Unfortunately the vast majority of Americans have no understanding of the 2nd Amendment. I would direct them to these clauses in the US Constitution – Article 1, Section 8, Clauses 15 & 16, Article 2, Section 2, Clause 1, the 2nd and 5th Amendments. Americans should also read Section 13 of the 1776 Virginia Declaration of Rights and Justice Joseph Story’s eloquent explanation in Section 1890 of his work titled Commentary on the Constitution of the United States.
For a deeper understanding how The People ARE the government and how the militia of the several states are, in fact, state agencies established by statute or constitution I would direct the reader to the book titled Three Rights by Dr Edwin Vieira Jr.

They should be far more worried about certain scoped rifles, and I suspect that they are. But that’s a far harder class of weapons to go after today, than what they misleadingly label ‘assault weapons’.
Nevermind that it was military weapons and all weapons of lesser military utility that the amendment was intended to protect, as well as weapons which were ‘unpopular’ to government, much like the first amendment was intended to protect speech which was unpopular to government.
Their position relies on the uneducated and the historically ignorant supporting it.

Would seem to me the second amendment does not “give “us our rights– it merely codifies them-so it is not the key. The DOI states clealy that all of our rights come from Nature’s God, and thus “not from government” –nor can any legal or political entity take them away.
That is the key to the dignity of man and laws and lawywers and judges and kings and committees cannot alter the reaity that we are creatures of God–not mere men.
One, cannot, believe in the 2nd Amendment, and attempt to ban guns.
Founding fathers did not include “shall not be infringed” for no reason.
