I was unaware until this interview the July 1st digital services tax that Canada is going to apply to U.S. tech companies is retroactive in application. Over a billion dollars will be due on Monday as a result of Canada’s targeting. Duplicitous Snow Mexicans.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent outlines the details of what Canada did and why President Trump is responding so forcefully. Bessent also explains that the EU doesn’t have a digital services tax, but some European countries do. President Trump is factoring in those targeted tariffs against our tech industry as he seeks to execute new trade agreements with the EU. WATCH:

LILLEY: Carney puts Canadian jobs at risk over foolish tax idea
Excerpt:
“Canada put a charge on some of our companies and Canada has been a very difficult country to deal with over the years,” Trump said.
“Economically we have such power over Canada. I’d rather not use it,” Trump said. “It’s not going to work out well for Canada. They were foolish to do it.”
Foolish is correct because this means tariffs stay in place, jobs are put at risk and Canada suffers.
It’s not just voices in Washington saying that, it’s coming from business groups and provincial premiers as well. Various industry groups have been warning the government that this was the wrong path to take and the Business Council of Canada had come out strongly against the tax.

Brian Lilley
@brianlilley
This was Doug Ford last October.
Whether Trump won or Harris won, we were going to be facing a fight on this and Ford said it back then, this tax will put Canadian jobs at risk…..
—
Doug Ford
@fordnation
We need the federal government to pause the implementation of their Digital Services Tax.
For our American partners, this is nothing but an unfair tax that’s putting millions of Canadian jobs at risk.
Video linked…
The problem with Doug Ford is that all of his policies are driven by polling. Thus far his railing against the US and his bravado to make the US suffer has been exceptionally popular.
But when people begin defaulting on their mortgages and watching their life long ambitions vaporize, the elbows up mantra becomes nauseous. Ontario’s economy is almost 100% driven by our proximity to the US market. I loathe Doug Ford. I’d love nothing better than to see Ontario reduced to third world status.
I ran against Doug Ford’s MPP for my riding. You can’t imagine a more smug and self absorbed individual. During the all candidates debate my pastor took me aside and we all bowed our heads and prayed. PC candidate came running over to me and wanted to pray with me. I don’t put politics ahead of God’s kingdom so I obliged. You never know what God wants in our lives.
Yah. The PCs are completely unmoored from any principles. The typical Ontario voter who just couldn’t help themselves when there were truly fantastic options available deserve every ounce of what is coming.

There are other taxes/tariffs that are way worse than this one. Amazon and fellow top money making companies, can afford to pay, not retroactively but these top tier companies charge more to consumers than they could ever spend. During Covid, they raked in massive unheard profits at the expense of small businesses. Farmers get hit with 400% tariff, attempting to sell their products in Canada. Maybe Im not seeing the whole picture here, except that Carney wants to make Canadians suffer, He is a liberal whack job and Ford seems disingenuous , same as the RINO scum in the US.
Canadian leaders, both political and economic, support the European ‘monarchy’ type of government; governments answering to monarchies are never really ‘for’ the people. True capitalist and real Constitutional nations have a different focus. You are right the Uniparty in the US is to blame.
Most nations of the world are either a monarchy or socialist/communist; the USA was going down the same path until We were shaken to our senses with the advent of the NWO/communism entering our midst politically and economically.
God Help US
Crooked elections, social issues becoming civic issues, a crooked judicial system, overwhelming economic monopolies as well as a media monopoly, along with government bureaucracies have taken their toll and brought US to the brink. They thought Covid would be the icing on the cake and celebrating would ensue……
We have to break up the monopolies’ grip from our land from sea to sea.
Don’t know if taxation is the answer……. We always seem to be left with the bill!!
1.) It gives the benevolent experts of the Canadian ruling class more money and power
2.) …at the expense of those evil Americans.
So it’s doubly righteous; it must be a wonderful idea, maybe even necessary.
