House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a quietly organized trip with a small group of senior House Democrats, including Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and Rules Committee Chair Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) to Ukraine.
The trip comes as Joe Biden is asking congress for an additional $33 billion in aid to fund the government of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, bringing the total U.S. taxpayer laundry operation to around $50 billion. Pelosi and Schiff likely setting up the mechanics for the distribution of funds to include congressional family indulgency fees, or Fourth Branch brokerage costs.
“Our delegation traveled to Kyiv to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine,” the group said in a statement. “When we return to the United States, we will do so further informed, deeply inspired and ready to do what is needed to help the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy for their nation and for the world.” (link)
It is very interesting that Mr Zelensky is not looking at the person he shaking hands with. Also interesting are the comments in the US delegation press release stating the American taxpayer will be helping Ukrainians defend democracy — in a nation where Zelensky has abolished opposition political entities and stifled the information media. He suggested that it was much more likely that the photo-op took place in Ramstein, Germany. Here is his reasoning:
Kyiv is basically in the center of the country roughly a day’s drive from the Poland border. A diplomatic entourage with a convoy of large vehicles traveling from Poland to Kyiv would almost certainly would have been detected by the Russians and destroyed.
Russia has taken complete control of airspace over Ukraine, so there is no way Blinkin could have flown into Kyiv.
When Russia discovered that the US and NATO countries were shipping in weaponry from Poland into Ukraine via rail, they took out the rail lines to Kyiv and other strategic portions of the country. For this reason, it is unlikely that Blinkin could have taken a train to Kyiv. In other words, there is no safe way for a US politician or diplomat to safely travel to Kyiv.
For similar reasons, it is highly unlikely that the pelosi/schiff meeting actually took place in Kyiv.
