I had no idea the number of people receiving supplemental food assistance was over 40 million.
With the federal government shutdown continuing, several media reports now say federal food assistance payments will likely lapse on November 1st.
WASHINGTON – More than 40 million low-income food stamp beneficiaries are expected to receive less help with grocery bills — or no help at all — in the coming days.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is threatening to withhold billions of dollars in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) contingency funding, which Congress has already allocated for emergency scenarios, if the government shutdown stretches into November.
There is between $5 billion and $6 billion currently in that fund, experts say. That’s not enough to cover the estimated $8 billion in SNAP benefits due out next month, but it would allow for partial payments to help low-income Americans defray food costs.
On Friday, however, USDA released guidance saying it won’t use those funds to cover SNAP benefits if the government shutdown extends beyond Oct. 31 — a move that appears designed to maximize the pressure on Senate Democrats to support a GOP spending bill to reopen the government.
In a memo, first reported by Axios, the USDA said the reason is simple: The contingency fund was designed to respond to unforeseen events, like natural disasters, and the current shutdown doesn’t qualify because it was manufactured by Democrats. To spend the money on SNAP benefits during such an event, the USDA argues, would be illegal. (read more)

Many children go hungry even when parents / parent receive food stamps and other aid. The parents / parent never go hungry but the children are neglected and malnourished. Unfortunately it’s widespread.

Actually, the food stamp programs are a separate entity from the farm price support programs, although they are both administered through the US Department of agriculture. The vast majority of the USDA’s budget goes to the food stamp programs compared to farmers subsidies.

The statistic is 40+ million people get benefits from the SNAP program. That does not necessarily mean all those 40M+ rely on SNAP for food. It just means they get refills on their EBT cards.

It’s not the role of the church to be a social program for unbelievers. Churches equip the saints so the saints can share the gospel. When our mission becomes providing for the unbelievers we then start to change our churches to appeal to unbelievers and not to equip the saints we’ve lost our God given mission. The church isn’t a charity.
Of course non-believers will join the church just to take advantage of the freebies. A true Christian church will accept them in good faith and will not question their motives. Any abuse of this Christian charity will be on those who exploit it.

Churches are in a better position to serve their local communities because they can see what the needs really are instead of handing out EBT cards indiscriminately. I would remove all government subsidies and pass the charity work to community organizations if it were my choice.
Charity shows the heart of God and it is always possible that this will be seen by others and influence them to ask for the hope that is in us. If charity is also ministered with wisdom it can actually serve needs. If it is just passed out without any consideration of what is really needed by the individual it may be more harmful than helpful. Sometime people need to suffer to grow into the image God intended for us.

All my Senior friends live in the Low Income Senior Housing as well as a few Disabled Folks. They all get Food Stamps. If my Hsbnd hadnt been in AF for 20 yrs w Ret which isnt that much, but we would be on Food Stamps and probly in the Low Income as we would qualify. Praise God we are Debt Free so we are ok. Any one of us are a step away from being Homeless it could happen here one day as our Ins and Taxes are getting so high one day we could lose our home. What I wonder is how many of the mocking comments are made by those who call themselves Christian? This reminds me of an incident that I posted about here years ago, back when people were out protesting the COVID vax, mask, and social distancing mandates. I was one of the protestors. People showed up waving American flags and holding signs about freedom. Someone tacked up a sign on a tree saying “Love over Fear.” Another sign said “Free hugs.” Someone else was handing out free bottled water. A pastor was there handing out invitations to his church.
And then along came a homeless woman who was obviously in dire need and obviously not faking it. She was slowly pushing a shopping cart containing only a small, neatly piled stack of paper towels, and minding her own business, not asking anything from anyone. Nobody offered her a free hug, a bottle of water, or even an invitation to church! Everyone including the pastor pretended they couldn’t see her. I stared frozen as she passed, and the thought hit me that it was horrible to have a sign saying “Love over Fear” and then show no love to this poor woman. I gave her my water bottle that someone had given to me, and a small donation. I still regret not giving her more.

A few approved items lfrom categories likeMeat, eggs, dairy, peanut butter, bread, some produce, flour, oil, and even some sugar. That’s it. Heck, I’d even be ok throwing some personal care and household items on there, like tampons and dish soap. But the Doritos and juice boxes have to go.

We’ll be doing a big grocery run this week….and keep a low profile for the first part of November. I don’t expect much difficulty here in our rural part of the state, but will certainly avoid large cities more than I usually do.

Generally, I think the Dems are to blame for the shutdown, but if the USDA goes through with this cutoff, they will have ensured Mamdani wins…and folks will remember it a year from now for the mid-terms. It’s another way for the Repubs to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Right. Bureaucracies exist to sustain the bureaucracy – the bureaucracy doesn’t care about cheating or scams, in fact it encourages them, because it allows for larger and larger budgets for the programs, bonuses for the bureaucrats, and larger staffs.
The fact that they release some of the funds to recipients is secondary to the primary objective, which is enlarging the “bureau.”
I do not understand why this is so. With about a $1T deficit on a $4T budget, 75-80% of funds is coming in and it all doesn’t arrive on April 16th each year. Alot of it is quarterly. And that 75-80% constant income can be applied strategically. This is all just a game being played.
It’s not the money coming in. It’s the money going out. No money can be spent from the Treasury without an appropriations law passed by Congress and signed by the President (US Constitution, Article I, Section 9, Clause 7.)
Congress has not passed appropriations for Fiscal 2025. The House passed a fix but Democrats in the Senate are holding things up unless the GOP reverses the Big Beautiful Bill.
The President has some ability to “re-program” money, moving it from one program to another or to reallocate unspent funds. Some programs are self-funded – like the Post Office and Social Security. But for most programs the money is stopped.