My rule of thumb is that it takes two generations for the blatantly thin excuse justifying some immoral act by the ruling class to become an unquestioned and unquestionable fundamental belief.
We’re getting there with the idea that carbon is killing the planet, therefore our xxxparasitesxxx benevolent managers are entitled to charge us ever more money for ever worse energy in order to stop it.
We’ve long since been there with the idea that citizens are incompetent at best, therefore our parasites are entitled to gather ever more power to themselves at our expense. They can’t unbelieve that now; it’s an underlying assumption for everything else and it feels unnatural, wrong, evil to even look at where the belief came from or what the evidence says.
The only voices that Marx Carnage will heed speak from Buckingham Palace/the City of London, Brussels and Beijing.
“Digital Services Tax” eh?
Let’s see…
The SWIFT system is a digital service – so institute a 50% digital service fee on Canada and Canadian companies with an additional charge equal to any Canadian fees on all transactions.
The US Stock Markets provide digital services – so institute the same 50% digital service fee on them all with an additional charge equal to any Canadian fees on all transactions.
Let’s make it retroactive as well, back to the origin point of the Canadian Digital Services Tax.
That $2B will look like peanuts.
I like the way you think! Retribution not revenge!
LOL… IMESHO, charge the Canadian NHL teams the same amount for an entertainment tax, and see how that works out!!!
Everyone on the thread has a valid, serious comment…. I thought that a little humor might help.
Baseball teams, too!!
7 NHL clubs, 3 MLS (men’s soccer) clubs, 1 NBA club and 1 MLB club. Could make a tidy sum.
Is taxation the answer?? ‘We’ usually get left with the bill! How about breaking up the ‘power’ of the ‘digital services’ in the economic war………encouragement of more cooperative companies?? Companies too Big to fail are like Big government IMHO.
Why should ‘digital services’ from the US be going to Canada in the first place and vis versa??
It’s far from the preferred situation, but sometimes one must fight fire with fire and it wouldn’t be very long before it was all rescinded. Canada wouldn’t survive financially and Canada and Canadians would foot the bill while it did. Note it has nothing to do with “cooperative” or “uncooperative” companies – this is the Canadian government that is trying to be robber barons and indirectly the Canadian people, as much of it will be used for their benefit (what isn’t skimmed off by politicians that is) via government funding or services.
Why are there such services between countries? In the case of any of the systems – because people want what the companies in other countries provide. For example, if you wish to trade US stocks efficiently and in a timely manner, you must have digital connections with and services from the US stock exchanges. The alternative is to physically drive/fly to the US to execute your transactions which is neither efficient or timely.
Now let’s look at one of the services that is being targeted by Canada – a social media company. Canada could – and at some scale may – have their own, but in order to exchange information and talk with the rest of the world, you have to connect to the rest of the world. When the connection to the rest of the world is provided by a company outside your own country, then you must use their services – even if it’s only an exchange at your border, it’s still a digital service being provided.
Another example would be something like movies. If you wish to watch movies or series made in America and streamed by American companies – you have to use their digital services.
Of course one can choose not to as an individual or a company, just as one can with social media – or stocks – or any other service provided, be it by a company in your own country or another. Case in point, I’ve never had a fakebook or spaces account and rarely watch TV and have never paid for a streaming TV service or cable. My choice.
Game theory says if they cooperate we cooperate. It also says that if they don’t cooperate we don’t cooperate. They want a digital services tax with retroactive charges we do the same at the same level.
Never the same level – always at a higher level…
You’re citing internet services; connecting to the world! I’m old fashioned and don’t want connections with the world every minute of the day, getting the news from every corner of the world is overwhelming!!
Heck I don’t like 24 hour news, weather by the minute, and politics.
I don’t need 24 hour entertainment, period………. I don’t like world commerce. I don’t like international politics as a part of my life………but the internet dictates that to be up to date I have to be on it. The world has become smaller, what a hoot.
