A few days ago, I wrote an allegory, “Rise Up Old Mules“, with the full intention of reviewing comments and following up the next day to see if people still held the knowledge of coded writing. [Idalia delayed my review]
An allegory is a literary work that makes extensive use of symbolism in order to communicate a broader moral or meaning. Nearly every aspect of an allegory—from characters, to objects, to dialogue, to settings, to major plot events—can typically be interpreted as having a secondary, symbolic meaning that fits into the allegory’s broader meaning.
In the writing of our forefathers, and even many writings long before and a few still today, allegories were/are used to convey messages publicly that are interpreted with a silent understanding. They were/are essentially coded messages from rebels, insurgent dissidents, in various societies who were working within the boundaries of government review.
You may have vague reference points from similar formats of communication that took place in various prisoner of war camps.
How do POWs communicate when their captors are constantly monitoring their activity? The never spoken language of POW’s in a prison camp has a similar allegorical communication style.
The best allegories communicate from a factual reference point about subject matter, but then weave the current context or power conflict within it so as not to attract the understanding of censors, monitors or those in power who seek to stop any form of communication that is against the interests of the oppressive regime.
It is a communication style lost over time as successive generations no longer taught or had need for the skillset to understand the implied message. However, in this modern era where six corporations control all media; where there is direct collaboration between the government censors and social media platforms over content; where arbiters of acceptable speech under the auspices of “disinformation review panels” are now deployed using both human review and automated intelligence; it is worthwhile revisiting the old ways to understand a method of discussing rebellion in public.
There is one big benefit to the deployment of AI search spiders crawling all over the internet to analyze and identify subversive speech. AI cannot detect allegorical writing patterns, it never will. Current AI sweeps, crawls and searches are based on human inputs to create the pattern context the AI is launched to discover.
Y’all know, I test weird stuff in the tech communication space just to probe how effective the new mechanics are, and create strategies around their constructs. Allegorical writing was designed to communicate subversive information in the sunlight of public presentation. Historically, human censors could not see the implied meaning in allegorical communication, and the content itself – if correctly structured – carries an inherent deniability.
From my review, about half (+/-) CTH readers understood the implied meaning, about half did not. Approximately 10% were absolutely clueless, and a few even found the inverse meaning within the story.
Approximately half of the CTH audience picking up the implications within an allegory is much better than I expected, much better. This is an interesting outcome, although given the high intelligence and specific demographics of the CTH family it makes sense.
My point is this: teach your friends and family, especially the younger family members, how to understand coded public messaging and what context frames the cornerstone of how it is delivered.
The old ways are going to be important if a few strategically placed voices are going to be forced to mount a successful counterinsurgency against an entire UniParty system, that aligns with an oppressive regime.
Mules = soldiers.
Exceptional Mules = special forces.
Collars = rifles.
The silent wise men at auction = leadership (think founding fathers).
The fields = the battles.
The farmers = YOU!

Our problems with the communists may be short lived – it seems to me they’ll be offing themselves before they can do much more damage. This seems the inevitable solution because their cartel bureaucracy has paralyzed the functions of the Republic and they have no function of their own except greed. This kind of Stupidity equals elimination from the gene pool.
And that’s what we’re starting to see everywhere we look. I hate seeing young people drop dead (and they’ve been taken advantage of and murdered) but what percentage of them are communists – what do you think? at least 90%? And again the carnage in the inner cities probably near 100%. The war in Ukraine that’s another 100% category. Drug and alcohol abuse 85%, etc. etc..
Lord Jesus, please forgive me my sins, that’s all it takes.
And another percentage of ‘died from unknown causes’ courtesy of big pharma.
Remain Semper Fidelis…

