This is excellent news. There are two distinctively different sets of tariffs scheduled to roll out in the next few days, weeks and months.
One set of long-term tariffs called MACRO tariffs focused on reciprocity and based primarily on economic fairness. The second and more urgent set, are focused on the immediacy of national security, border security and the demand for allies to shut down their support for fentanyl distribution.
The Border Security tariffs of 25% against Mexico and Canada start on Saturday. The media and corporate interests in/around Wall Street are in maximum apoplexy mode; however, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnik previously explained the reason for the urgency. The video is 5 minutes and well worth your time if you want to avoid the confusion being pushed by media. WATCH:
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Thursday said he will impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico beginning Saturday, reiterating concerns about illegal migration, fentanyl and trade deficits in remarks to reporters.
“I’ll be putting the tariff of 25 percent on Canada, and separately, 25 percent on Mexico, and we’ll really have to do that,” Trump told reporters while signing executive orders focused on aviation safety.
Trump cited a “number of reasons” for doing so. “No. 1 is the people that have poured into our country so horribly and so much. No. 2 are the drugs, fentanyl and everything else that has come into the country. And No. 3 are the massive subsidies we are giving to Canada and to Mexico in the form of deficits,” Trump said.
“Those tariffs may or may not rise with time,” the president added.
When asked whether tariffs would also be applied to U.S. imports of Canadian oil, Trump said “we may or may not” apply the duties. “We’re making that determination tonight,” he said.
[…] The president also said he was “thinking about something” on China, because they’re sending fentanyl into our country,” but he did not speak to when he might levy tariffs on Beijing or how high he would raise them. After winning election in November, Trump had threatened to impose a 10 percent tariff on Chinese imports.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions between the Trump administration and Mexican and Canadian officials, who are seeking to reassure the new president they are clamping down on border security to stave off the tariffs. Both countries have vowed to retaliate with tariffs of their own if Trump follows through on his threats. (read more)
Personally, I would prefer to see 100% import tariffs on all goods, all of them, every product imported from another country, driving the prices of those products up big time.
Essentially, CTH holds a viewpoint seeing through all the manipulative economic gaslighting over the past several decades. Real results from 2017 through 2020 proved that targeted tariffs do not ever raise the price to U.S. consumers, and now with the added benefit of watching in real time what happened in Russia due to sanctions that cut off the majority of their imports, we have an even more fact-based reason to support 100% tariffs on all import products. This will force the reindustrialization we need.
Tariffs fundamentally change the economic dynamic. Exfiltration of wealth ends and wealth creation within the USA middle-class begins again.

I have read every post and every response so far on this thread. Informative, sometimes contentious, and passionate.
As so often happens the conversations veer off topic, which is natural and is what makes this site, unlike so many others, educative and compelling.
There are those who comment who are not Americans, those who have travelled (some extensively…an education in itself), and those Americans who (as I have done) have lived abroad for extended periods of time (life changing, eye opening, and revelatory). Views expressed reflect those differing experiences.
But the one inarguable truth in my opinon is this…
Imagine a circle with any object in the center. Then place one person on each of the 360 degree points which surround it.
Each person sees the same object, but he or she sees it from their particular location on that circle, influenced by many things…knowledge, education, life experiences, and yes, personal biases. No two people see it the same way. Each brings his or her perspective which others may not have even considered.
My point…which it may seem is completely divorced from the subject of this thread.
I believe it is this which lifts these discussions to an intellectual level I can find nowhere else on the internet. We may agree or disagree; but no one can say that on having taken the time to read here that our world views aren’t enriched, more informed, or perhaps even altered by having read these comments.
These conversations today are not what I expected to find.
Nevertheless, in this age of (I hope diminishing) censorship, I am exceedingly grateful for them…
And for this one off, remarkable site which encourages and allows them.
No other place like this Tree.
Carry on…
Brilliant observations.
Camaraderie-inspiring.
Post of the Year, Betsy!
Been missing you, my friend…blessings as always.
Ditto, Betsy.
😘
I am one of those Non Americans who has been reading here for years. It is my first port of call and in my opinion the most interesting honest site on the internet.
Sincere thanks to all.
PS Can someone explain to me why people do not DIE but pass on. (Where too) Die, Death and Dead are so self explanatory and terms used for thousands of years. I would like to see these terms brought back.
People use terms like “pass on” to soften the blow for the living, to soften their loss. Ironically, the dead are just fine. It’s the living that are f*cked.

Thank you for your insightful and eloquent comment.
No other site offers such enriching conversations based upon Sundance’s posts. Keep up the education.
Sometimes I think we followers of this site “know too much”. But let’s keep learning and educating each other!
As I’ve said probably too often…
My desire to be as informed as much as is possible is sometimes at odds with my desire to remain sane. But there is no currency in ignorance. I am ready and willing to be disabused of mine.
That does not take away from the fact that sometimes, multiple perspectives are not required to see the facts of a situation. Multiple perspectives are what guilty people want to use, because “their truth is unique”. Life does not have to be complicated. Sometimes, yes. Mostly, no.
Dang.
Been reading for years but rarely post.
Moghrey Mie Betsy such a beautiful post Dia Duit 🇺🇸🤠🇺🇸
Too kind, dear Mr jay…thank you.
Well said.
As it is mentioned in the Guidelines for posting – this is a conversation.
Well that goes w/o saying…..
Ha!
Does it?
Agree with and enjoyed your comment and point(as always, dear kind Sis), but(ya knew that was coming didn’t ya?), me thunks if 2 people standing on the circumference of a circle are 360 degrees from one another, they are actually standing at the same point. Might you have meant 180 degrees?
<smiles>
And of course I now must apologize, dear Sis, for not reading your post correctly. I missed that you said standing at each of the 360 degree points.
I’ll now go weed the garden of my mind in penance.
Started to take issue with you there, dear friend. I am too often guilty of fast reading as well. Glad to see I’m not the only member of THAT club!! 😉💕
As always Betsy, you make me feel all the smarter whenever I engage with you in these site conversations. What I find most special about CTH is that I get to converse with people who encourage me to share, grow, learn, step back, and often reassess.
