• The infamous super delegates, deep DNC insiders, will not be allowed to vote on 1st ballot. This point is moot because no one is going to win on the first ballot.
• Kamala Harris is planning her convention strategy around a full ticket proposal. Harris is vetting at least four possible running mates, including Andy Beshear and possibly Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.

The DNC controls the mechanisms. The first-round ballot will include too many names for any single candidate to emerge the victor. The super delegates, the ones who really are the party power brokers, will then make their decisions.

56 years ago, March 1968, Lyndon Johnson announced he would not seek re-election. The reason he provided was that he needed to devote as much time as possible to healing what he saw as a divided country. A division caused by the war in Vietnam. A country, he claims, he served for many, many, many years, first as a congressman ending up as president. And a country he claims he loved so much. It was a very good speech and received well by the public.
The similarities between 1968 and today are clearly there. Except that Johnson was very alert and showed no signs of dementia. No one was trying to oust Johnson from office because he expressed himself in incoherent gibberish.
If, in fact, Biden is going to announce he will not seek re-election, then, in preparation, he is very likely watching the video of the Johnson TV speech. I think he will use similar, if not the same reasons as Johnson. He will attempt to convey that the reason he’s not seeking re-election is to put all his effort into healing a divided country, a country he served for a long, long, long time and loves so much. He will, in my opinion, lay that on pretty thick. And in that way, hope that everyone will then forget that debate which revealed him as a babbling numbskull.
