I had no idea the number of people receiving supplemental food assistance was over 40 million.
With the federal government shutdown continuing, several media reports now say federal food assistance payments will likely lapse on November 1st.
WASHINGTON – More than 40 million low-income food stamp beneficiaries are expected to receive less help with grocery bills — or no help at all — in the coming days.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is threatening to withhold billions of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) contingency funding, which Congress has already allocated for emergency scenarios, if the government shutdown stretches into November.
There is between $5 billion and $6 billion currently in that fund, experts say. That’s not enough to cover the estimated $8 billion in SNAP benefits due out next month, but it would allow for partial payments to help low-income Americans defray food costs.
On Friday, however, USDA released guidance saying it won’t use those funds to cover SNAP benefits if the government shutdown extends beyond Oct. 31 — a move that appears designed to maximize the pressure on Senate Democrats to support a GOP spending bill to reopen the government.
In a memo, first reported by Axios, the USDA said the reason is simple: The contingency fund was designed to respond to unforeseen events, like natural disasters, and the current shutdown doesn’t qualify because it was manufactured by Democrats. To spend the money on SNAP benefits during such an event, the USDA argues, would be illegal. (read more)

The only opportunity the Federal government guarantees to provide CITIZENS food, housing, healthcare, education is by pledging to sacrifice their lives on behalf of their Federal governments’ Dept. of War.
Non- citizens PLEDGE NOTHING, SACRIFICE NOTHING and DESERVE NOTHING!
MAGA 24/7
Look at the increases and put the move towards illegal immigration over that. 25 million are not US citizens.
So a 1 year emergency food supply (2000 calories/day) at the end of 2024 is $2,815 or $234/month. Max SNAP benefit for a family of 4 is $995/month or $248/person. This also doesn’t count trips to the food bank.

Is it really 42 million or is it half that with the other half being stolen by states falsely increasing the number of people who receive it?
Notice how it is all the Fed money (section 8, Food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare subsidies, etc.
States can’t print money but they can create ghost illegals immigrants out of thin air (no birth certificate to prove they exist required ).
The states have been laundering our tax dollars on the programs and the spigot is about to get shut off.
Thus the need for national guard. Hungry homeless people are desperate people.
42M is 15% of the US population age 18 and up. It is a big number, but the US is a big country of 247M 18+ adults and 347,000,000 total population. When I was a kid, 600M Chinese was thought of as an enormously populated country, for example. The US is a big country. Perspective matters.
On the Bell Curve of IQ distribution, an IQ of 85 or less equates to…15% of the population. That’s not to say people with an 85 IQ or less cannot work. But their ability to support themselves meaningfully is degraded. Hence the S in SNAP – Supplemental.

idk, I think we come off has cold and heartless when we go after people like that. Sure, there’s bound to be some illegals in there. And there’s bound to be some fraud. But you do not have to spend a long time around large groups of people to realize there is a group of humans who just aren’t going to be able to get by without some help. We end up sounding like the anti-human depopulationist types who would rather just exterminate that bottom 15-25% through “birth control”.
It does make a good argument to limit immigration, though, where importing more sub 100 IQ people doesn’t make sense for the health of the country.
A lot of these welfare programs have evolved into “riot insurance”. Which is why I think the shutdown probably ends before 11/1. There’s a point at which Democrats will have to face the reality of their situation. Reality is not their strong suit, but I think the gov’t union calling for an end to the shutdown is probably the last straw.
I agree that the services are needed and that we have them is what makes our country so great. I don’t have a problem with the services, I have a problem with the massive amount of theft and fraud by our government. We aren’t talking “some fraud” we are talking about billions of tax dollars. Stacy Abrams got 2 billion for a business that was a complete sham. That’s just one example. We could feed and house quite a few with that.
It seems clear to me that the states want these illegals to create big pots of money they can steal tax dollars from. They give them a drivers license but who is to say that millions of them don’t even exist. It would be so easy to generated illegals on paper (no birth certificates to prove they were ever born) and allocate billions of their payments back to the same corrupt forces that generate ballots to keep themselves in power.
If we don’t get a handle on this massive corruption, we will all soon be hungry.
In short, I think the reason the Dems refuse to sign a clean CR and are willing to take the red hot heat is because THEY need the money.
They lost the USAID, and Doge and now Trump is cutting of the Federal billions they steal through laundering our tax dollars through these programs.
I’m with you. The left fought against DOGE rooting waste, fraud and abuse so there must be something to it. I’m all for helping needy citizens. Not interested in supporting freeloaders, able-bodied or lazy people.
I’ve read that it pays to be TWO gas tanks away from problem high density poverty-ridden problem areas when they descend into anarchy.
But don’t forget that U.S. politicians enabled this when they allowed mass offshoring to foreign nations, mass outsourcing of work to foreign firms, and mass in-sourcing of foreign labor to the point BLS admitted in May 2025 that 19.2% of the entire U.S. civilian workforce were foreign-born as of 2024 (even though the LISEP metric of U.S. functional unemployment climbed to 24.7%).
The thing about non-entitlement subsidies is they aren’t needed much when the entire domestic workforce is at near full-employment with sustainable real wages and benefits that keep up with or exceed the inflation rate. Instead, U.S. tax revenues as people pay their taxes. But U.S. politicians were rewarded by monied interests to ensure that never occurs: and it hasn’t.
And then there’s the present deployment of AI and rapid automation to reduce the need for U.S. workers…
From my tree branch, I worked in mental health and schools with children. I frequently worked with social workers who provided help in getting food stamps. The workers were scared to say no to anyone for fear it would become an accusation of discrimination and they knew the bureaucracy would not have their back.
They sure aren’t a’feared to say no to recently productive taxpayers who fall on the hardest of times, Ma’am, I can assure you..
SNAP should buy flour, sugar, salt, yeast, eggs, milk, government cheese and a number 10 can of peanut butter. Now you won’t starve. If you want to eat better, get a job.
SNAP benefits BALLOONED under Obama. He wanted as many people on it as possible, as though the people actually starving didn’t know the program existed!
If the Food Stamps don’t get funded the recipients would need to re-apply once funding did become available. That would clean up some of the fraud with food stamps.
This is what happens when people no longer over see any and all programs
Now ya know why Doritos are six bucks a bag and soda pop is through the roof…
There will be a risk if the SNAP benefits arent funded. If you intend to do your own shopping at grocery store, look for someone coming along and stealing the food you bought, and you will have no recourse because it will be all across this nation. The threat is real and Congress is being negligent in this matter.
The only recourse to this occuring, have your groceries delivered. But then how many deliveries will actually be finalized?
The mayorial candidate for NYC has a plan…
Free groceries run by city grocery stores. Will this work if SNAP benefits are not given to residents in NYC, I hear there are over 7 million people living there. That amount in savings will support the ones that really need the assistance for food.
BTW…as a child, we were very fortunate to receive government commodities to supplement products that we couldn’t produce in mass amounts on the farm to feed 100 children+caretakers…and we all had our chores as younguns. So yes we at a very young age learned that it takes everyone to bring home the groceries. 😛
So Obama took SNAP from 31 million to 44 million in 2 years??