My husband taught with me in a small district in NY. He was an art teacher, taught perspective to the 7th and 9th graders. The best lesson, because although all were looking at the same objects, their drawings looked different, had to look different, based on where they sat in the room. I would remind my classes of those lessons often as it seemed so easy to forget! Can’t ever know what someone else is thinking without putting their perspective in place.
Exactly so, Unicorn. There are some issues which are immutable for me, no matter what arguments might be made against them, the same issues, principles, matters of morals and of God which others here have.
But I am always interested to understand the thought processes of others and the reasons for their comments, not to mention history and expertise in areas I am woefully ignorant of. If for nothing else, they take me down roads I’ve never thought of exploring. We never stop learning, as you say. And there’s never a time I don’t leave a thread more aware than when I arrived.
You said it best….perspective is everything.
Wow long time no see friend. Always great to see you posting. My regards. (One of my aunt’s was an art teacher in NY)
Thank you Colkitto. Always honored to receive your warm greetings!
Could not agree more Betsy this tree that Sundance planted so long ago has truly grown into the intellectual refuge we were all searching for . it is a joy to be here on a daily basis .
LOVE to all of you be well God Bless
R.D.
Oh yes, RED DOG. A joy it most certainly is…first and last stop for me every single day. Blessings, dear sir.
Yeah Betsy! I like a town square where I can debate the issues and viewpoints and learn things, or consider things differently or from various viewpoints……like in engineering you calculated the ‘center of gravity’ – distance from a chosen point, with weight of the parts of an object, then you calculate where it is; or like what is the center of a state – north & south and east & west intersection. At CTH you can give different weights to various comments to form & update (with new data or insights) my estimate of where I am on any particular subject.
Esp where you are at a place where – Everyone is seeking the truth…and SD sets the tempo (and has a large decades old library to pull out thinking from the past and see if it needs revision with updated data points…(goes back to b/f turn of this century??).
Amen, Cm.
Every dinner party I ever went to at my sister in law’s in Wales was filled with good food and drink and the rough and tumble of political discussion. Wouldn’t suit everbody, but I found it exhilarating and educational. I’ve missed it back here in America…our host in the Tree has filled that gigantic hole. Agree.
I ache for discussion with people, anyone, on the other side (dims), but I can’t get any of them to engage. I have high school buddies who refuse to talk about politics with me. The most disappointing part is that some chickenshit politician can interfere with our friendship.
Much ado about nothing.
The ever gracious Betsy Jones, a Treehouse treasure.

For all you contribute every morning on our beautiful Open Thread, Jonrilus, I thank you. You in your branch are one who adds so much to this unique and welcoming place…. 💕
There are ultimately only two viewpoints in life: the Divine viewpoint—rooted in absolute truth (Bible Doctrine) and eternal principles (often associated with our conservative perspective)—and the human viewpoint, which can be science, psychology, sociology, psychiatry, and other human disciplines.
One is unchanging, while the other evolves based on human reasoning, experiences, and shifting societal norms. Understanding this distinction allows us to see why perspectives differ so greatly, yet also why truth remains singular and unwavering.
Always think from the divine view point.
More than in years before I believe at least those of us in these branches do just that, Frederico. Coming face to face with evil as we have seen these last four years in particular and with raw clarity has shown us there is no fence to sit on. It is shocking to me to watch as those we might believe would follow the Divine viewpoint have chosen not to, instead replacing God with the gods of men.
I am sensing in these early days of President Trump’s third term that there is much prayed for change and renewal happening as those infernal gods are finally being consigned to the outer darkness from whence they came. So our nation may return to that Biblical doctrine and its eternal principles which you so beautifully spoke of and which were the foundation of our country at it’s inception. What a welcome gift for our 250th birthday in July.
Nice.

Betsy, your comment reminded me of the famous story of “the blind men and the elephant” (https://mythgyaan.com/blind-men-and-the-elephant/)
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!
Which is why hearing so many divergent perspectives is so valuable to filling in more pieces of the total picture.
We’re on the same page, Gulag. That tale came to me as well. And yes…
We read and digest, reject or accept, sift then discard or keep. I’ve been drawn down roads which are enlightening, many times because of what I’ve read from others. How right you are, my friend.
Well, I’m wondering will this post be attacked for being in the wrong place? Not trying to stir $hit, but I saw a brilliant analogy written by an aviator on what happened with the Black Hawk crash and was attacked by posters for being in the wrong spot. This obviously has nothing to do with this thread.
Not attacking the post or the moderators here at all. I just think we ought to give people some slack for not always staying on the topic at hand.
So, agreeing with you with sarcasm in my own way.
Utmost respect for my fellow Treepers. Longtime contributor to Ms Lucianne & would call her my friend. I did respect her admonition; “this is a salon, not a saloon.” There are occasional heated back and forths. I get it. These are historic times. The future of our country and children and grandchildren is at stake. Can’t help but wonder if there aren’t planted drive by snipers on this site. We should call them out. Regardless, this is the most informative site for truthers and patriots on the internet. I am a true disciple of CTH. God’s blesssing on us all!
I don’t think it could be more clear: The “study” is the warning. Manufacturers need to respond accordingly to get ahead of it. It’s sad, in a way, that these businesses do not operate out of loyalty to the USA. Their advertising often deceives consumers into thinking so but they don’t actually behave that way. I think it would be amazing if Trump called out these companies who manufacture in other countries while pretending to be loyal to the American consumer. It would be interesting to know if such messaging would be a good idea or a bad one — to call them out that way.
Great idea.
Name names.
Challenge them to Prove-their-Loyalty to M🇺🇸A🇺🇸G🇺🇸A!
Kash, RFKJ and Tulsi LED by EXAMPLE.
—> NAMED NAMES
—> PINNED the TAIL on the DONKEYS.
Let’s see if President Trump noticed and “follows their LEAD”!
