In the Reuters report you have to understand the difference in Russian cultural language to appreciate what President Vladimir Putin means when he says, “[Trump] behaved, in my opinion, in a very correct way, courageously, like a real man.”
Russians speak in very blunt terms when the behavior of men and women are evaluated. It sounds odd through a politically correct western filter, but Putin was just praising the ‘honesty’ and ‘strength’ of President Trump.
[Example: A Russian woman describing her husband would say to another Russian, “he is my best man.”]
The bottom-line indication from President Putin is that he welcomes the change in geopolitical dynamic that a pragmatic, honest and strong man brings to the table. Putin respects Trump. The baseline for a negotiated peace deal exists.

Trump said during campaigning that he could bring peace in Ukraine within 24 hours if elected, but has given few details on how he would seek to end the biggest land war in Europe since World War Two.
The 72-year-old Kremlin chief gave just one note of caution: “I do not know what is going to happen now. I have no clue.”
When pressed by a questioner what he would do if Trump called to suggest a meeting, Putin said he was ready to resume contacts if a Trump administration wanted that, and was ready for discussions with Trump. (more)

This entire war exists because nobody on the planet can take anything Washington says at face value. Minsk Agreement? Yeah, that was a ruse. Merkel admitted it was to stall Russia while the West armed Ukraine.
The best possible outcome for Trump at this point is to get the US out of Ukraine, allow their Army to collapse (no funding, no “contractors”, no intel sharing), and in exchange for this Putin agrees to some mild concessions about refugees, humanitarian assistance, and post-war reconstruction.
I think we almost need to approach Ukraine like the aftermath of “Hurricane Neocon”. If the fighting can be stopped, there’s an opportunity for both the US and Russia to say, “We need to help Ukraine recover from one of the worst natural disasters in world history: the Biden Administration.” Nobody in America voted for the war in Ukraine. An administrative restructuring is underway at Soros Fund Management, founded by billionaire George Soros in the 1970s, as it plans to shutter its Hong Kong office, according to a Bloomberg report.

Trump isn’t going to put US troops in there. Europe already wants an exit. The recent election in the US is a complete repudiation of Project Ukraine. Trump (wisely) gave himself no out to back down later or ramp up military engagement. He promised 24-hours. He promised to end the bloodshed and risk of WW3. That’s what he will do. Trump has integrity and Ukraine has caused us enough problems.
If Putin doesn’t agree to a peace deal, he’ll get ALL of Ukraine, a collapsed army, Zelensky will be deposed, and Putin will have a full Russian client state that is both neutral and neutralized. The Donbas will be reintegrated into Russia in some fashion or remain a “semi-autonomous” region.
None of this reality is Trump’s fault. It is the hand he has been dealt by incompetent Washington. That’s why we’ll see a lot of effort to push Trump to increase funding and weaponry in Ukraine to “drive Putin to the bargaining table”. But Trump cannot do that because it would massively extend the war and death.

Pragmatically, if I were Russia, knowing that Ukraine is unraveling, I would not agree to any deal. Russia is in a position of strength and knows the US cannot stomach a military confrontation.