It doesn’t take a genius to know that the VAST majority of food stamp recipients are Democrat voters…and they’re going to put pressure on the Democrat elites, (who pretend to care about them but don’t give a rat’s ass), to end the government shutdown!
But they won’t do that for the foreseeable future because the shutdown doesn’t hit the inside the beltway crowd in their pockets!
So my plan is to start paying our troops again and stop paying the salaries of our Senators and Congressmen…and then, as far as I’m concerned, the government shutdown can last forever!
Democrats have their own version of the “give a man a fish” parable:
Get a person a private sector job and they will vote Democrat once (until they see how much they lose to taxes)
But get a person signed up for welfare and you have created a Democrat voter for life
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day

But also, the foodstamp program is just laundering money to big corporations like walmart and other grocers and convenience stores.
Can someone explain how it is money laundering? I see it as more of an govt-paid incentive to people, which benefits the food industry by driving more food sales. Does that = Money Laundering? Or, am I missing something more nefarious than simply food purchases?
That is too many US citizens (or illegals??) on food supplement money. In church today there was a call for funds for a local town food service center- does meals for poor/whatever people. The place serves a lot of free meals each day plus people can take away food no questions asked. This is in my middle class town in central Delaware. I don’t know what to think.

I’d have to lie my tail off to a prospective employer at a regular 9 to 5, and tell them “no” there isn’t anything horribly wrong with the soft tissue in my spine, and “no” there is nothing that could keep me from performing my job description.. if I tell them the Truth, I am immediately disqualified as NO ONE wants that kind of liability even standing on their property let alone working wherever that is.
It’s a mess out there, to be sure.

I worked in a grocery store. Wedding cakes were being purchased as well as over the top Birthday cakes. How aggravating for me to see the balance on a customers receipt. Thousands of dollars and they rollover every month. People driving Mercedes and carrying Gucci bags, used these food stamps. what ever happened to just the simple basics like eggs cheese and milk? As half my paycheck was paying for this.

Story time. I’ll share what really opened my eyes to how many people are on EBT.
Mid-2010s. Quiet, lower middle class, mostly White neighborhood. I go out grocery shopping on a normal Saturday. I hit up the local Mexican market first and go to checkout. The cashier looks extremely nervous and tells me in broken English “cash only.” Uh, okay, I pay in cash. Next up is Aldi. It’s chaos. There are signs on the doors saying the entire EBT system is down. The store employees are in a panic running around and not knowing what to do.
Just how many people in this seemingly economically stable neighborhood are on EBT that one outage sent two grocery stores into a meltdown? And if this many people in the “nice” neighborhood are on EBT, then what are the numbers like in the poorer areas?
8 BILLION per MONTH!!! Think about that. 96 BILLION per YEAR!

There is a little pizzeria that I enjoy going to, the ‘friendliest little bar’ in a small Merrimack Valley town in Essex County near where I live.
One of the servers is 8 months pregnant. Several months ago, she told me how her father worked for years at a local well known fish distributor. After several years of loyal service, he was replaced by an illegal alien.
The other day, we were discussing the news of the day, including the pending cuts of SNAP benefits.
The collective outrage of among members of the Treehouse for those who abuse the system by “keeping their legs open” is entirely understandable.
However, there are good people who will be impacted by this: her father, who was put out of work by an employer who ditched his loyal employment for an illegal, is now disabled and relies up SNAP to eat.
He is not the kind of person who is abusing the system.
I am all for cutting off the ingrates, abusers and parasites.
How about those among us, who have contributed to society, paid taxes, and fallen on hard times?
I’ve became disabled 2 1/2 years ago, got on SSDI begrudgingly(I’m 57 and want to work but cannot due to chronic pain, then kidney cancer and the removal of one kidney), I am 100% qualified for snap and EBT but have not even bothered to apply as I am too proud and have the meager resources to make things work. It’s hard. It’s stressful all the time, but now the Trump doctrine is fixing shit, eggs are down, gas is down…..I’m finally treading water again.
I feel for those who didn’t contribute to their own retirement as I am supplementing my family with dipping into my 401k small amounts at

The market is rebounding and it affects my accounts less now to take small distributions, so I’m OK.
This feels a lot like, “ LOOK, SQUIRREL” to me, even though I’m greatly affected, I’m doing everything I can to rely on my backstop of feeling guilty about MY hard times.

I think you should apply for and use the benefits. Even if you are proud, using the benefits reduce the amount that you have to withdraw from your ‘estate’ that will be passed down to your family. So, it will benefit your family in the long-run.

I’ve seen people in the grocery line with kids finding out the little thing they wanted was not allowed. I’ve also seen someone buy a dozen gallons of milk to trade for cash.
We should not condemn everyone on food stamps. But I believe percentage wise, this is the most fraudulent government program ever created.
Also I like the “illegal” argument. It means even if the administration wanted to do it, they couldn’t do it legally.
Do you think this program is worse than the college loan program? It just doesn’t touch as many people.
