The issue of ‘bots’ operating on the Twitter platform is an interesting aspect when you consider the cost of platform operation.
On one hand, extensive auto-generated ‘bots’ would be an issue of cost and data-processing, a net negative. On the other hand, the use of bots would be a manipulative practice for the creation of false impressions to generate advertising revenue.
If the scale of data-processing was subsidized, an outcome of a network of data processing centers -clouds- linked to government resources, the bots would not be an issue for the operation. Despite the false impressions generated, bots would, however, under this weird situation, be useful for the manipulation of the conversation. At the root of Elon Musk’s line of inquiry is the need to discover if this suspicion is true.
If the scale of bots has been underestimated (likely by a willfully blind operation) the advertising fees charged by Twitter were potentially fraudulent. This is another operational reason (mitigating lawsuits from advertisers) for Musk to make the determination prior to the final purchase of the platform.
Taking Twitter private as a company, eliminating bots (which is essentially removing fraudulent users) then carries the potential benefits of both lowering costs and positioning the company to increase genuine ad revenue from authenticated users as real people.
Many people suspect the size of the political left on the Twitter platform is manipulated by programatic bots. Meaning there seems to be more people on the left side of the spectrum because bots are deployed to give the impression of like-minded users. I am one of the people who believe this suspicion is accurate, because it would be a typical way the ideological left operates.
The bots would be in addition to the deployment of algorithms that are designed to suppress speech the platform operators do not like.
I have long suspected the Twitter algorithm process is essentially assigning certain users into specifically designed data-processing containers where their voice is suppressed. Some people call this ‘shadow-banning,’ I simply call it suppression.
Elon Musk represents a threat to the way the platform was/is designed to operate. If Musk removes the discussion constraints, opens the containers and removes the restrictions, while simultaneously eliminating bots and fake accounts, the entire perspective of the platform could change very quickly. This is what I think the current board and operators are trying to avoid.
As CTH has said for many years, there are more of us than them. However, Big Tech controls the mechanisms we use to communicate – and as a consequence the scale of our assembly is severely understated.
Twitter user fraud is the digital and social media equivalent to voter fraud. The voices raised in opposition to both are exactly the same.

I tried to sit through Dinesh D’Souza’s silly documentary 2000 Mules. He starts by re-playing Biden’s confession to “extensive” election fraud, then starts his investigation. I kid you not.

I get the frustration – I truly do! It does get tiring watching the same talking heads rehashing the same offenses to the same audience over and over again, whilst the rest of the world ignores us and calls us all names…
I did watch 2000 Mules and found it valuable simply because it lays out, in detail, things that you and I (and most Treepers) knew had happened but which most of the world had zero idea about…and for that reason, it is an important tool. IF people are actually looking to find truth, it is a concrete example that we can point them to so they can SEE what happened!
Same thing happened in 2020 when I told several friends, who were staunch BLM supporters, to watch Joel Gilbert’s “The Trayvon Hoax” and it started them questioning the whole narrative they were being told on the nightly news.

Great analogy. It is so much like the 2020 voter fraud, of which we can prove much (but not all), that I am quite sure you are correct about the bot factor. It’s going to be greater than what anyone is thinking because if you’re going to lie, you might as well lie big! Biden won by such a small margin in the swing states, so I’m thinking they had to lie big, even to get that! That’s why they shut down the counting in the middle of the night and in all swing states at the same time…
Not all bots are alike. Some of them were created by people OUTSIDE of the Twitter organization, for a number of purposes.
One example would be the accounts that follow and automatically retweet certain “social media influencers” to increase their “reach” which enhances their income. (Some influencers, like Kim Kardashian, get PAID to tweet, and can even make SIX FIGURES for a single tweet.
Other bots are organized into networks that follow certain political accounts and retreat them in the “Mockingbird” manner to ASTROTURF the threads, giving the false impression that a particular opinion has WIDESPREAD support or agreement.
Rush used to talk about this … he would get attacked by a handful of people, that somehow made an advertiser feel as if hundreds of thousands of people were outraged. When in actuality, its a few people doing all the tweets, complaints, emails. This is why it feels like EVERYTHING is liberal these days. When in fact, its just the ‘amplification’ of these loony ideas that saturates the airwaves. Elon is brilliant if he is able to get this surfaced to the average American. This will shrink their reach, once this is common knowledge.

While reading this i had a thought. What if Musk never intended to purchase twitter at all? I’m certainly no PHD in business but in theory couldn’t He expose twitter without actually purchasing it? In the process of due diligence they could expose the amount of bots on then platform. They could expose if twitter actually owns the servers and processing power needed to run the platform. They could expose any outside funding that twitter needs to keep running. To me it seems they could keep running this play over and over and expose a lot and only spend a few million in lawyers fees instead of the billions of dollars to purchase.
If sundances theory about twitter being an un-profitable business model is true then certainly Musk would know this too. Why would he spend billions on something he knows cant turn a profit?

The “breaking” news this morning on the Bartoroma show, as I understand, was that James Baker, the former FBI counsel, is now an attorney representing the current Board of Directors at Twitter. Baker sent a letter to Elon Musk claiming that Musk’s disclosure of the per centage of “bots” on the Twitter platform violated the non-disclosure agreement entered as part of the sales transaction. This is “small town” news because Baker is scheduled to testify this next week in the US v. Sussmann trial about his duties as the FBI counsel who received Sussmann’s “good Samaritan” tip about Donald Trump and the Alpha Bank. Hard to make this stuff up.

I was on Twitter early when it started and I know the left uses bots because I used to use them when I used to perform black hat marketing and I can tell the left uses them. You create these bots and you age them, you try to make them look natural by commenting on random things, liking random things, etc. Most of the left leaning media outlets use bots on YouTube to like and comment on their videos, I can spot a bot comment a mile away no matter how good their comments are. I don’t think the purchase is going to go through because Twitter can’t let go of their bot audience, it would be devastating to the left. President Obama and people like him would lose millions of followers and it would be obvious why.

Rush Limbaugh discovered, when his advertisers were being inundated with demands that they abandon his show, that the real accounts were only a few of those tweeting and sending DMs. The rest were bots, and after he paid to have that proven he had the proof presented to his advertisers and then left Twitter forever.

Without government financing Twitter and Facebook don’t exist.
A forum I frequented was put up for sale. The owner boasted of 100k+ user accounts to potential buyers. I knew better from observing site activity for the 10 years I was a member. By reviewing several different sorts of the user list, such as number of posts, date of last activity, etc., it showed just 500 active accounts. The rest were inactive, duplicates, people who joined to access the knowledge base, or to ask a question which once answered left never to log in again. For publicly calling out the dishonest owner I was told to leave with my post deleted. In the end, the owner held the forum hostage to an imminent shut down date until a member who wanted to sustain it for the e-relationships long established there, bought it for a fraction of what the owner demanded originally. Similar use data has been seen in every forum I’ve run; a small percentage of user accounts are active and vocal, the rest lurk. The success of a forum seems to be driven by the overall tone / friendliness of the active members. Is the forum welcoming or is posting there like running the gauntlet? Do newbies get help for their questions, or do they get a hostile “RTFM, you idiot!”
I’ll bet Twitter is up to 90% bots and spam accounts. Musk is a smart man; there’s no need to actually purchase it to expose it. May Twitter go the way of MySpace, etc.
Heads, Musk wins, tails Twitter loses.
If they prove that there are less than 5% bots (unlikely), Musk gets Twitter and an opportunity to clean it up.
If they cannot prove less than 5% bots (likely), Twitter gets sued out of existence by investors and advertisers.
