It is actually very important to you to know “what the winds are doing at 60,000 to 80,000 feet.” (The “jet streams.”) What’s the best way to find out? Balloons.
But … not just “‘primitive’ balloons!” Rather, balloons which are equipped to “remain at altitude” for months if not for years.
Nope … “this has to be a purely political ploy, and therefore logically a smoke screen.” Given that the entire thing “makes no logical sense,” what are they hiding?

What about our NOAA satellite constellations? Weather balloons are about as useful as buggy whips today. Special uses for special occasions.
Having been involved with weather balloons for over 30 years before retiring…
They are sent up twice a day and transmitted pressure, temp, humidity, etc until the balloon burst due to the pressure at whatever altitude they gained. Sometimes they could go rather high, other times they burst at lower altitudes. Much of it had to do with the quality of the balloon and conditions at release and it’s ascent.
When certain storms moved in, balloons might be requested to be released more than the twice a day in order to gather fresher data.
Lots of the data was fed into various models for forecasting.
At least the computer models used to be based on some facts. Today a weather model seems to be written by the Al Gore or Michael Mann wishful thinking computer.
It depends on the model. There were several forecasters could use, often choosing whatever they were most comfortable with.
There were ALWAYS obvious outliers that were rejected for use in a forecast because of how biased it was.
Up until about 2090 we used to find them regularly on our ranch but none since. So either their range has got longer or the wind pattern has changed.
Can you shed any light on that?

Depends on where you are at. It’s possible the releasing station switched from Helium to Hydrogen, or the balloon quality got much less, or better. I’ve seen both.
It was shocking how many radiosondes were rejected, or balloons that had flaws causing an early end to the flight.
Weather balloons still provide the readings that punch holes in that tropospheric hot spot necessary for global warming IIRC

Biden did nothing. Congress needs to be asking if this balloon carried certain payloads, why wait to act until it got over a much more populated area? Regardless of payload, acting after it got closer to much higher populated areas just increased any possible damage.
After it was shot down, some DOD official was claiming it had explosives on board, supposedly to self-destruct. How would they know that unless a plane got close enough to sample possible gases/chemicals given off? If they detected explosives in some manner, what else did they detect? When did they determine explosives were on board?
Buttgig can’t get planes to fly on time or shipping unloaded in a timely manner, but he knows enough to declare a Chicom balloon floating through the nation’s airspace was safe for aviation?
How would Mattis keep any information on these 3 previous incursions if they were not known about until after he left office?

What about the citizen recording of some kind of explosion, or at least a flash, when the ballon was still over Montana? Was there a targeted EMP or something that disabled it and thats why no concern sbout it floating across the country?

According to the published path, they flew right over Y-12 National Security Complex! Can you imagine if they had dropped a bomb? Maybe it was “just a balloon” but are we prepared for the time that it is *more* than just a balloon?