Yeah, I forgot my little orphan Annie secret decoder ring on that mule story and missed the message. Unless there are enough people able to understand this double speak, you are not accomplishing much by using it. We should speak clearly and understandably so everyone will know exactly what we are saying. Unless the story is for special people and not for everyone.
Me thinks you missed more than just the message of the allegory.
As Sundance explained above, the allegory isn’t for everyone.
He admits it. And I missed it too. But upon further review, the slow-mo helps those of us who are, well, slow. How many read it first time and did not quite understand, but are too proud to admit it?
In the movie The Pope’s Exorcist, there is a line, repeated more than once-probably because of its significance and it would blow past the slow. “Their sins will seek them out.”
There comes a time to come clean.
I remember reading Ernest Hemingways “The Old Man and the Sea” in high school amd thinking it was a very simplistic story. My eyes were opened once I understood all the allegories. We need to retrain our brains to see through the story ti the deeper meanings.
I hated The Old Man and the Sea. Everyone in my class in high school hated that book. What were the secret messages in that book. I’d be interested to know.
It’s one thing to miss it; it’s something else entirely to lambast Sundance for creating it.
He could could have stated his view in a kindler and gentler manner. However, having a thin skin is not helpful, it, as C.S.Lewis wrote, is a sign of how thick is our pride.
Having worked retail for thirty years I’ve had plenty of practice at developing a thick skin- it does not come easy. Anyone positing ideas in the public arena should not let the insulting part of the criticism distract from the point of the criticism and should simply consider the validity of the criticism.
Let your answer be yes or no.
Well, don’t forget to drink your Ovaltine.
I agree, allegory is one thing. Secret code is another. Within an organization, code works where the other does not share the culture. We cannot talk code and successfully talk circles around the enemy, because we are of the same culture even though we see things completely different.
We are not North vs South; we are truth vs lie; good vs evil. We must speak truth and pray that those with eyes to see and ears to hear will recognize the truth and be moved by it.
Mental illnesses: paranoia, delusion/psychosis, play tricks on the minds of those who suffer from them, and suffering and stress can trigger these illnesses. I do not think speaking in code is wise, and may even encourage illness among some who will find only more confusion. Rather, seek wisdom and speak wisely.
Mules are smart, and a once necessary asset to rural living. Symbolism is not code. In Columbia, TN they celebrate Mule Day, not jack-asses. It was once Home to Polk, who kept a diary during his time in office because he distrusted the press to report the truth and he wanted his version of the events to be recorded. Today’s press are, for the most part, liars. History and symbolism help to understand the fog of war and though it is not a hot one, ‘tis a war we’re in.
Readers here can recognize wisdom. Truth speaks. From your lips to God’s ears. Keep speaking truth. (Or, as Buckley wrote in God and Man at Yale- keep writing.)
Amen!
I’m luckily old enough that the I detected a message was “in there”. I had some exceptional English teachers along the way.
So I got most of the message.
Consider the reasons why this communication method will be needed.
Then the sensors(sp) can recognize your point.
The reason we can not do so, speak plainly, ask yourself what that might be?
Even had the story simply been about Mules, there were real lessons to be learned.
Be steadfast, humble, honorable and do the absolute best that you can to help.
Survival is about protecting the family, the community and doing everything possible to insure their wellbeing.
Pray, till, farm, hunt, you name it. We must learn how to survive and function together within this new reality.
We can all benefit from a good story, now and again. Amen.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, …..if everyone here knows what is going on then let us stop the craziness by putting on a complete and total shutdown of our commerce. We the People run and control everything. The elites and politicians, the cops that bow to their
warlords do NOT.
We could save this country ….by a total strike on everything.. I know many aren’t prepared but guess what ? Neither were
many in 1774, 1775 and 1776 and beyond.
They and their brave fathers, mothers, sons and daughters put everything they had out to dry to fight against TYRANNY!
We are so far passed that now. Go on…..check your cellphone for a fu(ing message. You might have missed something.
SPIT!
Thanks for the the “Collars” explanation. That one did not come to me. I pretty much guessed correctly in regards to the other word usages.
Yeah, I missed that one too. I interpreted it to mean the struggle we’re going to face in the days ahead. If you lack the fortitude to settle into that harness and pull with all your heart and soul then you’re just another jackass in the field.
You can never have too many collars. Or the shiny inserts.
Same for me. I grasp the big picture and the essence of the other symbols, but never having owned a collar, I did not grasp it’s true meaning, although I pondered it a while. I kept seeing it as pressure being put upon the person.
It’s all coming. How, when, where is unknown, but why is determined.
Facepalm… I didn’t read the article as I took “mules” to be the illegal immigrants who cross our borders with illegal goods and that subject angers me, both for the those who are unwittingly enslaved for the task and for our country hit with this onslaught. Never occurred to me to give it any other reference but for the animal that brays.

This has been a theme in all of the discussions I have had with all the men I know in my Bible studies and from work over the course of the past few years.
Not just some of the men.
All of the men.
Men with significant skills, wisdom, experience and a tempered yet waning patience.
I love this.

I don’t know of any other political site that is better than CTH at presenting the unvarnished reality to its readers but also maintain an optimistic viewpoint or path to correction.
It has been depressing to watch or listen to some “pundits” and GOP politicians as they express some initial obligatory concern over Lawfare’s and the Democrats multi indictments of P Trump but then quickly move on to apathy or even comedy. Other political sites concentrate mostly on the negative news without balance or suggestions.
CTH and presumably other outlets (I might not have seen) that genuinely support MAGA maintain that essential balance. There has to be at least a vision of a better future and credible suggestions on how to ensure it happens.
The outrageous J6 prison sentences are designed to subdue the venting of political opposition including large protest marches. The left has the gov’t power and it is exercising it to the limit against their political opponents and going soft on most real crimes. This is an effective and disgusting tactic and even though PT has not broken any laws, despite the latest fallacious allegations and indictments, his decision to run for POTUS and compete legally “and peacefully” against his opposition in an election has caused the “Democrat powers” to attack him viciously in every way possible.
The fact that Trump’s support is not in the eighties or nineties in the Republican party is disgusting given what America will look like if they eliminate PT.
The fact that so many supposedly “conservative/ Republicans are running against him and have the gall to bad mouth him is even more disgusting. We need to ensure that every one still running against him is NEVER again elected to any public office. We now know where their priorities are.

