As I’ve previously posited, it’s possible that Trump has been setting up Ukraine for a fall, but he simply had to prep the ground first, by making reasonable overtures toward peace that he knew all along Zelensky would be incapable of agreeing to or honoring. Now the feigned indignation merely marks the transition to Phase Two of the planned demolition of the deep state’s Ukraine project.
Perhaps a nuance – I don’t believe Trump set up Zelensky for a fall. Trump set up Zelensky to make a moral and imperative choice. So far, Zelensky is choosing to fall badly. Everyone gets a final call. Zelensky, et al. are making their beds.

It does not matter if the casualties and material cost figures of the war v/v Russia used by President Trump are accurate or not …. the number is large and President Putin as well as the Russian Nation has paid a very high price …. that high price is horrific no matter how accurate and President Putin has paid a political price that impacts the of the political legacy he plans to leave behind.
That is the purpose of citing those high numbers. President Trump is keeping the cost front and center as part of the discussion. Unlike Stalin in WWII, President Putin has to pay attention to losses or end up deposed like his predecessor (as well as have Russia possibly fragmented just a little more) was over the looses incurred in Afghanistan by a materially larger USSR.

Perhaps many are missing how the game is played. For politicians, taking responsibility for anything painful and unpopular is like grabbing the Third Rail. Zelensky can’t afford to be perceived in Ukraine as having been happy with Ukraine losing territory, Ukraine not brought under the NATO umbrella, etc., in the peace agreement. Trump might even be slamming Zelensky and making other statements as a way of making the Russians believe he is on their side, thoroughly satisfied with their version of what/who caused the war. Putin will of course assume that it’s a ruse, and will pretend to be convinced. Everything will come down to how much Putin wants/needs a respite — and whether Trump can/will build a framework that keeps a lid on things longterm.
There will be no ceasefire, no freezing of the conflict, Russia has moved slowly and allowed the Ukraine military to attack and take heavy casualties, SOMEBODY sort out the casualty figures Trump is using. My money is on the attached, Ukraine has over one million dead, Russia about 90K,Lavrov has stated many times EU, Ukraine are agreement incapable, he walked through all the agreements made by Ukraine, guaranteed by France, Germany, the UN etc. Eventually Trump team will understand that Russia will set the terms on how the war with Ukraine is ended .
