The police have arrested Luigi Mangione, 26, in Pennsylvania for the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson.
Apparently, Mangione still had the handgun and multiple items of physical evidence connecting him to the assassination.
(Reuters) -Authorities have arrested the man suspected of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson in a brazen shooting outside a Manhattan hotel last week, New York City officials said on Monday, ending a massive five-day manhunt.
The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was spotted eating at a McDonald’s by an employee of the fast food restaurant who believed he resembled the gunman, officials said at a news conference.
Mangione was found with a “ghost gun” – a firearm assembled from parts, making it untraceable – and a silencer consistent with the weapon used to shoot Thompson, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, as well as clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the killer. The ghost gun may have been produced by a 3D printer, said Joseph Kenny, the NYPD’s chief of detectives.
Mangione, a Maryland native, had multiple fraudulent identifications, including a fake New Jersey ID that matched the one used by the gunman to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting, officials said.
Police also found a handwritten document that speaks to “both his motivation and his mindset,” Tisch said. While the document did not mention specific targets, Mangione harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny added.
Mangione graduated from a private all-boys school in Baltimore as valedictorian in 2016 before earning dual engineering degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, according to media reports, social media posts and school records. His last known address was in Honolulu, officials said. (read more)

I also didn’t like that the author (J. Childers) said Penny “killed” Neely (he died of a drug overdose under care of the medics, NOT from or during the hold with Penny), but the article makes an interesting contrast in the cases of the two deaths.
I would argue that Childers is often very worth the read. And I can cut him a tiny bit of slack here. Yes, he died AFTER Penny released him, and after he was under the care of medics. However, it is probably reasonable to conclude that this death would not have occurred had Penney not intervened. Don’t get me wrong. Penny would have been fully justified in killing this man (as Childers argues from a prior similar case).
He looked pretty good for someone on the run for that long, suffering from mental illness or chronic pain or addiction or whatever.

Aha! He had back surgery for chronic pain. Often these surgeries don’t turn out well, sometimes people are worse off afterwards. It appears Luigi was such a case. Friends and family report he really spiraled out of control after the surgery.
Lots of evidence supporting the idea that these back surgeries help no one, are very expensive scams, much like Cancer treatment.
Include in the “pain management clinics” that have sprung up due to Federal restrictions on opiods, carried out in an attempt to address a crises THEY created, bottom line is the whole Healthcare industry SUCKS, every aspect of it.

Medicare is extremely slow on reimbursing the individual consumer, if I am not mistaken. That was my mother’s experience 17 years ago.
I wonder if the ‘denials’ are a form of ‘delay’ and ‘defend’… along the realms of ‘creative accounting’ and business financial quarters or billing cycles? Buying the business office ‘time’ to evaluate income and outflow and how to direct current financial resources?

Twenty years ago, patients were bringing in their medications for the nurse to inventory, in the hospital during an admission, and document ‘home medications’. Then or now, no one had time for that BS.
The short version…I had a patient being followed by an inner city huge conglomerate type teaching facility.. that catered to the needy and poor. My patient’s medications were brought in 6 walmart type grocery bags…multiple bottles of full and half full heart, blood pressure, anti psychotic and anti depressives along with diuretics and potassium supplements and vitamins. Well over 100 pill bottles…(the nurse was supposed to count the pills, BTW).
It was obvious by the dates, the patient was not taking her meds (only 2 or 3 missing from each bottle). There were duplicates within the same month…generic versus name brands of new on the market meds. Back then, I conservatively guess, the value of said medications that I had in my hands, exceeded $250K.
Her family was supposedly “involved” with her care (involved when the public aid check came?). But no one noticed she was not taking her meds.
Oh…a neighbor did a CPD wellness check after not seeing her for a week or so, that is how I had contact with the patient in the ICU…they found her ‘down’, EMs etc, brought to hospital where she later died from a stroke. She was 40-ish. A needless death. Which left me with more questions…like if she had been taking those BP pills…or not…her BP would have given hints. And they were missed or ignored.

Most of these issues can be laid at the feet of the legislators or regulators who deem such “laws/regulations” necessary to safeguard the patient’s well being but is almost always carried to the illogical extreme. Insurance companies are less worried about the insured’s welfare than they are about their premiums and saving costs to themselves. The monies paid by said insurance companies to said legislators for re-election and to pass favorable laws/regulations are representative of the some of the worst aspects of lobbying.
Healthcare only became more expensive and more complicated and its goals of serving the patient’s welfare more compromised when these two entities got involved.
Medicare Part A is total crap.
Part B is a lifesaver but you must budget to pay for it and do research to find a good company.
Funny, my experience is just the opposite. I have part A only, recently used it, have no part B, opted out years ago and have no insurance.
So far am doing pretty well, given I have had to navigate the vagaries of the f*cked up “healthcare system” in order to get the MEDICAL care I want and need.
It’s good until you have something like needing ongoing care for an extended time ….then they both drop you after a few months and tell you to qualify for medicaid. My Father fell and broke his neck….wouldn’t even give him needed physical therapy to try and get some use of limbs back. All he got was a huge bed sore that became very serious. When time had run out on both Insurances …like six months…wouldn’t even pay for his oxygen…. Hello medicaid…bye bye home (lien) savings…that is if you continue to live long enough after the poor care.

