Oliver notes we are approaching a moment when the truthfulness of the climate change debate needs a full and public confrontation. Either there is truth, or the foundation of the claims are built upon lies.
Oliver has discussed this topic before; however, when contrast against the collapse in trust based on conduct during the pandemic, and when overlaid against the wholesale collapse in trust toward almost all government institutions, perhaps now really is the best time to confront the fraud known as “climate change.”
Does the climate change? Of course, it does. In the short term that’s known as weather and in the longer term, a term much longer than human’s ability to influence it, climate change is why glaciers melted, mountains formed and the topography for a state like Florida rose from under the Gulf of Mexico as water levels declined. Not believing in god does not mean one does not believe in an afterlife. That is the hope. Lets’ start with the obvious first…. The vast majority of atheists throughout history have been materialists…. i.e. they believe only the material world exists and that there is no spiritual world and no afterlife. It is accurate to assume that all who claim the title “atheist” are materialists without specification.
The idea that humans “developed” a consciousness (as opposed to being created with it) whether you mean as individuals or collectively indicates your belief in evolution… which is a theory developed by materialists/atheists that excludes the possibility of the supernatural and excludes any cause or effect that is not deemed “natural” (or material and without consciousness or will) as well as holding to a belief in absolute uniformitarianism (i.e. what we observe and measure now about the universe and the material systems therein is the way that it has always been) which again points to a godless point of view… (and I might add a magical one, i.e. the observation of the effect while claiming there is not and cannot be a cause for it). This again is an indicator that one does not believe in an afterlife.

That would mean you are not an atheist but believe nature is a form of “god” even if you do not use that word…. Of course, a huge question is, which “god” are these “pro-god” people claiming to worship and follow? An evil “god” or a good “god”? You then quote the words of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, (Who you claim you do not believe in) and then try to hold the rest of us to His standard… a standard you yourself fail to uphold. The theory that 8 billion people could fit inside Texas is only using numbers. It would be entirely impossible in practice because it would mean every square inch of ground (dirt, rocks, canyons, mountain tops etc.) – minus only bodies of water (rivers, ponds, lakes etc.) – would be inhabited by people, giving each person about 70 square meters of space, with NO roads, streets, access paths, or commercial facilities to serve the population.
Another scenario is to have the world population live “like New Yorkers” in Texas – all in high rise apartments / condos. That way it would open up enough land to have access ways throughout, and commercial facilities to serve the population. Of course this scenario is also entirely impractical and impossible.

I live in a very small semi-rural town. From my property, I can only see about a block away. The terrain here in the mid-Atlantic’s Piedmont Plateau zone is gently rolling and well-forested between farm fields . One has to drive around for many miles to get a sense of the population density out here, despite our being only about twenty-some miles as the crow flies from the center of Baltimore City.
Even if the city folk would get out of their highrise in the city and drive across this gorgeous country of ours they would see how vast the space is!

I find it most “interesting” that those pushing the greenhouse gas emissions never take into account the effluent from their nose & mouths as well from their “nether” regions. I by no means worship at the alter of climate change. That the political process has been rerouted to service the financial interests of a small number of elites who sit at the peak of the wealth pyramid is clear. That said, one has to be careful not to toss out any part of the conversation simply based on the source.
The environmental movement started, in earnest, with Earth Day etc., during the late 60s. So, the “awareness” has been around for a while – at least in terms of our lives. The storyline has political (i.e., power, freedom), economic (i.e., cost/benefit) and technical (i.e., physics) vectors. There are elements of truth in each vector – though I align with those who argue the political vector has the least believable magnitude or acceptable direction.
I prefer to track the technical level – with a strong lean toward freedom. It’s not that everyone is lying. There is certainly strong epidemiological evidence that sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxide, smog, etc., have had deleterious health impacts. Anyone who has lived near a paper mill knows that’s not an ideal location to sink roots. It’s a fact that there was period in our history where basic industry did not attend adequately to issues like air and water pollution.
While I proudly own a 2009 ICE machine and fully expect to continue so until it collapses 10 years or more from now, “reality” is that EV battery/traction engines are more energy efficient and less damaging to the environment. On the flip side, the data/analysis to this point, has not been convincing on how EV at scale plays out in the aggregate once one looks at the tradeoffs involved from an E2E pov IRT net external diseconomies. But this notion that there are no costs status quo ante is a shot in the foot.
What’s missing is a holistic, unbiased analysis. There are many dimensions to this. Small example – who to believe when it comes to modeling global oil and gas reserves? Have we hit peak oil? Who knows – I don’t think so. But what’s the uncertainty? That’s what I expect science and political communities to arbitrate in a process bound to unbiased, peer reviewed analysis conducted by individuals and organizations with established fealty to integrity. If it turns out that such a process reports the magic number as 30 years, then that’s the starting point for transition planning of some sort (i.e., not the seat of the pants stuff we see going on now).
There are pieces of truth on all sides – as well as intentional falsehoods. It’s hard work spading them out buried as they are in mountains of emotive, irrelevant distractors and barriers to entry when it comes to the underlying physics/technical complexity; doubly difficult when we know there are bona fide idiots in the conversation (Hi Greta!), greedy corporate interests and power focused leadership who have demonstrated personal issues with truth and observance of rule of law.
The goal here is getting to ground truth so good, risk based decisions can be made – weighted, at least in my calculus, by impacts to freedom.