The goal of a profit-oriented corporation is profit. Period. It’s a psychopathic entity.
This was exploited by China to draw manufacturing away from the US.
And why so many once-great pillars of US industry are hollow vestiges of what they once were: The bean-counters took over, fired the experienced engineers and other skilled workers, and outsourced as much as they could.
Boeing, GE, 3M, HP… the list goes on…
It seems most Americans haven’t been paying attention, or just don’t care where things are made.
Understand who is in control of finance, manufacturing, politics, etc.:
All infrastructure and defense materials, parts and machinery MUST be made in the U.S. case in point, shipyard cranes made in China can be controlled by China.
No U.S. agriculture property should be owned by foreigners.
These are national security issues.
Only about 3% of US agriculture land is owned by foreign countries. Canada is by far the largest owner with almost 13 million acres. Next on the list are a few European countries like the UK and the Netherlands. China owns 383,000 acres or 0.03% of US farmland.
No one should own any but Americans.
Exactly
Like in Mexico, an American can lease the land but cannot own it.
Absolutely never— 100%
Do we know the ACTUAL owners of the ‘owners’?
Because inquiring minds like to know, are you saying that because these foreign countries own “only about 3% of U.S. agriculture land” that this number is “ok” as it is not, say, 50%?
Personally, it is my belief, as well as that of many other Americans with whom I have spoken to in regards to this very subject, that the foreign ownership of any and all American soil should be zero, nada, none!
Can someone remind me again how much land the U.S. owns in China, especially land directly adjacent to their military compounds?
I know he’s currently up to his ears in alligators but, hopefully, sooner than later, our awesome Commander-in-Chief takes on this truly “National Security” issue before we get bit in the ass!
“Personally, I would prefer to see 100% import tariffs on all goods, all of them, every product imported from another country, driving the prices of those products up big time.”
Agree, that would cause a rush to bring manufacturing back to the US that would be head-spinning.
The greater benefit of tariffs.
You do realize that a 100% tariff on imports would be devastating to the economy until the manufacturing sector is up and running and their supply network is in place. That process could take several years. Furthermore, some suppliers in the supply chain could refuse to sell to the US. Then what? There are a lot of moving parts to consider.
So you are saying 100% tariff on Ford Chevy Do0dge and Jeep? Many so called American cars and some trucks are built south of the border. All Vehicles made in America are built with foreign parts. Taiffs will drive the price of so called American cars thru the roof.
In fact Honda and Toyota vehicles are more American made than Ford, Chevy, or Dodge.
In the list in the link below Toyota and Honda dominate the top of the list.
Its one of the reasons, besides high dependability, I am proud to drive an American made and built Toyota.
I would like to point out. You and Me pay the tariff. Not the manufacturer. Tariffs may have sorta worked in Trumps first term when the economy was far better. But Now? I see nothing but more Inflation in our future.
https://www.cars.com/articles/2024-cars-com-american-made-index-which-cars-are-the-most-american-484903/
Wrong.
Let’s suppose French wine is not subsidized by France. So if we put a general tariff of 20% on France, you are going to pay $120 for what was a $100 bottle of wine. Now, let’s turn to China who subsidizes everything and President Trump puts a 20% tariff on China. China leaders, being the ultimate ruthless businessmen, have to make a choice. They either assume there is sufficient elasticity in demand in America to let us absorb the increase or they have to lower their prices. Given that the U.S. is the largest importer of Chinese goods, in President Trump’s first term the Chinese decided that if they let the prices at Walmart, Target, Costco, etc. go up, they would lose money. So they “lowered” their prices by devaluing the Yuan against the dollar, making their exports “cheaper” when bought with American dollars. Now the question is will they do that this time and I am willing to bet on the ruthless Chinese leadership to make the same decision this time
Who will cave first, Mexico or Canada? They are under the control of the globalist elites. These countries will have to throw off their own shackles, because we’re up to our necks in our own alligators. They can follow our lead, or get out of the way. Something to consider, both of these countries would squeal like stuck pigs if we closed the border to them. Fact.
Sorry to our Canadian Treepers, but Canada has needed tuned up a little regarding their trade and security interactions with the US for some time. Living on one of the major N/S interstates near the Canadian border, it’s easy to see the number of ways Canada could be helping control the transport of illegal people and substances into the US. There’s far more gaps on the northern US border then the southern border. Canada does need to step things up. By the way, who misses Justeen besides nobody
Fentanyl kills Canadians. Like my errant nephew.
And somehow Cocaine crosses North across the Northern Border.
STOP ALL DRUG TRAFFICKING NORTH OR SOUTH.
DEATH PENALTY for all Drug Traffickers. And you can start with the billionaire family that killed thousands of Americans with Oxycontin.
I’m with you 1000%.
Not Canada for sure. They’d rather their system collapse than admit defeat.
Ottawa planning pandemic-level relief for workers, businesses if Trump imposes tariffs, sources say
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-trump-tariffs-canada-planning-massive-relief-workers-businesses/
Like the U.S. in Trump 1, the WHO declared a Pandemic and the White House and Canadian Government put their Jack Boots on to “Flatten the Curve” by killing personal freedom/choice and issuing Death Sentences to Small Business as Corporations kept their doors open.
Ottawa is the Canadian D.C. I hope you are successful in squashing the Cockroaches in D.C. but by the looks of the Senate, some Cockroaches refuse to die.
ps Trudeau has been Dead Man Walking since the Trucker’s Convoy ran him down.
Colombian President raises ante for Mexico and Canada to remove Trump tariffs…Winning!
https://nypost.com/2025/01/31/world-news/president-gustavo-petro-urges-undocumented-colombians-in-the-us-to-return-home/
Peters is a numbskull. He never spoke out about our open borders when Biden was President and always voted along party lines in that respect. He knew about the Trump “two-step” tariff policy with Canada and Mexico, but plays dumb. Glad he’s not running for reelection.
Oh happy happy day! The Daimler Germans that moved Freightliner truck manufacturing, both assembly and parts supplying, out of the US, primarily down to Mexico are having sads.