Taxation/tarrifs/foreign aid/foreign diplomacy/ international companies/international military/international money/international schooling/international immigration …………….it’s all gotten out of hand! Bigger is not better.
God Help US
Digital services are those which take place OVER the internet.
We all have the ability to choose for ourselves what we do or don’t consume or use and should feel no obligation to do so, just as I choose not to do in the majority of cases. As an aside, the internet doesn’t dictate its use to be up-to-date, it simply provides a medium in which to do so if one chooses to use it (i.e. it isn’t the reason, anymore than a gun is the reason someone shoots another).
In regards to international trade, it’s been going on for most of history and to a degree is necessary as a result of all places not having all things or the resources or abilities to make them – and there are some things we do need to make in order to protect our nation, her people, and our way of life, whatever it might be. That is far different than the ‘consumerism’ that has taken over so many.
Would definitely agree much of what you list has gotten way out of hand and that a much simpler, slower paced life that consisted only of our immediate surroundings would be fantastic in many aspects – but unfortunately that is what has gotten us into the current pickle we are in and due to the motives and desires of the globalists one which precludes us from going into full isolation as it wouldn’t prevent what could and may occur if we become ostriches.
The key is finding a healthy balance, which will vary by person. One doesn’t need to know all things in all places. One does need time away from the insanity and spent with our Lord and Savior.
ANY services, manufacturing, entertainment with massive oversights by the ‘Government’ are always bound to go to shite!! “Oversights’ lead to control! Always, every time, no exceptions!!
Getting ‘governments’ in control of information systems whether for stock market interaction, , movies/entertainment, social media, or just plain old censorship, personal information, and downright spying is not the answer. AND neither are worldwide MONOPOLIES that provide the governments the access.
Sorry, I love Agatha Christy’s movies, BBC shows, and other entertainment provided by the UK, but I don’t like their ‘government/monarchy’ using my entertainment likes to be used nefariously.
When ‘government’ is involved everything goes to shite!! Look the way of ‘newspapers’ and TV when ‘government’; heck look at any ‘public services’ corrupted by ‘government’ oversight – medicine, pharmacy, schools, colleges, food chains, etc – they make a Big Government! The Bigger the Government the smaller is Our share of the running of a nation.
God Help US
I don’t dislike ‘progress’ I just want ‘government out of ‘real’ progress.
So China owned GE is returning to the US; negotiated by the ‘government’………..get it??

@mgeist tells WSJ it is “shocking” how Canadian officials — under former PM Trudeau and current PM Carney — dismissed the risks of irking the U.S. and face severe retaliation with a digital services tax. On WSJ wires:
Cont….
B.C. owned by the Chinese: SAD!
https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/ottawa-supporting-bc-in-creating-jobs-in-china
At least someone reports on it! Any loans backed by government banks or monies (the people) of all countries should require the country (people) benefit by building it! I’m sure our own crooked politicians do it here, including private banks that get bail outs from we the people! Sad reality!
American coal trains head north several times a day here in Western Washington going north into British Columbia for loading onto ships heading for China. These are BNSF trains owned by Berkshire Hathaway (railroad belonging to Warren Buffet). Mr. President, STOP THESE TRAINS NOW ! American coal is earning Canada a TON OF MONEY, helping our adversary, China, while Canada ROBS US BLIND !
Also, this very day, I saw a steady stream of private vehicles on Interstate 5 here in Washington state with Canadian license plates. Canadians are really shafting the USA.
Also there is a long stream of Canadian tractor trailers up and down I-5, EVERY DAY. Stop all this trucking right now, Mr. President. Don’t let these Canadian THIEVES earn another dollar as they royally screw the USA !
Close the F-n border with Canada, IMMEDIATELY ! No Trains ! No Trucks ! No Canadian tourists !
I crossed several weeks ago. Not a Canadian hardly in line to cross at the border.