The average annual temperature is -32 degrees centigrade. There isn’t going to be any catastrophic melt.
Some of those glaciers are big enough that they are actually resting on the seafloor. Those are already displacing a lot of seawater as it is.
What of it? Does the water level of a glass of ice-water rise when the ice melts? No.
Is the ice going to melt when the temperature is at 0 degrees centigrade or below? No.

Much of Antarctica’s ice could melt in theory and it would not have nearly as impact on global sea levels as what these climate cultists claim. Key words, if it could melt.

A few years ago my wife and I visited Glacier National Park, specifically the Many Glacier Lodge for dinner. On the walls of the hall between the Lodge and the restaurant they had black and white photos of all of the glaciers. There was a Ranger talking to a group of people of which I joined discussing the glaciers. The Ranger then made a comment about how sad it was that very soon you wouldn’t be able to see any of the glaciers due to man-made global warming. Since I am not one who is afraid to speak up I said well, if we had global cooling we wouldn’t be standing here now would we – you wouldn’t even be able to get into the park or even close to it.

In thermodynamics there is a term called specific heat. It is the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree. Specific Heat of a mixture of gases which is what air is is defined by the sum of mole % of each gas in the mixture X the specific heat of that gas. The amount of CO2 in air is currently 400 ppm or .04 % of air. The specific heat of CO2 can be calculated by an equation along with the other gases that make up air. I have done the calculations and increasing the amount of CO2 10 fold (5 times the doubling of CO2 levels the IPC carries on about) will result in a temperature increase of 0.24 degrees C at 56 degrees C (133 degrees F) and 0.007 degrees at 0 degrees C (32 degrees F). The equations used to calculate this are well proven and have been used for about 100 years by engineers to successfully design heaters, air conditioners, air compressors, and various heating processes. In order to get the atmospheric heating that the IPC is claiming 80% of the O2 in the atmosphere would have to become CO2 . It would take a planet ending event like a huge asteroid smashing into the earth and fracturing mantle of the earth and causing world wide volcanic activity to do this. Human activity causes only 3% of the current CO2 emissions so driving your SUV is not going to impact the global climate neither is coal fired power plants.

Hearing talk about climate change is quite enervating. I was born in 1946, a first-year baby boomer. Our house in Indiana was not insulated. I was outside all day long all summer long and had a morning and evening paper route which I did on my bicycle. It was hot in the summer and very cold in the Winter. I cannot perceive of any difference with how things are today.
We didn’t have the type of cold-weather clothing we have today. If it existed then, we wouldn’t have been able to afford it anyhow. Lying in the Summer upstairs the sweat just dripped off us. That’s just the way things were then.
People in the know write that from birth to age 80 a person might see the average temperature increase 1 degree Celsius. That’s virtually unnoticeable. So how much do you want to pay some government entity because of that lifetime maybe0 one degree rise? That’s all you need to ask yourself. It’s no more complicated than that. The answer, of course, is a big fat $0.
Those who take your money are going to make a big fat 0% change in the climate anyway. Odds are that if they had any affect at all, they would make thing even worse. Government is the gold standard for screwing almost anything up.
If you are near the ocean, find some place where the high water was marked a hundred years ago. Where is the high-water mark today? I read several places that the marks today and 100 years ago are the same.
My point is that one doesn’t have to be a STEM major or have any technical skills to know that climate change is no emergency. It is a hoax and a scam. Anyone who has lived a few years should be able to figure this out.