Just watched Episode 20 on Tucker on X, his interview with Victor Orban.
I think Orban nailed the situation quite well.
“Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.”
Star Trek The Next Generation. I saw the episode many times. If my memory serves me right, it had the message of two strangers becoming friends and team mates against a common enemy.
I stopped watching the series reruns several years ago when Patrick Stewart (Picard) joined in with the Hollyweird mob “virtue signaling” garbage against President Trump.
The last straw for me was when Stewart said “I am becoming an American to fight Trump.” Haven’t watched anything that asshat Brit plays a character in since. Can’t stand him anymore. “Shaka, when the walls fell”
Agree about the lefty asshat.
My emphasis is the allegorical communication which bound the two characters together.
Yes, I know and it is a great example. I caught the meaning immediately upon seeing your post.
Thus my “Shaka, when the walls fell” is my allegorical communication referenced from the episode that implies my last time I watched anything Stewart was in because of his lefty virtue signaling.
I got that too.

True confession, I am a little obsessed about Sundance.

True confession. I AM obsessed with this site.
It’s content and it’s posters have been invaluable to me.
Carry on obsessing.
Cheers!
I’ve never met Sundance but I absolutely love him. I learned so much from this site, more than I ever thought possible. I’ve been here for more than 12 years, increasing my education every day.

I think as my homework on allegories, I’ll re-read my favorite:
C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia.
I still get goosebumps any time I read the phrase “Aslan is on the move.”
The entire series of course has many pithy bits of wisdom about the Christian life. The Last Battle approaches. Time to re-read the sci fi trilogy especiaThat Hideous Strength
things I’ve been pondering…. The application of Alinsky. The inability to imprison half the country. The necessity of surveillance cameras in an authoritarian state. I said a long time ago that Trump and those on his side should have read excerpts from that book in a press conference to show America the plot against him by the Left.
He should have done it with the Russia, Russia shit and then said, “It’s HILLARY!”
The Lord Jesus’ Parable of the Sower is an example of allegory.
Matthew 13:1-9
I think at one level I did understand what was being said. Not wanting it to be so because I am old but not a mule.
Symbolism is an important strategy in this age of deception. We need to understand it to discern who we can trust.
That’s why memes have been so effective to communicate truth.

It wasan’t about mules?
I missed the full meaning and didn’t comment because I knew I was missing a good bit. The story was beautiful, but it felt sad and angry, yet necessary. Plowing was hard dirty work, but a good mule made the work lighter, made it possible for animals and people to eat the next winter. I did understand the reference to what comes after Amen, but didn’t understand how it applied.
What came to mind at the time I read “Rise Up, Oh Mules” were stories of the ending of the Civil War. At Appomattox, Lee asked Grant if his soldiers could take their personal horse or mule home with them. Grant had not realized that the CSA didn’t own the animals and granted Lee’s request. A story from a friend was that her grandfather travelled back from Appomattox to Alabama. The trip of man and mule took several months.
I’m glad to have the explanation.
Sundance is one of the best writers I have ever come across. I’ve told him that. I guessed there was allegory there, but I was too busy enjoying the story about mules (imagine that).
I’ll play along and acknowledge your Green Dragon Inn. It’s a good place to start a journey I’ve heard.
Tolkien claimed to dislike allegory, yet his books have become one of the most allegorical.
Perhaps the answer is here from Tolkien: “I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.”
It’s perfect because he is exactly right, I think. What Sundance did with his story is “domination” in the sense that it was his message he was trying to convey, whereas Tolkien believed he was just narrating events for people to find their own message within.
After amen, a new beginning, the future.
An armored column can pass unheard in the night if the wind is strong enough and in the right direction. If one is careful where feet are placed an approach can be secret but the surest way is “Speed is security.”

Your Kung Fu is strong fleemit. Alas, I can only think in infantry tactics.
A crisis-column has to move slooow, to obtain as many narrative opportunities as it can, but also has to be seen for the crisis to have maximum opportunistic effect.
The faster the crisis-cycle, the less confidence can be obtained to maximize the opportunity of the crisis. Put another way, it’s a con job.
trans-crisis = climate-crisis = race-crisis = everything-crisis
Faster please.