All their little plans, budgeting and forecastings just got blown up.
They’re going to be busy bees coming up with many new Powerpoint slides lol!
They can just change their 4 year business plans…business does that all the time.
You do need friends, or at least allies in the world. Provoking Canada may be a shock and awe moment now. And a time for gloating. But down the road? Who knows of what unforseen effects may develop. Short term gain. L0ng term ….?
My thoughts too, Canada does need a tuning up as one commenter said but treating everyone as an enemy doesn’t make much sense. I am not particularly close to the people who live next door to me but I am still nice to them knowing I might need help myself someday.
The USA is the most powerful nation on earth but the USA is not the only nation. Boycotts can work both ways. NO ONE in the world needs to buy California wines for example.
True, but as a Canadian that visits the U.S. nearly weekly, we Canadians need for the U.S.A. far exceeds anything the U.S. requires from us.
My hunch is few middle Americans fully comprehend how many Canadians ( millions) spend months annually in your warmer climes.
Imagine if the U.S. put a “ fee” on entry to the U.S. from Canada.
Americans visit Canada but nothing like the numbers of Canadians going south.
Cheers!
“snowbirds”, they wuz
My neighborhood is full of Canadians. They are smug and condescending. They are takers not givers. (At least the ones in my area.)
Western Canadians specifically from Saskatchewan and Alberta are vastly different than Eastern Canadians. Fir the most part, Westerners are friendly, helpful, hard working, salt of the earth people.
There are far cheaper warm climes to visit and holiday than the US, considering the prohibitive Canadian/US currency exchange rate right now.
You’re missing the point. And as a Canadian we better at the very least understand the point. MAGA means get your house in order FIRST. Once it’s in order, you can be besties with all the neighbours helping above and beyond anyone’s expectations.
But DON’T let them pilfer you while your children watch and scratch their heads, suffering & exposed due to your weakness in making them priority number one. it’s not only weak, but it’s foolish AND not Biblical!
We are Canada’s biggest trading partner, and their liberalism has morphed into Communism.
They allowed China to import steel and aluminum cheaply through their country, they’re not protecting the border effectively anymore with fentanyl still pouring in daily. This is the largest border in the world.
Canada basically took away free speech rights during Covid and punished folk with jail and debanked many of its own citizens.
Maybe you’re not asking the right questions.
“Canada basically took away free speech rights during Covid and punished folk with jail and debanked many of its own citizens.”
And Trudeau crashed to 20% in the polls and never recovered.
Make the above statement again, but replace “Canada” with Joe Biden’s Handlers. Too.
Canada went lock, stock and barrel with selling out Canada, same as the McConnell D.C., as jobs and factories died, and Mexico and China thrived.
Agreed.
Canada’s deep state is part of the club.
Canada’s progressives are vile….. We got more who are as bad, or worse.
The common denominator seems to be big cities.
You are correct Matrix, you do need friends, or at least allies in the world. Provoking the United States by maintaining current policies may be a shock and awe moment now. And a time for gloating. But down the road? Who knows of what unforseen effects may develop. Short term gain. L0ng term ….?
FWIW. Canada completed the TransMountain Pipeline through B.C. from Alberta to Burnaby to get 900,000 barrels per day to tidewater, last year.
And the last I looked 100% of that oil is going by ship to California Refineries.
I believe that Transmountain directly transports petroleum to 4 refineries in the Puget Sound area-
I don’t know how this recent spat affects the oil business, but it brings to the forefront the shared benefits of being “neighborly” to one another.
FYI- from Trans Mtn. website-
Depending on the needs of Trans Mountain’s customers, the amount of product shipped to four general destinations: Kamloops Terminal, Burnaby Terminal, Westridge Marine Terminal or Washington State refineries, varies from week to week. Refined Products: Kamloops or Burnaby where refine petroleum batches are sent to a products terminal and transported within BC for local use. Crude Products: Washington State where crude oils are delivered to refineries for processing; Burnaby Terminal where petroleum is received to be delivered to refineries or loaded onto tankers calling at Westridge Marine Terminal for export.
Such as what, exactly? Less Chinese influence coming from the north?
Like regular Americans, the Canadian people are good, solid people.
I’m not so sure that their government can be considered our friend.
https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1884813232201674799.html
We don’t need allies that we have to “pay” to be allies. We send foreign aid of one kind or another to 197 countries in the world. Why? Because our supposed leader elites in Washington are corrupt and just want their cut. No matter what the costs are to the American taxpayer.
Not sure we need to go 100% on all, I think its smarter to go with targeted tariffs, and to take on different economic competitors, at different times.
As the video explains, the tariffs due Sat. are intended to motivate Canada and Mexico to change their behavior, and if they do, no tariff.
If we impose 100% on the whole world, we can not use tariffs to modify behavior.
PDJT has a tremendous power, and he is wielding it like a scapel, not a sledge hammer.
I can hardly wait till he turns his tariff attention to the EU, LOL.
Canada has a trade surplus with the U.S. right now and they’ve front-loaded exports in anticipation of tariffs being imposed. They’ve also prepared lists of items and the tariffs to be applied in retaliation.
100% agree, Dutchman, with Targeted Tariffs
… quickly followed with continual Escalatory Tariffs until they deliver the required “behavior corrections”.
Think about how many deals are being done before midnight tonight…
25% is a healthy margin to work with…
Trust God.
Fear not.
100% tariff does not necessarily cut off all imports, it just doubles their price. It is also not the maximum. It would be possible to go to 200%, 300%, 1,000% or whatever – there is no upper limit other than an outright import ban.
It is also not necessary to implement the full 100% on day one. POTUS could announce a 100% tariff to be phased in over a period of time. For example he could impose 10% immediately, with an escalator-clause that bumps up an additional 10% every three months: 10% goes to 20% in three months, goes to 30% after six months, etc. Doing that kind of automatic escalation achieves the purpose of motivating companies to relocate production into the US but gives them some time to actually get production started and ramped up. An even slower ramp up is more practical for the manufacturers but if the ramp extends beyond POTUS’ 4-year term there is risk the next POTUS could nix the plan.
