The sanctions levied against Russia by the collective West have essentially failed. There is inconvenience within Russia amid ordinary citizens for global and economic transactions, but most of the govt transactions have continued.
On the opposite side of the consequence coin, absent the ability to purchase consumer goods on the global market, Russian domestic consumer independence has grown dramatically. There is more stuff being made and created inside Russia, for Russians to purchase, than ever before.
I cannot see how the Russian GDP doesn’t benefit from this in the long-term.
Then again, I don’t buy the official Western narrative about the “horrible” life inside Russia, because I talk to ordinary middle class Russians who seem to have found a way to organize life without too much disturbance.
Russia is actually a case study in the elimination of imports and the economic outcomes therein.
It doesn’t suck to be a consumer; average Russians are doing fine, and it seems to get better over time. Ironically, give them a few more years of Western sanctions, and Russia could be a manufacturing powerhouse. Russia is a big country with a lot of raw material resources.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he extend a deal allowing the safe Black Sea export of grain from Ukraine in return for connecting a subsidiary of Russia’s agricultural bank to the SWIFT international payment system, sources told Reuters.
Russia has threatened to ditch the grain deal, which expires on Monday, because several demands to dispatch its own grain and fertilizer abroad have not been met. The last two ships traveling under the Black Sea agreement are currently loading cargoes at the Ukrainian port of Odesa ahead of the deadline.
A key demand by Moscow is the reconnection of the Russian agricultural bank Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT international payment network. It was cut off by the European Union in June 2022 over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. An EU spokesperson said in May the EU was not considering reinstating Russian banks.
However, the EU is considering connecting to SWIFT a subsidiary of Rosselkhozbank to allow specifically for grain and fertilizer transactions, three sources familiar with discussions told Reuters on Wednesday. The European Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (read more)

Economics is built on trust. Even reintroducing SWIFT back into Russia would mean a very slow, minimal uptick in support. Trust is broken and would need to be rebuilt. A gold-backed currency isn’t going to replace the dollar as reserve currency; it would only serve to strengthen it and cause more problems economically around the globe as more dollars are drained from the system while dollar-denominated debt remains. ‘It’s our currency but your problem’ I believe the phrase was. The Eurodollar system, the true global monetary system, is an insane beast to understand.
There’s a very interesting book newly published by Roy Sebag entitled “The Natural Order Of Money.” He believes gold & silver have been used as money since the beginning of time for a reason. It’s beauty, functionality, resistance to entropy, rare and difficult to extract from nature. He sites the Hebrew Bible and the earliest of written laws that refer to the use of fixed weights of silver and gold as money. He believes the natural order of money has been perverted by today’s economic system. (No doubt) My $.02 is there will be a reckoning of the US/Euro dollar.

The deal was to ship grain to the world’s poorest countries and the deal was to include both grain and fertilizer from Ukraine and from Russia. However, Ukraine has only shipped 3% to the world’s poorest countries, while 44% has gone to the world’s richest countries. At the same time, Russian grain and fertilizer have been blocked.
Does anyone realize why Ukrainian grain was so important to the west? Over 70% of Ukraine’s agriculture is controlled by western multinational corporations.
At the same time, the port of Odessa was used by Ukraine, under cover of the grain deal, for launching submarine drones to attack Crimea – specifically the Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol. Odessa has also been used, under cover of the grain deal, to import munitions, weapons, and armored vehicles.
BTW, I am purposely using the Russian translation of the name – Odessa, rather than the Ukrainian name – Odesa. I hope the Russians refuse to renew the deal.

I’m Russian, I was born in Beirut and grew up mainly in the States. I have family & friends there. Sundance is right things are going to be stronger than ever in Russia. Russians love President Putin, all NATO and Biden did was strengthen the love of country.
I also follow Rebel News here in Canada, they sent one of their reporters there in Jan/Feb to check out the supermarkets, talk to the people. The stores were fully stocked more so than here, clean, beautiful, different brands, varieties galore. The reporter spoke to the people outdoors, they all said they thought very highly of Putin, they were not wanting for anything except warmer weather. It was so nice to see the people socializing, they looked well fed and spoke damn good English. God Bless Russia!!

What little I know about Russian history and culture I find very fascinating and rich. If us people from here, Ukraine, Russia could only get together over a smorgasbord and figure out a way to keep from getting blindsided by our beloved rulers.
Our daughter was in St. Petersburg several years back and loved it. Wonderful food and lodging, clean streets, friendly people. Bit of a hassle getting in from Helsinki with lots of check points. My second hand account, My Russian wife has a son, his wife and grandson still living in Russia today. They are fine. They Just can’t get Coke Cola anymore. lol When the swift was shut down, there was some disruption for a week, then everything fine again. Although, she has some money in a Russian bank that is very hard to get to out now. We even looked into moving it through a Turkish Bank. I think this is why the un-official exchange for US$ for Rubbles is way up since the swift shutdown. Before, when she would travel back, she always took a $100 bills with her. But, they had to be nice crisp clean bills. Used dirty bills were worth 30-40% less!
On a different note, she has told me that the crack down on any anti-war sentiment has gotten severe in this last year.
I noticed some time back that a brokerage site I use to check the market quit listing the Russian ruble.
