There are many commentators online who are also saying that the obvious country behind this act of terrorism is the United States. Gonzalo Lira. The Saker. Moon of Alabama. Radek Sikorsky (former Polish foreign minister) on Twitter said, “Thanks, USA.” as Tucker Carlson pointed out.
However, there is also Poland. Poland has become somewhat militant against Germany recently, demanding reparations, demanding promised tanks to replace ones they sent to Ukraine. They are also very militant against Russia. Maybe they hope to replace Germany as the power in the EU and NATO?
One Telegram channel showed a screen shot of a US war ship in the area on August 21 and that there were reports of other US ships in the area in early August. There was a US helicopter strangely flying along the Nordstream 2 pipeline in this area on September 2 (screenshot was shown) and Twitter showed a US aircraft in the same area on September 13. In a “June article in “Sea Power”…the Americans brag about the experiments in the field of underwater drones that they set up in the BALTOPS 22 exercises – precisely in the area of Bronholm Island.”
I hope that the truth will out on this. The amount of logistics, materiel, personnel indicates it was done by some country’s military at a high level, not a rogue unit.
Poland doesn’t have the kind of assets required to pull this off, and they don’t have the supposedly retaliation-insulating distance that the US believes it possesses.
It would have been suicide for Poland to do this, and was damn stupid for any of their pols to celebrate it.
Any decent floater would be a suitable platform, and bottom scanning might be done with commercial marine equipment. After that, placement of any high explosives, preferably some kind of large focal charge should do the job. Even an old WWI battleship shell, reworked.

It is an environmental catastrophe, but not because of the absolute quantity of methane blown into air. As you said, they probably blow way more methane into air in Asia and Africa. It’s because WHERE this happened.
The Baltic Sea is not like other seas and oceans. It’s brackish water and it is fairly shallow. There is more fresh water flowing in to the Baltic Sea from rivers than there is salt water flowing in through the straits of Denmark. The low salinity causes pockets of low oxygen levels in the water, creating areas where fish and plants can’t really live. Those areas get revitalised every few years when there is more seawater from the Atlantic flowing in than usual. The flora and fauna in the Baltic Sea are adapted to living in brackish water and many of them are not living anywhere else in the world.
The original opposition to building the Nord Stream 1 was mostly based on the fragile ecology of the Baltic Sea and the damage that the building process itself and possible leaks later on could cause to the unique environment of the Baltic Sea. Unfortunately they had some heavy-hitter former politicians like Gerhard Schröder lobbying for building it, so the project was completed. Now all the worst fears of people in the Baltic Sea states have come true. So yes, it is a catastrophe.

Considering the concrete encasement I really don’t see any need for this one to have been buried, I personally kind of doubt it was, it was already plenty protected.

it has been performed countless times by oilfield divers in the Gulf and North Sea utilizing an underwater hyperbaric welding habitat..

the depth varies due to bottom terrain.. the Bornholm and Arkona basins are deeper.. if I recall correctly the incident happened near the “pass” between Bornholm and the coast.. which will tend it to be toward the deeper side of the pipeline depth estimate..
it could be done by any country or company that has the capability to physically reach that depth.. obviously explosives would be the most practical way to do the job quickly and easily..
that is a 300 ft dive with an oxygen mix tank on your back or an air-supplied helmet…..HARDLY first-world nation capability

The controversial Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which are supposed to carry Russian gas to Europe, have been breached.

Of the three leaks identified, two affect the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that has two parallel branches that run around 750 miles between a location near St. Petersburg to northeast Germany. Nord Stream 1 has been closed down for maintenance since August and is not currently transporting gas.
One other leak affects the ‘sister’ pipeline, Nord Stream 2, construction of which was suspended by the time Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine.
While neither of the pipelines are currently operational, they both still contain gas, making any kind of significant leak hazardous, including to shipping.
One breach is also mention to be “in ~70 meters of water. This would be would be diveable,” so no hi-tech submersible vehicle would be required. Another obvious question answered.

Speaking of head scratching: EU places sanctions that end gas imports from Russia; Russia states they are shutting off exports to EU; NS 2 never reached certified, operational status. Why is there a sustained flow of gas pouring out of the pipeline leaks? I am aware of some of the technical problems in shutting down the flow. But, this doesn’t compute on all sides. Does anyone know if the damage is localized and easily repaired? Have any countries dispatched repair capabilities to at least arrest the flow of natural gas/carbon into the atmosphere? Wasn’t there a suggestion recently of CIA advancing a warning on this?

The intelligence networks monitoring the area would never let eco-terrorists do something like this unless the U.S. government desired that it be done, and it is extremely unlikely that any eco-terrorists not affiliated with a government would have the resources to pull it off.
