Hoover did OK the Smoot Hawley Tariff to prevent servile labor made products from the British Empire, Japan, India, and China from flooding American markets.

He at least got that right.

Hoover wasn’t the best of presidents, but when it came to helping the destitute, often at great personal risk to himself, Hoover was a rockstar.

He helped feed the Belgians during WWI (and the greedly lout Churchill, who wouldn’t even allow the rescue of the drowning from the Lusitania, which he authorized to carry munitions, hated him and tried to have him killed). He arranged the feeding of millions during the Russian Civil War. His efforts saved roughly 10 million lives.

Hoover also sidelined his punk namesake J. Edgar and got the Treasury Dept (Eliot Ness, taxman Frank Wilson, and Mysterious Mike Malone) to take down Capone. Herb considered the FBI corrupt and incompetent.

I respectfully disagree with you on Alfred the Great. Here’s why:

Europe slowly became Christian, starting in the Roman provinces, then working into Ireland and Scotland, the Low Countries, Germany, Eastern Europe, Russia, then Scandinavia. There were two doctrinal centers — one in Rome, and one in Constantinople (which grew in importance due to the diligence of Emperor Justinian, the great man who built Hagia Sofia and more importantly left the Justinian Code, a system of laws for his people designed to elevate justice and order over what it had been. ) Churchmen in both cities conferred and overall there was agreemment on doctrine.

There were various dissenting views, heresies if you will. Arianism was a big movement among many in Europe for awhile. Arians believed Christ was created by God the Father so was not really equally divine. I’m not going to go too far into this but will say there were differing views besides Arianism. The Albigensians and Bogomils were others …. the Bogomils were proto-Protestant rebels against the Orthodox Christians. They practiced buggery, and under Turk pressure, became Moslams. Their descendants are the Moslems of Bosnia. The Abigensians had similar views on sexuality, and the French king finally broke them.

Rulers like Constantine and Justinian and Charlemagne, if not exactly holy themselves, at least recognized the need for doctrinal unity. So they drove the churchmen to define a unitary doctrine.

The popes of Rome, the metrpolitans of Constantinople, and the various bishops and theologians likewise strove for doctrinal unity and purity. It is not easy to achieve when people have their own opinions.

Eventually the two halves of Christianity went their separate ways in the middle of the 1000s AD. This was a tragedy of colossal proportions for the people of Europe, and it weakened the continent against the Moh ammedans.

The Black Death greatly weakened the Church in Western Europe, as the clergy who died were the ones who were most likely to be tending to the poor. Unworthy men came to dominate the ranks of the Church, leading to the division of the Church and some antipopes moving to Avignon to curry favor with the French king. This schismatic division was in effect during the Hundred Year War, which emboldened the English in their depredations. They and their French lackeys did not recognize the legitimate Pope in Rome. Joan of Arc did, and appealed her unjust conviction to him, but the English and French lackeys would not send it to him. They murdered her on 5/30/1431, the day that used to be our Memorial Day, which was appropriate because she was a veteran who lost her life for her people too.

(Calvin refused to visit the quarantine hospital in Geneva, because he was afraid he would get sick. This almost cost him his power, because the people compared his cowardice unfavorably with the priests and nuns who routinely risked their lives to minister to the sick and dying there. Later, Father Damien De Veuster founded the leper colony on Molokai in Hawaii. A self-satisfied Evangelical minister falsely and smugly claimed Father Damien got leprosy from screwing the lady lepers. Robert Louis Stevenson, an admirer of Father Damien, blasted that minister in terms so scathing it reduced his reputation to rubble. Babe Ruth visited the lepers on Molokai because he felt sorry for them. Babe grew up and learned how to play ball in a Catholic orphanage in Baltimore … the same one that took in Jewish orphan Al Jolson .. and he heard about the leper colony at the orphanage. And Tom Selleck as Magnum, and Rick, flown by TC would go to Molokai from time to time with aid and presents as part of the TV show’s story lines. Ironically, the creator of Magnum PI was Donald Bellisario, who bears the name of Justinian’s greatest general.)

Then Constantiople fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Orthodox leaders either were captives or had to relocate to Russia, which took the place of the Byzantine emperors as the protectors of Orthodoxy.

In the 1500s came the Protestant breakaways.

My uncle, a hard-core conservative orthodox Jesuit and long-time Vatican scholar, worked for decades with his opposites in the Orthodox faiths to translate ancient and medieval religious writings, to root out the fraudulent and to learn from the minds of the legitimate church leaders and thinkers of the era who were closer in time to the Apostles and early leaders of the Church. He also shared info with a friend of mine who is a Baptist minister. They don’t see eye to eye on doctrine, but they all wanted to do the will of God.

Likewise, Werner Keller, the German fighter against Hitler, wrote “The Bible as History.” Pius XII authorized the Church to give Keller, a Lutheran, access to Church records to aid in his research. “The Bible as History” is a masterful work that all Christians should read. My uncle thought highly of Keller’s work.

We should all seek the truth. Thankfully the Treehouse is a watering hole for truth seekers.

I did not applaud you for your superb potted history of England/The British Isles. I concur on every point excepting the one I mentioned. The Orthodox faith holds the Nicene creed to be true. The East/West split came about in 1054 from the adoption of the ‘Filioque’ by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014. Before this, excepting Heresies that you mention, the Christian world was doctrinally completely agreed, though there were various different practices. The Catholics introduced a novel doctrine into Christianity. Therefore, before 1054, all non heretical Christians were Orthodox; Orthodox Christianity retains the original doctrine past to the Apostles by Christ.

The split between Roman Catholicism (Otherwise known in some schools of thought as as Western Orthodox) and the rest of the Orthodox world (Eastern or otherwise) did not occur until ~1064 AD (give or take a few years, depending on sources cited).

Alfred the Great ruled in the latter half of the 9th century, and died ~165 years before that split.

Before the split, Christianity followed one template (in the significant majority) for over 5 centuries. Until then, there was only ONE form of Orthodoxy – that which was established by a Roman Emperor coordinating with a Roman bishop to establish a standardized, uniform structure to Christianity.

Slight correction the Orthodox Church was founded in 1054 in the Greek Byzantine Empire now Turkey. The Russians quickly converted to that version of Christianity. Because they were impressed by Santa Sophia built as a Roman Catholic Church by Roman Catholic emperor Justinian 500s AD. Plus Christianity allows alcohol and Islam forbids it ( officially)
No such thing as orthodox Christianity in 899 AD England almost 200 years before the Roman Catholic Orthodox split thousands of miles away. Protestants still fighting the European wars of religion 400 years ago. Or maybe Masons.

(The English threw Catherine away after Henry v’s death. She fornicated with a bounder named Owen Tudor, and was the ancestress of Henry VIII. Tudor got in trouble one time too many and was beheaded.)

Joan was sold out by the mayor of Compeigne and she and her bodyguard were locked out of the town while fighting a rear guard action to save the lives of the town’s soldiers who broke. General Sherman hated the English. He threatened the British consul in Savannah with sending his men to the Bahamas and throwing the town of Nassau into the ocean.

Sherman’s wife Ellen Ewing was Catholic. His children were raised as Catholics. Sherman was brought up as a Catholic when the Ewing family adopted him and his brother Tom, but he wasn’t much of an adherent of any faith.

Notre Dame’s priests gave Sherman 25 scholarships to give to young men he thought would benefit from a Catholic education. (The family lived at Notre Dame during a good part of the war.)
