The police have arrested Luigi Mangione, 26, in Pennsylvania for the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson.
Apparently, Mangione still had the handgun and multiple items of physical evidence connecting him to the assassination.
(Reuters) -Authorities have arrested the man suspected of killing UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson in a brazen shooting outside a Manhattan hotel last week, New York City officials said on Monday, ending a massive five-day manhunt.
The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was spotted eating at a McDonald’s by an employee of the fast food restaurant who believed he resembled the gunman, officials said at a news conference.
Mangione was found with a “ghost gun” – a firearm assembled from parts, making it untraceable – and a silencer consistent with the weapon used to shoot Thompson, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, as well as clothing and a mask similar to those worn by the killer. The ghost gun may have been produced by a 3D printer, said Joseph Kenny, the NYPD’s chief of detectives.
Mangione, a Maryland native, had multiple fraudulent identifications, including a fake New Jersey ID that matched the one used by the gunman to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting, officials said.
Police also found a handwritten document that speaks to “both his motivation and his mindset,” Tisch said. While the document did not mention specific targets, Mangione harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” Kenny added.
Mangione graduated from a private all-boys school in Baltimore as valedictorian in 2016 before earning dual engineering degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, according to media reports, social media posts and school records. His last known address was in Honolulu, officials said. (read more)

Hawaii friends of Luigi Mangione … recall him as a natural leader who led a book club where members would share ideas while watching sunsets from a place called Magic Island.
“He was just such a thoughtful and deeply compassionate person at everything he did,” said Jackie Wexler, a food technologist in New York. She used to live with Mangione at Surfbreak, a co-living space near Honolulu’s Ala Moana Beach Park.
Mangione, 26, suffered chronic back pain from an apparent pinched nerve, said R.J. Martin, Surfbreak’s founder. His friends stopped hearing from him this summer.
He said he was stunned by Mangione’s arrest. “I loved this guy,” said Martin. “In some ways I feel like my members are my kids.”
Wexler had attended the University of Pennsylvania with Mangione, she says, but didn’t become friends with him until they were both living on Oahu at Surfbreak. Originally envisioned as long-term housing for graduate students, Surfbreak morphed into a sort of adult dorm for, as its website, says, “adventurers, remote workers, and mindful travelers united by shared life in our co-living + coworking spaces.”
Mangione was committed to personal development through reading and working out. He got around Oahu by bicycle, and even after he moved out of Surfbreak he would walk with Wexler from Magic Island to Surfbreak, located in the penthouse of a building near the Hawaii Convention Center.
Mangione was often in pain from a back problem, Martin said, although the two would still rock climb together at HiClimb, a gym in Kakaʻako near Surfbreak.
Martin recalled the problem, which had lingered for years, was a misaligned vertebrae that would pinch Mangione’s spinal cord.
Martin did not recall the exact dates Mangione lived at Surfbreak but says they stayed in regular contact after Manione left. Martin said Mangione later texted him pictures after getting back surgery.
“He went radio silent in June or July,” Martin said.

Hawaii News Now has confirmed the 26-year-old lived in a rental unit in Kakaako.
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow/AP) – A suspect arrested Monday in the brazen Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO previously lived in Hawaii.
The suspect, identified by police as 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione, was captured after a quick-thinking McDonald’s employee in Pennsylvania alerted authorities to a customer who was found with a weapon, mask and writings linking him to the ambush.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione’s last known address was in Honolulu, and Hawaii News Now has confirmed the 26-year-old lived in a rental unit at 801 South St. in Kakaako, but it’s unclear at this point when he left Hawaii.
Hawaii News Now has also confirmed that Mangione was a member of Hub Coworking Hawaii, a coworking space on Queen Street.
Court records reveal that Mangione received a citation last November for hiking within a closed area on the southeast slope of the Nuuanu Pali lookout.
He pleaded no contest to trespassing and paid a $100 fine.

A second, unused tool could still be found in possession – which may not match ballistic ( expended bullet scratches etc) testing.
The unexpended shells could also have been tossed.

Of course this guy had the requisite “manifesto”. It all smacks of “there’s more to this story”.

Why was he on bus from Atlanta? Had he flown there from Hawaii?
Also, who was he on phone with right before shooting Thompson apprx 6:45am? Is there accomplice or handler?