US border agent asked if we were coming over to support the US economy. Absolutely I said. We try to cross monthly and eat at a US restaurant. With our dollar the way it is, it would be much cheaper to spend our dollars Canada side, but we don’t. We spend a fair bit of money in the US.
I don’t know why you would want that tap turned off??
DD
Thank you. He’s referring to the coal being shipped to China rather than for our own or Canadian use through personal or business. That’s what I understood from it anyway.
We are planning to rent a place in February for a month somewhere in the desert. We have been visiting for years and love it there. My husband is a Geologist so he loves all the different landscapes.
I find it very funny that during the Freedom Convoy the Truckers were called far right fascists because they were speaking out for Canadians forced to show papers and be jabbed during Covid.
Now, since the Liberals here have TDS all of a sudden its “elbows up and Canadians Stand Together”
So when the Left does something it’s perfectly okay.
100% we should have first pick of all that coal! I know the green energy scam has robbed the US blind! The EPA and most likely my blue state no longer lets us purchase firewood stoves! They have to sell them as coal with the possibility of burning wood! Any grants for low income are electric or heat pumps only. It’s sickening what the left has done!!
Great stuff. But a better ending would be Trains, Plains and Automobiles……….:<}
Trump is going to have to make an example of a country or two. Personally I support prohibitive tariffs that completely destroy the Canadian economy. We need something like an immediate 500% tariff on everything Canadian and schedule the next round of negotiations for January of ‘26. Announce our exit from the USMCA effective January of ‘26 with tariffs retroactive to July ‘25. Then just sit back and watch Canada implode. They’re parasites not friends.
500% tariff on everything Canadian sounds good plus a retroactive digital tax.
Tax them into the ground.
Tax the air the breathe from the us.
Tax their grannys.
One, two, three, four
One, two (one, two, three, four)
Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Should five percent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
I’ll tax the street
(If you try to sit, sit) I’ll tax your seat
(If you get too cold, cold) I’ll tax the heat
(If you take a walk, walk) I’ll tax your feet
(Taxman)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Don’t ask me what I want it for
(Ah, ah, Mr. Wilson)
If you don’t want to pay some more
(Ah, ah, Mr. Heath)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
Now my advice for those who die (taxman)
Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman)
‘Cause I’m the taxman
Yeah, I’m the taxman
And you’re working for no one but me (taxman)
Trump doesn’t want to punish the decent people of Canada but he does want to go after there dumb leaders and stop that sucking sound!!
Collateral damage is unavoidable, no matter how much planning goes into prevention.
I get Dan Dale’s point about Canadians spending in the U.S., and I’m curious about Keeler’s take. The Canadian citizen perspective matters, but it’s irrelevant to the decisions needed to MAGA. I’ve got Canadian friends, met through work, I want to talk to at our next event. But it’s time to make examples of countries led by people beholden to anyone but their own citizens: Canada, Mexico, England, and, yes, the U.S. Congress.
We’re dealing with Mexico. Sheinbaum’s call for illegals to rise up in our streets, after they’ve broken our laws to enter and stolen from my family through government handouts, is a step too far. It’s time to crush Mexico’s economy and make life harder for its people. Why? Because if it gets bad enough, they might finally oust the cartel-controlled leaders and grow the spine to tackle the cartels themselves, who kill and maim them anyway.
Same goes for Canada. Instead of replacing Trudeau with someone who has a different vision, they elect Mega Trudeau, and he pulls this stunt. The U.S. needs to flex its economic muscle to squash these clowns.
As for Congress, going after cartel money will expose the rot, corrupt members of Congress, state governors (looking at you, Katie Hobbs), judges, and state legislatures.
Drop the hammer. I’m sick of 60% of my hard-earned money being stolen through payroll taxes, income taxes, real estate taxes, property taxes, car taxes, food taxes, specialty taxes, and fees for licenses tied to our damn rights. All while these government hacks keep kicking us in the teeth by giving it to the illegals they support over their own citizens.
