Nice but useless under the circumstances. Ukraine must remain a buffer state if it wants to exist. Sorry, but that’s the reality. Unicorns and ribbons are not a part of the deal. When a poor country with crumbling infrastructure and no military power to speak of is situated between a nuclear superpower and the EU, it can’t afford to anger either of them but especially the nuclear superpower. There is a signed agreement already in place.
The best case scenario is neutral Ukraine that does NOT discriminate against ethnic Russians and does not try to join the side hostile to the superpower. The clown who used to prance naked for the crude amusement of the local drunks and who is now their President, should overcome his delusions of grandeur and fulfill his promise to the people — normalize the relationship with Russia, their sister country. No military bases, no attempts to join NATO, no virulent hatred towards fellow citizens, no pogroms. The West does not give a rat’s ass about Ukraine. They use it to poke the bear and launder money.
The current situation is very volatile. Posturing and appealing to the West during the peace talks is a dumb move that can end in a major bloodshed and a destruction of Ukrainian cities.
It is not easy to be pragmatic when you head is full of idealistic nonsense and inspiring quotes but we are talking about survival, not meaningless symbolic victories. Does it matter if Russia suffers devastating “consequences” afterwards if your country is already in ruins and half of your people is dead? The goal of the negotiations is to stop the killing, stop Putin from thinking he must take all of Ukraine.
Take NATO / EU membership off the table, this gives Putin an exit w/ honor, he can say he stopped NATO/EU expansion & Zelensky can rightfully say he defended his country.
This will end in one of two ways, just my 2 cents
Either Putin will be deposed in Russia by his own due to rage at his the country will now suffer or there is going to be ” agreement” between he and Ukraine that Russia can take and maintain the two breakaway regions and leave the rest of Ukraine alone, so Putin can save face. But will there be an agreement in writing between all parties that Ukraine will NOT be joining NATO,EVER ? That’s the push.
The latest news is Zelensky is freeing prisoners with “military experience” to fight Putin in “the hottest spots” and hiring mercs from other countries.

1) “…to prevent further NATO expansion. Second, to have the Alliance refrain from deploying assault weapon systems on Russian borders. And finally, rolling back the bloc’s military capability and infrastructure in Europe to where they were in 1997 when the NATO-Russia Founding Act was signed.”
2) “…to immediately recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic.”
Everything the Russians are doing and will do should be examined in the light of these goals.