Possibilities are endless. All it takes is somebody with the will to take action like our PDJT.
A thing that I don’t like is that over the last forty years or so everything has been monopolized.
Cars, trucks, tractors, machinery, oil, chicken farming, pig farming, they are working on the cattle, banking and the list could go on and on. They are all operating under a few umbrella organizations. I am not sure what the answer is but I don’t think bigger is better.
As for foreign manufacturing, circumstances necessitated we acquire a more dependable automobile. In looking around, we liked the Buick Envision. I started reading up on them. The decision immediately became a hell no. Made in China.
Isn’t everything?
The USA is being Financialized out of existence. Why make stuff when you can skim and churn?
Canada is not without fault, far from it. But Trudeau is toast.
Yet, the catalyst for destroying U.S. industry is the D.C. Congress and Crony Corporate America.
With trinkets and shiny objects like Bitcoin (in 2009 selling for 1/1000th of a penny) churned by whales and narratives to $100, 000 today, why build factories?
China took over U.S. Production with the insistence of D.C. and American Industry.
Ottawa planning pandemic-level relief for workers, businesses if Trump imposes tariffs, sources say
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-trump-tariffs-canada-planning-massive-relief-workers-businesses/
And the Canadian dollar/looney will go from C$1.44 to $1USD down to C$2.00 to buy $1 USD.
Economies get a bit complicated, and if Trump does carve out a bunch of stuff, U.S. factories will start shutting down 30-60 days out.
Will Canada allow our special forces to go in and shut down these Canadian labs?
Canadians would be wise to re-read this Executive Order signed on 20 January,2025 by President Trump. It doesn’t only pertain to Mexico….
designating-cartels-and-other-organizations-as-foreign-terrorist-organizations-and-specially-designated-global-terrorists
3 biggest Organizations involved in manufacturing and distribution of drugs in Canada (and the U.S.) are Hells Babies, Mexican Mob families, and the Canadian Diversity Crew of East Indians and Oriental triads.
Canada has already shut down these labs.
Fentanyl kills Canadians too.
Ask yourself how many Chinese and Mexicans die every year from Fentanyl. The sound of silence is where the profits go.
Canada has only started to scratch the surface of its Fentanyl lab problem. The more they look the more covert “Super-Labs” they find.
https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/canada-fentanyl-super-lab-hot-spot
No, that won’t be necessary. In November 2024, Canadian law enforcement dismantled the country’s largest fentanyl lab to date in British Columbia, which had connections to Mexican drug cartels. We are doing fine by ourselves
Someone please tell Donald Trump we are doing a better job than him or Mexico
I live in Canada. WE are NOT doing a better job than Trump… you must be smoking ALOT of the legal cannabis Trudy unleashed on us. We are full on Chinada & Canindia.
Everywhere you look are articles/stories about how prices will go up under Trump. I was reading a piece on stereo equipment and the author just had to get his digs in about everything would go up due to tariffs. It’s not hard to remember back to Trump’s 4 yrs of tariffs and prices not going up. I think the folks on this site are the only ones in America that remember this.
The best audio equipment is still made in America. It is expensive – Buy once cry once. However, a lot of electronic parts are not made in America, so even American equipment has some foreign parts.
One of the foundational reasons “Made in the USA” is so expensive is that American Corporations, by off-shoring to Mexico and China, have Killed:
Economies of Scale.
Low Production equals High Prices. Ask the U.S. Chamber of Chinese and Mexican Commerce why they killed American Jobs and Factories”
The main argument against tariffs{external revenue} is if they are imposed in conjunction with income taxes{internal revenue} as operational revenue for the Federal Government.
Trust God.
Fear not.
My opinion is that PDJT is going to reduce income taxes to a negligible level. But first, he has to get businesses either returning to the USA and the tariffs pouring in. Combine that with the ridding the Federal Government of all of the wasteful spending and corruption and the American taxpayers will start seeing income tax reductions.
He has mentioned plenty of times how Wm McKinley made America rich with tariffs while having no personal income taxes. I think that is his goal.
The income tax is going away by one of two means.
1. President Trump eliminates it.
2. Enough people discover that it is indeed voluntary, but after the first time that you ‘ volunteered’, you
became obligated.
The way out of it is to file a REVOCATION of ELECTION, ( you are revoking your original election to pay income
taxes ).
You update the withholding with your employer notifying that you do not have the tax obligation.
No fed blasts through your door, confiscates your stuff, or throws you in prison.
Because, the ‘ contract ‘ is fraudulent.
I would encourage every American ‘ citizen ‘ to research this and prove me wrong.
Spent a week in Vancouver a few years ago and was SHOCKED at the thousands of young White Canadians totally stoned on Fentanyl lining the streets just East of the tourist area downtown. It was heartbreaking and totally fixable by the Canadian Government if they wanted to stop the problem.
Obviously, they wanted to destroy a generation of White Canadian children!
Mmm…That sounds very familiar to my experiences in the past few decades when visiting some of the big cities and very rural areas of my beloved America.
I wonder if the tariffs will help both sides of the borders in eradicating the drug problems in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
Not unless and until the Stupids stop ‘using’.
You were in the “Downtown Eastside”. Drugs have replaced the Drunks that used to infest that area.
Death Penalty to Drug Pushers.
You would have noticed if you were somewhere else in Vancouver. You would have thought you were in Hong Kong, unless you went south across the Fraser River where you would have landed in New Delhi.
We were in a very downtown business district a block away from the Olympic Torch on the pier. The restaurants were incredibly good. Great food. Great older hotel. Then we drove up to Whistler along fjords. A great trip but WTH happened to young Canadians???
Next time visit Alberta, Saskatchewan, and places other than Canada’s major cities. You will get an entirely different perspective of the country. Most of Canada is very unlike the major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Montreal.
