Wow, some of those Ukrainian guys at the table have a future in Hollywood, as stereotypical evil “Russian” or Eastern European godfather-henchmen types. I’m not saying this because I’m pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian. I DO believe Ukrainian and Ukrainians have a right to a state and self-determination. I DO believe that Putin’s goal is territorial expansion into Europe to recapture “historic Russian territories”, and he said as much in his interview with Tucker Carlson. However, I also KNOW that this war is characterized by “gangsterism” on both sides of the border. One of the reasons Russian’s initial invasion failed was that a lot of their war stocks were not there, or not in usable condition when the balloon went up, due to corrupt Russians (most of whom have probably fallen out of windows by now) stealing the funds or simply not doing their jobs. The Ukrainians operate like the Mafia, the very last thing that Ukrainian leadership cares about is the fate of the poor slobs that get sent into battle. Corrupt doesn’t begin to cover it.
As an old cold warrior, I don’t have a dog in this fight. Ukraine used to be part of the corrupt Soviet empire, and nothing in 1989 changed that culture. The Russians are always the Russians, no matter who’s in the Kremlin. It’s bad guys versus bad guys, and I don’t want the good guys (us!) getting mixed up in it.
Hell, I’ve long since come to a point where I want the USA out of NATO, to form individual alliances with TRUSTED allies who come closest to sharing our world view, goals, and moral values. Marriages of convenience may be necessary, but those aren’t allies. (Britain, incidentally, unfortunately passed from trusted ally to a marriage of convenience a long time ago. I just spent some time diving into the German media to get a handle on the response to Vance’s speech. The consensus was near shock. They were all (and I mean all) expecting the typical boilerplate political speech filled with qualifiers and “hopefullys”. No one saw it coming. The media over there was shocked that his speech didn’t just give the usual “Well, peace negotiations are difficult and arduous, and we hope we can come to an agreement.” Vance didn’t touch at all on Ukraine. According to the German media, he finger pointed at the EU and told them they had to do better.
In other words, the response was surprise on the subject matter, and indignancy that the US thought they were in a position to level such accusations. Interestingly, Merz (the CDU hopeful in the coming election) also took this point of view. I really think Vance’s words (and the fact that MAGA is sitting right there in downtown Munchen) does the AfD a whole lot of favors. And, even in the last poll round up AfD was gaining momentum while the CDU was on the downturn. They are only 7% points apart. Let’s see what it turn into in the next week.
I loved Vance’s speech to that body of Europeans; it could have been titled “The Free Ride Is Over” for all you Europeans, time to clean up your own messes.

I took Sundance’s advice and watched first without sound. I did not watch VP Vance, but focused on all the others at the table. The second time I watched with sound, and again, I focused on the Ukrainian Team members, Gen. Kellogg and the US team.
I came away thinking that this is not going well. The US Team is dug in, and the Ukrainians are sullen with frozen faces. Sec. Rubio is shockingly stone cold. Even Gen Kellogg appeared to be stiff.
This was not a friendly meeting, and with Zelenskly’s comment about “stopping Putin” was met with no acknowledgement. I got the feeling that he’s worn that line out and while it may have worked with Victoria Nuland, Lindsey Graham and others, it hit a brick wall with this US Team.

I met a large group of Ukrainian people who had lived in the USA in a small town. The women were all beautiful blondes and the men were smart and sharp. They were Orthodox Christians struggling in a strange country. They have since moved away. So many who live or have lived within the borders of Ukraine are or were genuine Ukrainians; others, well, not so much.
My only hope in all this, besides the war ending, is that they deliver PALLETS full of incrementing evidence of all the corruption that has gone on with regards to our own politicians…

We are a long way from Justice, but I am hopeful. I think dictators and kings can administer immediate and efficient justice. The US constitution has more respect for the individual, and there for evidence must be sure. And more importantly, since we have a republic, it is ideal that the majority of the population agree with the justice to be served.
DOGE, MAGA, are in a process, that I pray, when done, is going to make even the most crazy liberal throw up with the putridness of what has been done to our country and the consequences to individuals, the disregard for human life.
Interestingly, the most crazy liberals and woke will be blind to the disrespect to human life, but they will go ballistic over the lives of beagles sacrificed in drawn out silence while their vocal cords were cut.
