I did not have internet access for most of today, another long-term recovery issue. However, now that I am seeing the footage of the earthquake in Southern Turkey and Northern Syria, my prayers are for all of those in the region. The devastation is just incredible.
According to the Associated Press, 5,600 buildings have collapsed and several of them came down today during aftershocks amid search and rescue operations. The current recorded death toll is over 4,300 people, with the World Health Organization (WHO) predicting the total loss of life could exceed 20,000. This is just horrific.
The estimated 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit over an area of several major population centers. The Guardian reports, “the population of the ten provinces in southern Turkey affected by the earthquakes are home to 13.5 million people. So far, according to the Andalou agency, more than 5,600 buildings have collapsed.
It is just after 6am in Turkey, and we’re seeing stories of people rescued after a very long day and night, which means they survived not only the rubble’s collapse but the cold. There are many, many more who have not yet been found, with the WHO predicting the death toll could reach 20,000 in the coming days. For now, here are videos of a three-year-old toddler and a woman who were freed from collapsed buildings by rescuers.” (link)

In Diyarbakir in southeast Turkey, a woman speaking next to the wreckage of the seven-storey block where she lived said: “We were shaken like a cradle. There were nine of us at home. Two sons of mine are still in the rubble, I’m waiting for them.”
She was nursing a broken arm and had injuries to her face.
“It was like the apocalypse,” said Abdul Salam al-Mahmoud, a Syrian in the northern town of Atareb. “It’s bitterly cold and there’s heavy rain, and people need saving.” (more)
All-powerful Father, as we see all of the destruction caused by this natural disaster, we mourn for all that has been lost and the fragility of this life.
Lord God of mercy, please comfort those who have lost somebody they love, and those who are yet still searching. Give them comfort and peace.
Heavenly Father, be a protective wing for those who have survived, but lost their home. Grant the men, women and children the needed fortitude and assistance they need to recover and rebuild. Show me how best to pray for their needs and guide my prayer.
Lord God of all creation, be strong with directed purpose for those whose job it is to search through the rubble for those lost. Give them endurance and strength as they complete their responsibilities.

The large earthquake in eastern Turkey was preceded by one located at its antipode north of New Zealand. Note there are HAARP-like facilities in Norway, Finland, Sweden (EISCAT). Some of the buildings that collapsed were new construction.
And that’s where an absence of quality control becomes an issue.
Observing some of the wreckage, it appears many buildings were brick and mortar with lightly reinforced concrete in some sections.
Incredibly mind-numbing speed of their failure was frightening.
Earthquake design has been around for some time. Frank Lloyd Wright, back in the early part of the last century designed the Imperial Hotel in Japan prior to their major quake. After the quake, Wright’s effort stood tall and proud while other buildings were no longer standing. One can offer many excuses, but the laws of good structural engineering stand the tests of time…and earth quakes!
I would bet the codes are OK, if not great.
In that part of the world, in that culture, it’s more a code compliance issue.
Expect some serious lawsuits against contractors at the least.

Yesterday, 2/6/23 someone posted on the presidential thread posts from “Canadian Earthquake Researcher”. He posted these Tweets from January 17,2023 about why he thinks that the world is set for some serious earthquake activity. One part of the world is this very section in Turkey that has 3 tectonic plates nearby. The other part of the world he focused on was the Japan to mid-Philippines area. His hypothesis is that the world has been relatively quiet for major earthquakes which means that the tectonic plates have become “stuck” and are getting ready to be “unstuck”.

I really think that there is no real safe place to hide during an earthquake. In Turkey, I watched many buildings partially collapse leaving the ground floor crushed and the top 2 floors semi-intact. Maybe, the first floor occupants should have run outdoors. But if you run outdoors, there is the risk of the building toppling over onto you or debris falling on top of you.
Just like in a hurricane, I would guess that a bathtub may keep an airspace around you while the rescuers look for you. If buildings are constructed in a poor manner then I do not think that much of anything is going to save your life.
I live in suburbia. The house shakes, the ground rolls but all in all, stay put is the best way to handle it.

The single most important thing though, is to be prepared and to SIT DOWN.
On 9/11 the workers were told to stay inside the tower. If the building is shaking I would get out immediately, then try to hunker down outside and stand clear of falling debris.

A reminder that the New Madrid Seismic Zone could have a similar magnitude earthquake or series of earthquakes right in the middle of the US. The fault zone runs from Memphis to St Louis with a branch approaching Little Rock.
The Central US Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) has done lots of planning for such a quake, as has done FEMA and the eight states most at risk (Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky).

I have empathy for individuals caught in this disaster but the culture of Muslim countries prevents me from exuding much sympathy. They have mostly eradicated the few Christians who dared to exist in these countries so I’m sure Allah will be with them to help.
Those Christians in Syria date back 2000 years to the days of Christ himself. Obviously somehow they managed to live with the muslims until the 20th century when the western ‘civilized’ countries needed oil. it was our war against Syria that bought ISIS to Syria to kill Christians, not the Syrian government who considered them their citizens. It was Russia who went in to protect them because Russians are Christians of deep conviction with thank yous from the Syrian muslims.

Even assuming only an average of 3 people per apartment, and 10 apartments per building, and a 50% total collapse before people could get out, (all low estimates from the footage) that’s still nearly 50K dead.
Few hard numbers out of Syria, but Antioch appears to be flattened.
I’d be surprised if the final total is not in excess of 100k between Turkey and Syria.

RT.com (Russia Today) has reporters on the ground in Syria. The videos and stories are just horrific. The quakes came in the middle of the night as most were sleeping. They can hear people, relatives, loved ones, trapped in the rubble but have no heavy equipment to move things to get them. Temperatures are around freezing so those people who are alive but trapped will not survive long. Terribly tragic.
iran is in Syria with humanitarian aid and helping. The Russian military is in there with humanitarian supplies and equipment but the devastation is so massive. What has torn my heart most is that other humanitarian groups are not going in because of US sanctions against Syria. They already are in short supply of medicines due to sanctions. So human rights activitists are pleading we lift the sanctions at least temporairly to deal with the quakes.
I was living in Iran when they experienced a huge earthquake during late summer/early autumn in the city of Mashad which is located in the northeast part of the country. Tens of thousands perished. Building codes in that part of the world don’t exist at at. Everything is made of mud as a mortar and bricks as dried mud in that shape. All structures are nothing but a house of cards waiting to collapse. They’ve had this problem for thousands of years yet refuse to design and construct buildings for earthquake prone areas. But alas, Islamic Holymen such as those in Iran and Pakistan have declared that these earthquakes are caused by immoral women being sexually promiscuous and wearing short skirts. Ban them and these earthquake events will stop.