That is the result of street drugs being legalized in BC, and costing less than alcohol.
I bet that it looked like this:
This is a photo of fentanyl addicts on Kensington Avenue in Philadelphia. The street is known colloquially as “Kensington Beach” (due to the zoned – out addicts just lying on the sidewalk as if they were sunning themselves on the beach) or “Kensington Zombieland” (the above photo explains that name).
” The second and more urgent set, are focused on the immediacy of national security, border security and the demand for allies to shut down their support for fentanyl distribution.”
Isn’t this suppose to be a country’s military’s job? Like it’s Job Number One ? It certainly is suppose to be. What the hell are we paying $900 billion a year for?
How about at least 28,000 America army troops at the border as the Mexican army did back during Trump 1.0?
And how about some army helicopters at the border instead of them crashing into passenger plans at American civilian airports ?
I’d also like to see Pete at the border picking out places to send the US Army.
Am I asking too much?
Don’t overlook that hundreds of $ Billions through NGOs, Bribes, skimming, (use your imagination) was going into the pockets of Friends of the Democratic Party, D.C. Politicians.
Listen to your Senators and ask yourself how many of them are actually working for someone else, not the American People.
And I will be staying up past midnight just to celebrate.
I won’t be celebrating, and I will continue to maintain my friendship with many Americans.
BUT, Canada has gotten sloppy and needs to prioritize Canadian Interests, not the interest of Foreigners like the WEF, WHO, and various grubby fingers filling up the pots of the Canadian equivalent of the Clinton Foundation.
Don’t want Canadian stuff? OK. You had the AutoPact (1 for 1 cars north, cars south) but you elected to bring Mexico into NAFTA/USMCA (at the behest of the “U.S.” Chamber of Commerce owned Senate).
Now you bring in unlimited “Made in / Assembled in Mexico (Chinese stuff).
I think it’s fair to say that we both have a lot of deep cleaning to do, concerning our ‘governments’.
“This will force the reidustrialization we need.” 🎯 💯
Too early for a toast with anything worthy of his observation 🍸 , but here’s a virtual standing ovation to our host, SD.
Just finished For All Mankind miniseries of Moon & Mars miners on Apple TV.
As SD views what is good for US citizens, that series did too.
Loved the ending where the Morlocks eat the Eloi’s lunch….
Planetary & Nationalist Wolverines baby!!
Go PDJT!!
I’m almost finished with the series despite heavy doses of liberal propaganda. But it sure is a fun series despite that.
I’ve never known a President whose actions followed so closely his promises. I’m thinking about his third term. After all, the more time he has, the further he can go. And boy, do we need to move ahead on the problems Biden le us, as well as the problems Obama left us that many people have forgotten. No time for complaints by whiners. Time to support him, a lot better than we did his last term.
The Alberta Premier says the U.S. produces 13 million barrels of Oil per day. And consumes 21 million barrels per day.
So it’s just a matter of turning on a few taps to make up the other 8 million barrels?
Or, some Politician doesn’t know the facts?
the USA could perhaps get 8 million barrels more over time but even then it would be extremely difficult
That production capacity can be built in the US, if the economics are right long term. That was really only an issue with official policy being hostile to the industry. See the green new scam as an example.
In the near term, there are other suppliers for petroleum with it being a global commodity in high demand. Net consumption will not appreciably change, only who’s purchasing from which supplier.
Sure there are other suppliers of crude oil, but they won’t sell it to the US at the discounted price that Canada does.
Have you considered why that heavy sour crude is discounted as it is?
I found a link that might provide some context. It is a few years old but should still be somewhat relevant to the discussion.
https://www.oilsandsmagazine.com/market-insights/crude-oil-pricing-differentials-why-alberta-crude-sells-at-deep-discount-to-wti
60% of crude oil imported into the US comes from Canada, and at a heavily discounted price, too. Sure, levy a 100% tariff on Canadian oil and watch the price of gas at the pumps go through the roof. Not a very smart idea in my opinion.
Trump in essence, forced the resignation of Trudeau, the idiot king.
There is a potential general election looming in Canada in April and it looks like the Liberal Party will choose staunch WEF member Mark Carney, as their leader. He is 100 times worse than Trudeau in his climate change and globalist ideology.
The Liberal Party is now using anti-Trump rhetoric and a looming US-Canada trade war as their election campaign platform. If Trump were smart, he would have held off until after the Canadian election in which the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Polievre, stands a strong chance of winning that election.
A Conservative Prime Minister in Canada working co-operatively with Trump in the US, would make a decent North American partnership and one where problems such as illegals and fentanyl would get immediately dealt with.
PP is a RINO, I can see it clearly, from my porch in NW Az.
Therefore, he is no better than any of the blatant leftists.
Once you know the signs, its obvious; I looked at him for maybe 5 minutes, back during the Freedom Convoy, and recognised him for what he is.
Pretty harsh, Dutch… going to give him a chance to prove you right or wrong?
It’s a fair observation, he was all in on the Covid tyranny and I don’t recall hearing much from him during the trucker protests. Still, he has to be an improvement over Justine.
reason to support 100% tariffs on all import products. This will force the reindustrialization we need.
I think this is true, but incomplete. The deindustrialization was deliberate — using federal regulation and financial & economic policy to force economic power out of the hands of smaller businesses into the hands of the big monopolies and multinationals, and to force political power out of the hands of small governments and individuals into the grip of Leviathan.
Without rolling that back, any reindustrialization will just be run by these two groups of monopolists, making the American economy even more inefficient and corrupt. Despite some of the comments here that all American property should be owned solely by Americans, I trust those folks understand that having the United States run by Americans such as Barack Obama and Bill Gates would be a terrible idea.
Similarly, I may disagree with Trump on one thing: his public statements (on the reserve currency, on trade, on “defense”, etc.) suggest that he thinks of other countries as vassals which should be forced to pay for bad American policies. I hope this is just a negotiating tactic and he means to change the policies (there is also evidence for that).