The irony? Sheinbaum fears the cartels who could kill her, and Carney’s in China’s pocket. Both are more scared of their puppet masters than anyone else.
You understand it’s the CIA and Mossad funding the cartels, right?
Ok. Sure. And? What’s your point? FFS. So, I guess, you opposing going after the cartel money systems? I mean if it’s just the CIA, then just walk right in there adn take them down. C’mon, it’s easy. Lead the way.
So…
Sure. Sure. Sure.
The Trump scare worked for the left in Canada for the election I think this is Trump scare 2.0 because the Canadian socialists want to coerce enough Canadians to go along with the program. They will use this scare tactic and waving the Canadian flag to extort support from Canadians who should know better.
They are more likely to support the Canadians who want to succeed from their insanity.
Did you mean “secede”??
What you also have to remember is that ALL traditional media in
Canada is on the government payroll so the level of ignorance in the
elbows up crowd us breathtaking.
Who does Carney think he’s dealing with? You Canadians can’t even win the Stanley Cup!
Burn 🔥, hahaha 😂.
Go Cats!
Sick of them just as I got sick of the Bolts pretty quick.
Against the tropical Florida Panthers, yet. Two years in a row.
Yea, its their big sports export and they haven’t won one since 1993.
When your economy is 1/13th the size of your opponent and you need their $60 billion trade deficit / income, and you’re in a trade war, why not offer the first blow. What could possibly happen.
The problem is that Carney thinks he’s using a sling shot but he’s only got a wetted wad of paper and a straw with a hole in it.
Game Theory happens.
The mouse has become so comfortable lying next to the lion that it believes it can gnaw its tail without waking the sleeping beast.
Well put, Nowut Ameen!
Canada – the slow motion train wreck.
Ditto for the EU.
Sounds like Canada has chosen to be an instrument for the EU. so be it. Glad the talk of them becoming a state is quiet. Never liked that idea. Got enough of its kind. By the way, build your own dome. We’re not sharing.
Canada 🇨🇦 GDP

President Trump, “Retroactive eh, hold my coke.”
Diet Coke. 😁
To understand all this and get a better true background on the situation, I did some reading following a search “Chrystia Freeland failing Canadian economy”.
I got article after article that shows us the deep trouble that their economy has been in for a long time now– to the degree that Chrystia Freeland quit the job.
It’s been a downward slide in Canada for decades now..
Canada has an economy that has been going down the drain because of their economic policies and now it looks like they are looking to do a heist upon us to solve their money issues- I’d say it’s because they don’t know what else to do to truly solve their issues.
They need jobs and lower costs of living, they need to get that place booming like Donald Trump is doing for us BUT how can they do such a thing given their political bullshit talk?
We all know they can’t walk back their Socialism and yet we all also know that Socialism fails- and it is.
What is probably more important to see right now is how failing Socialism backs these countries into a corner and we see this sort of ugly lashing out as Canada is doing right now.
Which is essentially the argument Justin Trudeau carried to Mar-a-Lago, that ended with President Trump saying, “then just become a 51st state.”
President Trump has provided Canada a way out by offering a road less traveled, one which leads to becoming an American State! But Carney playing the hardball/machismo game chose the heavily traveled well worn road of socialism strewn with countless countries in the ditch and that will make all the difference in the complete destruction of Canada! JMO
Something isn’t adding up here.
Is Mark Carney really this stupid?
Either something else must be ready to drop or his payola is really really big to destroy his own country.
IF 51ST state occurs, then thei would be NAU super nation, probably would see Greenland too. Which helps complete 10 Super nations push from Club of Rome black nobility. One small step from ONE WORLD SYSTEM AND beast system. *NAU is north american union. Exactly what Clinton and Bush tried to rollin with Y2K issues. Sounds like all the same bs. IMO.
Remember also that a lot of the Chinese fentanyl comes across Canadian and Mexican borders with tacit approval by both governments in exchange for Chinese cash.