I became infuriated with how easy it is to get on Medicaid. The government really WANTS more people on the rolls. I am well off enough to have retired early. I was self-paying my entire insurance premiums until my old company of 32 years was bought and canceled retirees from their group plan. I had to go shop for insurance on the Obamacare website.
I have a very odd retirement setup. I get paid once per year. When filling out all the financials on the website, they wanted my income for the prior month (which happened to be literally $200 of interest income). It mentioned that if I had sporadic income, I would be able to input my estimated annual income, and this I did. I entered completely truthful numbers throughout.
The result was: YOU DO NOT QUALIFY for ANY plans. You DO qualify for MEDICAID. And to make matters unbelievably worse, I WAS AUTOMATICALLY ENROLLED IN MEDICAID, and I was unable to continue shopping and browsing the plans on the website. I was required to contact my state Medicaid office to provide me with a cancellation letter, which I then had to send to the Obamacare site so they could unlock things to allow me to shop the prices. This took about two full days of effort on my part to finally accomplish.
On top of this, we were later informed by our school that my son automatically qualified for the reduced school lunch program. If you saw how much income I have and that I was automatically enrolled for this, your blood would boil. The US Government doesn’t need to be anywhere near healthcare.
My dad had the United Healthcare Medicare supplement. He was never denied any service or medical procedure in the 20 or so years he had them
I think the issue is probably Medicare Advantage / HMO plans. Here UnitedHealthcare seems to be a big player in Medicaid (called Med-Quest here) as an HMO plan. Not much in Medicare and about zero in employer plans.

Perhaps. I’m not sure the eyebrow gap is as conclusive as some do. From different angles and with different light, thinner areas of hair can pretty well disappear. It is a big question to be answered and raises a LOT of suspicion, but I think the chin, nose, and roundness features are more discriminatory (which also raise suspicion).

People seem to forget the sole and singular purpose of insurance: to hedge risk and costs (replacement or services) associated with large losses that the insured typically can’t pay on their own. So, thus, you buy insurance to hedge the loss. You pay into a pool that collects interest (the money maker for the insurers rather than the premiums) so that one day when needed you can pay for that expensive thing, well, as long as it meets the criteria of the policy you agreed to with the insurer.
So, ask yourself, why medical insurance is involved with everything if insurance is only to hedge large losses? Why are they involved in everything? Because medical insurance is not truly insurance it’s a Ponzi scheme set up by both government and rich people masquerading as “insurance.”
Insurance is vital. Medical insurance as it’s set up through the current legal structure is not insurance…..it’s just not.
And, regardless, it doesn’t give carte blanche approval for someone to kill over it.

Amen. Big insurance has conditioned people to think it should pay for every $4 medical expense. Yet, today’s health insurance is completely upside down with perverse incentives that drive medical costs way up. The truth of the matter is that medical providers now see the insurance company as their customer. They no longer view us as the customer, because we no longer make decisions on what we are willing to purchase.
I decided to walk away from it. I now use CrowdHealth and pay roughly $550 per month for a family of 4. I really like its structure. All their employees and administration is paid for by a per-person fee of about $50. All other money coming in is 100% shared with other members to pay bills. There is Zero incentive for these sharing costs to increase, and there appears to be 100% transparency with how much “overhead” I’m paying for. There are other sharing companies out there (CHM, Sedera, Medi-Share, Samaritan Ministries). Note that there are a few states where “being uninsured” is not allowed without a tax penalty.
I can’t get a cashier to acknowledge me at MacDonald’s to take my order, but now they are suddenly identifying criminal suspects that the local authorities and FBI can’t seem to locate?

No one will read this because the post is several days old, but it seems that Fox News is going to great lengths to squelch any momentum of outrage towards the health insurance companies, large hospital systems, pharmaceuticals that are not only robbing American citizens blind of their healthcare management, but interfering with health care to set degree that lives are being lost, healthcare is being denied, and the following is being done to millions of Americans.
As DOGE takes effect, as RFK Jr is tasked with health care reform, the medical industrial complex needs to be at the center of the target for one of the primary targets do not tell me that healthcare executives are not trying to influence how the news is presented.
