Previously, President Trump announced: “I am proud to announce that, after much consideration and negotiation, US Steel will REMAIN in America, and keep its Headquarters in the Great City of Pittsburgh. For many years, the name, “United States Steel” was synonymous with Greatness, and now, it will be again. This will be a planned partnership between United States Steel and Nippon Steel, which will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy. The bulk of that Investment will occur in the next 14 months.
This is the largest Investment in the History of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. My Tariff Policies will ensure that Steel will once again be, forever, MADE IN AMERICA. From Pennsylvania to Arkansas, and from Minnesota to Indiana, AMERICAN MADE is BACK. I will see you all at US Steel, in Pittsburgh, on Friday, May 30th, for a BIG Rally. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!”
The event to celebrate the deal between US Steel and Nippon takes place today in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The anticipated start time is 5:30pm, with livestream links below:

I wish I could find the details of this “investment.” Such as what percentage does Nippon now own a US steel? Amongst other things.
Uh huh. Where are you “researching”?
How good or not good this is for US steel remaining a US company.
That’s a location for research? Where in the information sphere does that exist? Would your alternative be to deny US workers steel manufacturing jobs domestically because of Japanese ownership? Would you rather US Steel have purchased Nippon to manufacture steel in Japan? That scenario is what got us here in the first place. This solution is not perfect. But it’s optimal.
What in the wide world of sports are you talking about? I just want the information on how the deal was put together, and how the company proceeds from here.
You’re projecting something. I just cannot tell what with your knee-jerk response to a benign question for information.
And just in case you are a sane individual, I do want to see more American workers employed in high paying jobs. The 2 ideas (wanting jobs and wanting corporate governance clarity) are not mutually exclusive.
“The president made the visit to tout a deal in which Japan’s Nippon Steel invested $14 billion in the famous company rather than buying it outright, a prospect which was long a political controversy.
The precise terms of the deal are murky, but it’s been described in broad sweeps as a compromise that keeps the corporate entity with an American-majority board and a US government veto over decisions.
“This is an incredible deal for American steel workers, and it includes vital protections to ensure that all steel workers will keep their jobs and all facilities in the United States will remain open and thriving,” Trump said.”

Footballfan, there’s some info here, in this article. And you’re exactly correct to be thinking critically about what the terms are, how the deal was put together and how this moves forward. It looks like foreign based investment with parameters to employ a,ericams and sell as USA made steel. Which will be a win win for both.
Thank you.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s website has tracked this deal since it was first proposed. And they’ve also reported on USX’s never-enacted proposals to modernize and clean up the ET Works. It’s not hard to find this information if you look.
Retired Magistrate here: My husband and I grew up in steel towns located near the Ohio River; Steubenville, Ohio and Portsmouth, Ohio respectively.
During the 50’s and 60’s both towns were thriving due to the mills paying good wages. Buyers from the department stores went to New York to purchase the latest fashions so people who lived in the mill towns could have the latest styles if they so desired. As time went on, the mills started closing down because they could not compete with cheap foreign steel.
Today, both Steubenville and Portsmouth are just depressing memories of what they used to be. Vacant store fronts, high crime rates and drug problems abound in what were once thriving communities.
So, needless to say I am thrilled that US Steel will remain in Pittsburg and produce high quality steel.
The scene you describe, Marcia was repeated countless times all over Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Many causes for this, but the root cause of it all boiled down to greed.
Greed from every angle, to be sure. But nothing has really changed much. Our stock market is all about greed regardless of who loses out. My returns aren’t acceptable high? Call money manager, they call companies not returning a high enough profit, company lays off more workers (maybe even someone you care about) or outsources more production.
Your well-written description could apply to any number of cities and towns in America. It’s going to take a long time to recover.
True, and because it will take years to recover, that is why President TRUMP’S agenda needs true MAGA believers and leaders right now and after 2028 to shepherd it into the rest of the century.
Amen!
I don’t know about that recovery time.
Its being intentionally spurred on in Trump time, and he is openly discussing the why fors.
When they created the rust belt, they were not being blatant of honest about it, and kind of slow rolled it.
Lest we forget, in addition tobtariff free access to our market if consumers, he is setting up to have reliable low cost energy and low corporare tax rates.
Put it all together, no country is going to be as attractive for companies as the U.S.
Looking forwards to his tackling oppressive over regulation.
I remember when Dad was transferred from our NWGA Cement Co. to Wheelersburg, Ohio in 1981-ish. I stayed behind to finish college, but I vividly remember Portsmouth and the factories along the Ohio River. My first view was at night and the factories were illuminated and the smoke/steam was rising in the night sky. It was much different than my little town in some ways, but it was also very reminiscent of small town values. Some of Portsmouth seemed to be still “holding on”, but it was just a matter of time until it succumbed to the foreign takeover. So sad.
I remember the mill towns with the Sandlots nearby and the bumpy sidewalks. Portsmouth was big compared to my little town, but we did have Goodyear Mill and the village back in the day, but sadly, it is a thing of the past. Those were Andy Griffith days for us. Sure do miss them. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
It is so sad. These were people who worked hard and then it was all pulled out from under them.
Sometimes I think we need a new way of looking at ownership. Maybe there is a way for people to participate in ownership. Owning stock is not the same thing and I’m not talking about employee ownership. I just feel that as a society, and without becoming socialists, we need to find a way to keep bean counters from pulling the rug out from under people who give their lives to a company. Or another way would be to require that companies who want to pull the rug out to compensate employees, which might cause them to think twice before they succumb to greed.
One good thing now is that the families of people spread out all over the country might be able to find a way back to “the good times.” I’m sure there were many people spread out all over the country who watched today’s rally and remembered and maybe who started to dream again of better days to come.
My father told a very similar story of growing up in his hometown, the heart of our once mighty steel industry. That was Braddock. PA, now a depressing ghetto.
I hope all the announced plans come to fruition. I still think this is shameful that an over 100 year old US company is in cahoots with a foreign company. Andrew Carnegie is spinning in his grave.
Do you believe in adages/proverbs and their origins being common sense/experiences and wisdom? How about “desperate times call for desperate measures” or “politics makes for strange bedfellows”? Would you deny these are those times? Carnegie was far from universally, situationally applicable.
MAGA FABULOUS!!

Pittsburgh native here. USSteel – or should I say USX as steel is just a small page in their friggin “portfolio” – committed over a decade ago to invest $1B +/- in the ET Works, to bring its technology up to world class standards AND to reduce the pollution it puts into the neighborhood’s air and water. USX did nothing … even suggested they’d rather shutter the works rather than spend money.
Nippon Steel is going to execute the plan that an American corporation left on the shelf. Nippon Steel is not a Big Panda franchise. Jobs and a cleaner environment in the Mon Valley will be the result. What’s not to like?
