The desired economic benefit from creating a block of countries with the purchasing power to be closer to the US and China in size never materialized, because they were never able to homogenize fiscal policy, they diluted the composite capabilities of their citizenry by importing the third world, and they went left politically. Socialism fails no matter what size you scale up to. Add to that the different national identities of their member countries and the collapse of the EU was inevitable.
I wrote a paper on this prospectively when I got my MBA in 1991, and other than the mass immigration, was pretty accurate with my predictions. They Balkanized the European union with the simple act of trying to stich together 20 disparate countries. This was the idea of the globalists to consolidate and create an institution that gave them mechanisms to control those disparate countries with fewer levers and a singular path, but like all leftists, they failed to account for human nature – the instinct most of us have to resist being controlled.
The EU is a great success if you are Uncle Sam and you want to control all of Eurooe.

I studied this in international finance in the 80s in grad school – economics – at Univ of Chicago. Breaking it down into specifics: certain countries like Greece have an appetite for debt and spending which other countries like Germany did not. Those differences in saving/spending habits pre-existed the attempts to create the EU and survived it. No amount of paper on top can change the habits and cultural practice of the people below. Those differences continually surfaced — often with pissed off Germans angry to foot the bill for multiple bailouts. There was a narrow band of difference – perhaps 2% – which someone had to cover. Northern European countries always got stuck with the bill. Fast forward to MAggie Thatcher showing up and demanding “we want our money back” !