I must have understood it on a somewhat superficial level. I found it to be reminiscent of a very hard and sad time. The ending phrase “ find an old mule and ask them what comes after Amen” made me wish I could ask my Dad that very question. Not only as my Daddy but especially in the context of him being a WWII vet. Of course he is no longer here, so I guess it’s something along the lines of “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition”.

For a refresher course, I guess it is time for me to start re-reading my ol’ high school copy of “Animal Farm.” (“Through the tale of a group of farm animals who overthrow the owner of the farm, “Animal Farm” explores themes of totalitarianism, the corruption of ideals, and the power of language” A political allegory by Orwell.)
Orwell observed it and wrote about it.
Zamyatin lived it and wrote about it.
Some animals are more equity then others.
I read it; got it and commented about my Dad’s big farm for a big family and how we lived daily, independently….
Just waiting for the pancake recipe Sundance.
Love your writings.
Read them daily, whether I comment or NOT!
Stay Frosty!
One of the best allegorical writings was Orwell’s Animal Farm. Yes in the future we will have to talk allegoric riddles!
“Comrade, your statement is factually incorrect.”
“Yes, it is. But it is politically correct.”
Once you explained, I understood – for this piece. In an English class, we were asked if Lord of the Rings was fantasy or allegory. That question made no sense to me; still doesn’t. My belief was that the feelings in it were too real to be allegory. In my little world, algebra makes sense. Accounting and I are not friends. At all.
I remember reading literature from the Soviet Union and being impressed how the authors expected the readers to look for depths of meanings I completely missed. I found it exhausting.
But then, it’s tiring and slow to cross a field as a soldier, with a full load of equipment and constantly scanning for danger. It’s much easier for a child to run freely across the field. But the child can only do that after the soldier has made the field free.
Another source of allegory is the Bible. Chuck Colson pointed out once that there was some occasion in Britain in WWII where all they had to say was “But if not” and people then knew the Bible well enough to recognize the reference to Daniel 3:18 where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego say that God will protect them “but if not” they will still not bow down to Nebuchadnezzar’s idol.
I think there are still many Bible references Americans as a whole would recognize.
“exhausting”… Sounds like critical legal studies.
Brain fatigue may or may not induce doublethink.

Never Push Down, Up Stairs Better
I spent 50+ years in Chicago. So sad to see it’s demise. At any rate, I started to plan my escape in 2016 and got out last year. After PDJT became President things went ballastic. Then there was COVID and “The Summer of Love.” I was kicked out of a restaurant for verbalizing my support for Trump. I know a bar that was doxxed and shut down for protesting the protests, and had an acquaintance who was swatted for putting up a Trump lawn sign. That’s what we’re up against. These people are out for blood. Needless the say, there were various verbal and non verbal ques I used to navigate through enemy territory. If someone was mask defiant, you knew they were one of us. Usually, the enemy shows their hand too easily as they love to virtue signal and are very hyperbolic. But if someone seemed based I always found a way to vet them before engaging in a dialogue. Never trust a Marxist! Find a red state and make it more red. It’s much easier to live in an echo chamber than have to survive behind enemy lines.

Let me ask a stupid question. It’s not about the interpretation of Sundance’s allegory. Has the illegal deep state surveillance gotten so wide spread, so intrusive that in order to avoid AI censors we must avoid open honest discussions of how to fix the current massively corrupt government online! In stead we need to talk about it in allegories? Is that the real essence of what Sundance was trying to communicate? Just wondering?
.
Partly, yes.
.
Yes.
Young and inexperienced mules were paired with old mules so they would learn from the best. Younger mules had to learn what the collar meant and when to pull into the collar even harder. The older mules taught many young ones how to pull their weight and plow the fields. By the time the old mules ere put out to pasture for good they had “trained” many other young mules, and the cycle repeated.
Welcome to the lodge. John just left carrying a square and a pair of compasses. There’s a hurrican’ a comin’.
Was working around the farm the other day. in the afternoon, read your article. The furniture needed a fresh cleaning, some last minute preparation before the rains. AS I go about my daily work, and in town I ask if the issues befalling “45” have been noted. Especially the young in my area, are more knowing than one expects – Spent some time with a scotch and cigar, reflection. As to an allegory, it is my position that the “silent majority” exists in other terms for today. Having to climb out the window at 12, my writing is poor, while my log over time keeps me engaged.
When the clips on Whatfinger news are from the inner city boys, speaking to the fact “45” is really for them, the socio-communist fraternity might have a bigger challenge – In any case, the bridge we might have to cross, will not be as the first-at almost 80 years, speed is no longer the issue in this race – faith is.
One more thing, a third reading, like watching a superb movie brings forth many little tidbits.