If not, not only will those policies and their terrible effects become worse, but the opinion of America in the rest of the world will join that of their fellow totalitarians in China.
I like the President’s friends! Glad they’re on our side.
No one needs to get hurt. Do what President Trump is asking and his friends will retreat to a neutral corner as long as Canada and Mexico follow the new rules.
Opiate addiction will not decrease nor increase based on supply. Never has, never will.
Opiate addiction is 99.99% based on demand. Always has been. Always will be.
If Mexico and China and Afghanistan disappeared tomorrow, the opiate addiction problems in America would not change — because demand for opiate drugs won’t change. Alternative sources will emerge, and quickly.
Does that square with China’s recovery from the opium wars?
China has absolute Control. America does not, and ‘Stupid is as Stupid does’. Example: Smoking is STILL a ‘cool’ thing to do, even in the face of its terrible harms. I think Mufasa is correct, because far too many people are stupid with a capital ‘S’, and the ‘demand’ is there.
Consumption of all kinds of addictive drugs – opiates, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, meth etc. are highly price-elastic.
The higher the price the less consumption. The lower the price the more consumption.
Most people who consume these drugs are not hard-core addicts. Most people just dabble recreationally and price is a big factor. For the true hard-core addicts they will try to get their drug no matter what, but even they will be involuntarily cut off if they cannot find it in the marketplace.
“Price” also includes non-monetary costs: factors like legal risk, ease of finding a supply, quality/safety of product.
This is why well-intentioned programs like “safe injection sites” or needle-exchanges or legalization always lead to greatly increased drug consumption because they make casual users more likely to use more often.
Our President, Our America! God Bless DJT… Make America Great Again!
Why would Donald Trump just take a hammer to the country who is their largest export market. Yes Canada. Why? I have yet to hear any explanation as to why. Please don’t insult me with this being about fentanyl coming from Canada. There is 200 times more fentanyl coming from Mexico than Canada and there are no Mexican cartels. In November, Canadian law enforcement dismantled the country’s largest fentanyl lab to date in British Columbia, which had connections to Mexican drug cartels. Now it’s the 100 small gangs making it for the Canadian market. His constant comment about a $200 billion deficit with Canada is simply not true. Why does he keep saying that and why does no one challenge him. Are they scared?. Canada just got lumped in with the murdering butchers who run China and the Cartels who run Mexico, why?
Last item. Canada does not pay these tariffs, the imported does and they are passed on to the end buyer
So many don’t seem to understand that the tariffs are paid by the end buyer. Having said that, tariffs (because of the increased cost) tend to reduce sales of the tariffed item and so that will ultimately hurt the Canadian export economy. What I have a hard time to understand is that I thought that the USMCA was a beautiful treaty.
That is the theory. But it can also depend on the seller/buyer relationship and any long term contracts in place. the changes won’t happen over night and the border crossings and customs clearance could be a nightmare for a while. Donald negotiated the USMCA so yes it must be a beautiful treaty. There is a clause to renegotiate so he didn’t need to go the tariff route. I suspect he is after something else
Tariffs are paid by whoever needs the transaction the most.
If there are many suppliers competing to sell to only one buyer, the supplier pays the tariff.
If there are many buyers competing to get product from only one supplier, the buyer pays the tariff.
Most things the US buys can be sourced from multiple substitute countries or domestically. If Canadian oil becomes more expensive the US can drill more, or buy from Nigeria or Saudi, or Mexico or dozens of other countries. If Canadian forest products become more expensive, the US can produce domestically or buy from Brazil or Sweden or Indonesia.
The US is the largest market in the world and its consumption of goods cannot be easily made up by selling a bit more elsewhere. There is no substitute for the US market. Suppliers cannot replace US market demand by selling more to Africa or Latin America because the buying power is just not comparable. Suppliers must either eat the cost of the tariff or radically downsize, lose economies of scale, lose their skilled workforce, lose their market position.
How much does Canada spent on military (defence)?
If America were not having Canada under our defensive shield, how much would it have to spend, to defend itself?
When calculating how much Canada is screwing us, you really have to take this into account.
ok come on . You calculate how much Canada is screwing you and send us the bill. I absolutely agree with you Canada should be spending much more on our military but our country has been run by a bunch of socialist environmentalists for the past 9 years. Hopefully that will change in March or April
The biggest problem with Canada is there a too many “Canadians”
Tariffs , let’s see here ;
Suddenly Canadian maple syrup ( just an simple example ) is priced at $20 / quart.
Vermont Maple syrup is still $10 / quart.
Canada really has nothing that we need, or can find an alternative for.
I like the many Canadians that I have interacted with, however.
“why don’t they challenge him?” you seem to be refuting your own post to me – it is hard to refute the real #s – and as to who pays the tariffs – your memory is very short on Trump’s tariffs in the past
“…the demand for allies to shut down their support for fentanyl distribution.”
This was a big issue in 2016.
Both Clinton and Trump pledged to help if elected; Trump worked on helping but was unable to achieve the lasting results he wanted due to the cheating which resulted in Obama’s third term.
He’s really going to go afte this now.
One might be so presumptuous to ask how well can Canada and Mexico control their borders if we, a much richer country, and one with a $900 billion per year military, can’t control ours ?
Having a big budget is great, having the will to take action is better.
Good point, and one Trump has obviously not considered. The US southern border is a sieve. 20-30 million illegals have just walked right in costing the US government billions and billions in housing costs, health care, education etc. The number of illegals crossing from Canada into the US is miniscule in comparison.
Expecting Canada to achieve what the US, nor President Trump himself has ever achieved, is a pretty high and mighty expectation.
I agree that Canada has to do its part, but imposing a 25% tariff as punishment for something the US has never done in its 250 year history, is beyond the pale and hypocritical on President Trump’s part.
Agree 100%. I hope Canadians get a wake up call. We are lazy and have been dependent on the US for too long. We need to clean up our own internal mess.
I think the idea is to have our neighbors help control the border. We can only do so much from the US side.
The National Security (Fentanyl) tariffs are to change behavior.
