Poland is sending two escort ships, Denmark says they are willing, France changes from no to maybe, and NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte says everyone is trying to figure out how to help. Huh, funny that.

The Iranians threw a couple of missiles into Turkey, a NATO member. It was a little late and sort of a half assed effort (I have my thoughts on the role of Turkey in this whole thing which I have posted previously).
Nonetheless, wouldn’t this trigger Rule 5? And by not responding, the rest of NATO violated its obligations, rendering the agreement null and void?
Article 5 seems kinda wishy-washy on that and military retaliation is not necessarily required in case of an attack.

Part of me wonders if we are better off that they send their escort ships or if we’re better off just doin the job ourselves. Nato has been (like the UN) useless – and just sucking up US taxpayer dollars.

The major Navies of NATO have extensive Mine Warfare assets (especially Germany, France and Italy) … as well as … quite a few Corvette and Fast Attack Class ships that are suited for operating in the Persian Gulf on escort duty. Let’s see how those maybe’s evolve … quite embarrassing for the EU that the smallest (Polish) Navy has stepped up to the plate.
That frees up the US to continue destruction and suppression missions vs the Iranians and Houthis if they stick their nose into the fray. The operations vs the Houthis in the past did not have near the number assets committed as now available … Plus the Saudis would love to pile on vs Houthis.
