US troops. Italy hosts about 12,000 US troops and several major air bases. Spain, meanwhile, provides important air and naval facilities in the country’s south. These would be the bases most likely to see significant withdrawal. All three nations are a hot mess of political manipulation, economic turmoil, internal friction and opposition to the U.S. national security framework.

Their “free” health care, which in some cases, doctors needed to be bribed to provide. I was stationed in European countries for 15 years. I knew many “locals” well.

My father flew one of first three US jet fighters (F-80 “Shooting Star”) from Otis Air Force Base (MA) to Thule to defend the base while it was under construction in 1952. It was a year’s deployment. The engineers laid a gravel runway to receive the fighters well before the well-known white-colored paved runway, which came later. Another Greenland air base facility, which now is a civilian airstrip, was Søndre Strømfjord (also on the west coast of Greenland). I believe there are still a handful of US personnel stationed there. Søndre Strømfjord (now known as Kangerlussuaq) certainly is a location open for redevelopment.
Wait until the geodesic domes are in place. Living will be transformed. It will be a glimpse of the future in remote formerly uninhabitable places.
Could be a hint of lunar settlement.

Incentive pay? Myself, I would be fine with such an assignment, long or short, no incentive needed (USN, 1974-1980).
I’m certain a plan to ameliorate the living conditions using geodesic domes will be forthcoming. A twofold accomplishment would be a model for space exploration and colonization.

Had a brief helicopter visit from Thule, on the ice, off of Greenland (don’t know why) (North Pole expedition, SSN-678, c. Mar. 1979; a number of critical things broke on that run, but we had 2 chiefs expert on lathe use).
Thule Air Base is now Pituffik Space Base.
I laughed out loud when I looked at how the U.S. now has Canada surrounded on that map. That couldn’t have been part of the plan all along now, could it?
