With barely more than a third of the country supporting the installed occupant of the White House, Joe Biden took to the podium tonight to demand a litany of new gun restrictions. Biden called for the banning of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines through reinstating the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, noting that if that can’t happen, the government should raise the legal age to purchase such weapons from 18 to 21.
Biden also called on congress to construct new federal background checks, which sounded a lot like a federal registration of gun ownership. Also, he is demanding “red flag” laws that will allow schools, counsellors, doctors and others to flag an individual as a threat to themselves or others, thereby removing their right to gun ownership. The Uvalde Police HQ is a casual 3 minute drive from the Uvalde Elementary School yet it took police 15 minutes to arrive giving the teenage shooter enough time to enter the school’s unlocked entrance door. When the police finally arrived they did nothing anyway!
Isn’t locking the school building entrance doors the first thing you do when a crazed teenager outside the school building is shooting at people for 20 minutes?

Depends upon the process state-by-state. I was a sheriff. Our state’s EPC law provided for 48 hr commitment at a crisis center with mandatory evals by 2 psychiatrists. Then, a mental health board (3 civilians and a lawyer as judge) heard from the patient and the docs during a hearing. The docs recommended a treatment plan, if any, and the board decided. The patient could be represented by counsel or their own docs as well. Only time I saw anyone committed to inpatient treatment was a truly batpoop crazy guy, (career meth head) who was also found not competent to stand trial. Still, he only did a year of inpatient treatment…and he “relapsed” as soon as he got out and stopped taking his heavy duty meds.

As a sheriff, I participated in active shooter training for our school systems. One of the things I’d mention to teachers/staff…”If you’ve made the decision to fight the attacker, don’t let the surprise that you know them cause you to hesitate…because you WILL know them.”
They need to develop a program to identify the lone wolves and bullied kids and apply some sort of well-intentioned diversion protocol. It could be designed to work anonymously and not stigmatize the kid unnecessarily.