I really enjoy listening to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent! I don’t remember demented, pedo Joe Biden having anyone in his Administration as sharp and knowledgeable about the markets and economics as him!!! To me his intelligence is obviously off the charts!!! JMO. Godspeed Scott Bessent!
The term Snow Mexicans is an unwarranted insult to Mexico which after all is a real country and not an outpost of the WEF united only by smug attitudes that at least they are not Americans.
Ottawa’s ego write checks that their butts can’t cash.
If the DST remains in place, President Trump will certainly retaliate. He’ll be smart about it. I don’t know anybody serious who thinks it’s in our interest to have an economic basket case on our northern border. Remember we share a 5,525 mile border with Canada, and 90% of Canada’s population lives within 100 miles of that border.
We already have an economic basket case on our northern border. They shouldn’t be allowed to try to fix their socialist caused issues on our backs.
Ok. Canada should be dead to USA, as in:
NOBODY, No lights, AND NOTHING from Canada enters USA. Americans going there cannot come back from/via Canada. Gotta fly to another country first to get flight in.
Nobody. No goods. No flights. No monies. No phone calls. No nothing. Dead to us.
Many Americans willing to feel real pain over this but are so done with this shitz.
Canada is a failing Socialist country. They can not support their government with the existing taxes. As Margret Thrasher observed “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”
Hey Carney!
Why not make your DST retroactive to 20 years? Go big or don’t go at all.
That ought fix your woes for a few more years until the next crash?
HAHAHAHA!
I really like Scott. He explains things simply even though he’s obviously very smart.
He helps people understand what’s actually going on. I’m ready for Powell to go because he seems very political in his decisions and he doesn’t make decisions that are good for the economy,
I guess June 27, 2025 is a day of surprise for me. It is a day MAGA collectively showed outrage in defense of those poor, unfortunates Bezos and Zuckerberg.
Small minds think what?
The big tech companies maybe ought to change the results of all Canadian based inquiries to say something along the lines of “no results are available to your region”. Place Canada in a digital black hole. Does AWS, Microsoft or Google host services to the government or large companies in Canada? Shut down services immediately,
Or maybe just triple fees to Canada to cover the losses the retro-tax creates.
That I can read the most interesting comments on Canada at our wonderful US site, CTH, is ironic eh??
DST is like the county here in Virginia where I live they tax me for owning a vehicle, and property. They are all greedy and hate the people that they so call serve.
If you add up the iq of Biden’s entire cabinet, you don’t even come close to Scott Bessent.
Spare a thought for us Conservatives in Canada. Our Freedom Convoy. Our overwhelmingly conservative common sense population outside the urban progressive socialist cities. The liberals are so naive and so stupid. In a way, I hope it does go badly so that some people might wake up. I’m not holding my breath since TDS is alive and well here in the north. Ugh.
And spare a thought too for the many American conservatives and patriots who live smack dab on the border. Many of us have family and business interests on both sides.
Now I get a sense of how families in 1861 must have felt living along the Mason-Dixon line.
How great is Scott Bessent? I traded interest rates for 25 years. He speaks my language but he is the best Treasury Sec since Bob Rubin.
Duplicitous Snow Mexicans?
BWAHAHAHAHA!
I have an inlaw that is Canadian. Years of “Justin Trudeau is so handsome!” turns into “Mark Carney is so smart!”. She is sincere. There is no fixing that mess without outside influence like tariffs. The Canadian narcissistic ruling class should be disciplined….and castigated at every opportunity.
Thank you President Trump! Please keep up the good work!!
Canada has become nothing but a subservient client province of China. The people of Canada are so uninformed, they have no idea their country is now at the complete mercy of the ruthless communists in China.
The Canadian people are on the very threshold of finding out how quickly their economy is about to turn to shambles because of the lies they have been fed by Trudeau and company for MANY years.
This is going to get ugly soon.
Snow Mexicans….lol! So true.
Her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard! Where so they find these women?
