re. apparel lasting 20 years:
A couple little neighborhood girls, ages 6 and 7 came over to the house to visit. Their mom is a 2nd hand store shopper, exclusively.
One of them had on a dress style that looked exactly like the ones I wore as a 6 YO back in the early 60’s. The material felt exactly the same. Nice heavy, thick, soft (not scratchy) cotton. Beautiful dress that you could *never* find today (outside of an old closet or 2nd hand store). I don’t think they even make cotton like that anymore.
So that was a 60 YO dress that looked and felt like new!
Sunny – Beside auto and machinery manufacturers, etc, returning to the US, I would like to see clothing manufacturers return. As far as I am concerned, cotton and its derivatives was the best (oh where or where have our fields gone!). Now we are stuck with nylon/polyester fabric that stretches out over time and causes sweat, esp. underclothes.
I remember some of the shoes and other items that used to be made in the Northeast.
The C. F. Hathaway company based out of Waterville Maine, 1853 – 2003. Known initially for dress shirts and uniforms.
Dexter (shoe company), lives only on in a limited product line wholly owned by a larger conglomerate.
New Balance cannot even qualify for the made in America label in their factories they have in Maine with the imported components they use to stay in business and somewhat competitive in the market.
Ditto the surviving Maine papermills.
Those are just a few examples I can think of, there were so many businesses and industries done in by cheap imports.

I love LLBean but most of their clothing is made elsewhere. We can grow the cotton but the bales are sent to China to be combed, spun, and woven into cloth and then sewn into clothes. India also has mills and factories so maybe it isn’t all in China.
My husband and I use our Bean mocs all the time. Wouldn’t be without them. Good for wet weather.

The property apparently was sold for commercial or housing redevelopment, or so I was hearing.

Brown Shoe had plants all over Missouri. Brick Buildings in the Middle of Towns. Hundreds of them.
All hollowed out. Many of the industrial parks that were built have mostly empty buildings. MAGA . Bring them all back.

Treepers familiar with Algozzini Hawaiian Shop in Hobe Sound, FL (est. 1947, 3 generations of family ownership, now permanently closed) will remember this fun place to visit back in the day. They were the largest retailer of real Hawaiian apparel in the state. Specializing in Hawaiian shirts and sundresses. I have lots of cousins in Hawaii, my wife and I honeymooned there back in ’70, and we wore those clothes for years. They helped get you in a party mood quickly. Wife still has some of the colorful mu-mus. All were authentic Hawaiian, not third world stuff you see today. Miss that store and the Algozzini family.
What a beautiful memory.
I collected vintage mu’u-mu’us and shirts for 2 decades, and wore them with much gratitude when visiting the islands during the years hubby was working and paddling there. The locals loved them and I always got special treatment on Hawaiian Airlines. It’s how I learned the word and meaning of ohana.

In the basement of the D&L Store downtown, the whole floor was covered with bolts of cloth. Then there was a huge “Pattern” section.
So “dress shopping” meant you’d go down there and choose your fabric and pattern and then….Voila! Mom would sew it up!
The fact that we got hand-me- downs from a family of 4 girls tells you something about the quality of that clothing.
By the time it had worked it;’s way thru my family , it had passed thru 8 kids! And still great enough to hand along to the next person.
No way you could find a kids dress these days that could handle that.
My kiwi cousin showed me his merino wool sweater…far better quality than what is available here. And the wool is far softer.

If I remember right, the softest wool is from the first shearing of the sheep and not from successive shearings.

I have a fleet of cotton tops from the Gap that I bought about 40 years ago. They show little wear, feel great, and have fabric many times more substantial than the junk around today.
I am still using a 33 year old Pepperidge Farm percale sheet set every summer. No wear except for the elastic and whether they are line dried or dryer dried come out wrinkle free and crisp. I stopped sewing because the fabrics being sold were not worth the effort I put into it.
Appliances…companies put out of business. Sears Roebuck.
My fridge, a solid Kenmore, 29 years old before it died.