I can see Canada and Mexico, after some intiial bluster,, caving to PDJT’s demands,…China I am more doubtful…
Oh How I’ve missed those wolverines the last four years!
Voted for Trump and support him, but am I alone on wondering why Trump set a daily deportation quota of only 1800? I mean, I get it if such is because of current staff and funding levels of ICE, but how much of a dent does that really make (even with self-deportations)? 18,000/day would seem more proportionate to the likely number of illegals in the country, no? Is it just a matter of “just getting started” and it will be ramped up later (which would require Congress to approve higher expenditures)?? Or is his goal to just remove the most dangerous of the illegal immigrant population and then try to do some sort of Amnesty bill for the rest? Or is he assuming that Vance wins in 2028 and thus this process will continue in the next administration?
I just want to say that I am so tired of the media trying to shape public opinion and policy, instead of doing what they’re supposed to be doing…reporting the news. They spend all their efforts trying to convince everyone how horrible President Trump’s economic plans will be. In their typical predictable playbook, they drag out far left economists to tell us the world will come to an end if we tariff other countries. We can’t have tariffs, they will increase inflation, costs will go up. Suddenly, they’re deeply concerned about prices, after telling us for the last 4 years that there was no inflation. We were simply imagining it.
Do anything to shake up the status quo, and these people screech like hyenas. I never saw a more pathetic bunch of people who are so petrified to try something new. Newsflash for you, our trade with China has done far more to hurt and weaken us than it will ever do to improve our country. It’s what you call the high cost of a low price. Maybe it’s not a great idea to be reliant on a country that is our absolute nemesis. One who sabotages us, steals from us, and undercuts our industry with slave labor. Oh, but it’s a “global economy,” we have to trade with China.
I’m a millennial, so I didn’t get to shop in the 40-80s, but I certainly would have loved the chance to buy 100% American made products at a department store. How anyone could be against manufacturing here (and spending a bit more to support US jobs), I’ll never know. And yet, the media is going to be nonstop with news and articles about how the tariffs are crashing our economy, and we must import cheap junk to save ourselves. It’s like their rooting for our demise. All I can do is keep my TV turned off!
China sends all the precursors for fentanyl to Mexico/Canada and builds warehouses for Chinese citizens to make pills and then distribute it into USA. Mexico could shut it down now but they won’t. I’m fine with the tariffs until Mexico stops the garbage they are sending our way. Since 20th lots of vehicles going south loaded with family & belongings heading to the southern border. I’m liking it from this angle.
I’m late to the party here and maybe this is answered by others elsewhere. What will be the definition of “goods”?
One fuzzy area is electricity. Canada sells hydro-generated electricity to US customers.
Rivers are another fuzzy area. For example the Columbia originates in Canada but then passes into the US on the way to the Pacific. The hydro plants along the way are just part of the value of the water that flows. Timing of releases can change the value of the water for the specific subsets of users along the route. Timing of hydropower is relevant wrt demand for production, irrigation water is timing relevant, salmon runs, etc.
I’m wondering if there’s been any discussion about those sorts of “goods”. Are they goods, resources, services or something else?
Likewise intellectual property may be fertile ground for discussion. Is there to be a tariff on that? Let’s say that a movie is filmed in Canada or even just owned by a Canadian person (natural or otherwise). Is that a “good”? Are royalties on that movie when shown in the US then subject to the tariffs?
America will never solve its drug problem with Tariffs. America’s drug problem is internal. Yes drugs flow over our borders from other countries unchecked. Why? Because there is a huge demand.
I have lived for over 50 years with “The War on Drugs” Including President Trump’s first term.
All that money spent for all that time has netted little results. Just one drug crisis after the next.
We need to deal with the problem at home and stop blaming others. America needs to shoulder its blame and do what needs to be done in our country.
Yes seal the borders North, South, East, and West, It must be made difficult to get drugs into our country.
Make drug trafficking and selling as serious of crime as murder.
Build more prisons.
Lock up dealers for a long time until they are old. No release after a short jail time.
No 3 strikes, No slap on the wrist.
Hard long jail time for First offense.
Dont deport non citizens convicted for drug charges. They will just find a way back with a load of drugs. Throw them in a crap hole jail and keep them there.
Other countries that take hard drugs seriously dont have the horrible problems we do. Because they don’t tolerate drug dealers. They have harsh sentences for drug dealers. Some even chop their heads off. ( Not a bad idea)
Its time to get serious about hard drugs and quit letting drug dealers go back into society.
Tariff will do no good. Our problem is internal. Its just too easy to be a criminal here in the US. Until we solve the problem internally here in America First. The drugs will keep flowing. There is too much money to be made.
Cut off the supply at our borders. Jail the traffickers and dealers. Make drugs on the street expensive and hard to find. The addiction problem will take care of itself.
Like others expressing your view, you misunderstand the point of the tariffs. The tariffs are not intended to get Canada and Mexico or any other outside nation to solve the drug addiction issues of Americans. They are simply designed to compel certain border enforcement actions out of those nations that are very simple, normal, rational and courteous which they have been encouraged to cease carrying on by the former administration. You forget. Donald Trump followed up a Democrat open border regime previously. Give him some credit for knowing what’s going on, and what needs to be done to get the border shut down as he did before. Mexico and Canada cannot call themselves our friends and partners if they don’t show respectful concern for the health and welfare of our citizens.
I don’t know if this has been posted yet, but both Americans and Canadians might find
this interesting.

Happy Tariff Day!
Agree, Betsy, that the discussions here are a cut above. However, I have also observed that if you ever question anything (especially a Sundance opinion) too much, you are shut down in a not-so-respectful way.
Pump the brakes a little on Lutnick. I’ve seen a few stories that place him right at the heart of the threat to the US economy. Lutnick is the US face of a new venture that would clear U.S. treasury futures at a London clearing house which is overseen, and controlled, by the Bank of England. Zerohedge mentioned the story a few days back. Most interesting. https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2025-01-21/people-vs-banks-its-getting-real
