You might have heard media talking about the cost of the “average family Thanksgiving dinner” being 14% more this year than last year [Video Example]. The media is quoting a survey conducted by the Farm Bureau [DATA LINK]. The survey is an exercise in abject nonsense. Before getting into the details, let’s give an example of how the media is reporting about it [20 seconds] WATCH:
According to the Farm Bureau data being promoted by the media in 2021, a full Thanksgiving dinner for ten people costs $53.31 – which is 14 percent higher than last year.
FEED TEN PEOPLE for $53.31 ?
I had to look and see what fairy dust these people were smoking to come up with that number.
I found the Farm Bureau website, found the internal data and checked the shopping list pdf. Here’s what they claim:
Keep in mind, this is presumably for TEN PEOPLE:
Anyone else see a whole lot of silly in this list?
(pdf link)
Good luck making that veggie tray with $0.89 cents worth of carrots and celery. LOL
Anyone want to try going to the grocery store with $55 for Thanksgiving dinner for ten people?
Silly.
All of it.
Just a simple misinterpretation. That’s supposed to be $53.31 per person. /sarc
Only off by an order of magnitude, which ain’t bad for a corrupt, mendacious, and incompetent Democrat.
“$53.31 per doubled vaccinated AND boosted person.”
Ha! The question is…..feed them what?
Heart medicine.
I’m not so sure you needed to add the sarcasm. It sounds legit at $53.31 per person.
Yep. 🙂 The sarc tag was intended to be as sarcastic as the comment!
1 gallon of whole milk where I live is $6. It’s up $1.50 from last year.
And all the things where you get less and a price increase. You used to get (2) 8 oz bottles for 16 oz of children’s Motrin at Costco, now you get (3) 4 oz for 12 oz – and I believe the price went up.
Ditto that! BS on the $3.30/gallon!
Wawa in Clearwater, FL is $3.17/gal. Others are around $3.30/gal.
It’s a conspiracy – the entire world wants me to move to Florida! ?
Just shop the cat food isle
A case of 24 cans of gravy lovers turkey
Costs about that
throw in a few Cans of cranberry and you are good to go
A Commie Thanksgiving
Inviting Kate Brown I see.
That photo makes me sick.
She looks like she has some kind of growth on her face that needs medical attention.
Yeah it’s called her head.
Lol, it is a remake of the Aliens movie with a Christmas Holiday flair to it.
For $30 you can get 20 Banquet turkey dinners and have $23.31 left over for pie. Everyone gets 2 turkey dinners each! Next year will be less because nobody will show up.
Just checked – Hungry Man turkey dinners are $2.99 each so everyone gets ONE – and then you buy one frozen pumpkin pie, one tub of whipped cream, and a gallon of milk, and you’re pretty much out of money, once you factor in the gas to get to the store!
My area is showing $2.13 for those at Walmart.
Don’t the turkey dinners have a dessert? That apple-cherry compote thing?
Foolish spendthrift!
I shall luxuriate with a sumptuous turkey pot pie ($0.79) over a pile of steamed brown rice ($0.25) and fresh steamed onions and bell peppers ($0.50), and a baked potato ($0.40), finished with a pint of plain-label vodka ($0.90, poured from the big bottle) with juice ($0.25) .
$3.09 each, comrade.
Even Banquet turkey dinners, here, were $3.99 each. I just checked them this morning!
Haha…if you can find cat food…canned cat food wiped out in our town Stop and Shop…we do have cats ?,hmmmm, you who…here kitties…oh tastes like chicken!…we saved 23(seriously?)turkey bucks, now we can buy more Thanksgiving peas! ??
Uh oh….I spent half that on just the turkey and dressing ingredients.? (2 kinds of sausage in the dressing along with fresh herbs, etc.)
Govt. is wacko, but there are definitely people feeding 10 on a very small budget. You do what you have to do, and I’m sure we could all find a way.
“You do what you have to do…”
Exactly!! I imagine that my grandmother, a single mom who raised three kids alone in The Depression, because my grandfather was a deadbeat, knew how to stretch her food budget in ways I cannot even imagine!
But the fact that I will have to spend more this year, AND spend more in gas getting it all, makes me frustrated and angry because it didn’t HAVE to be this way! We are retired and on a fixed income, but I am thankful that we are still doing okay, no thanks to BiteMe and his evil handlers!!
God bless these single moms.
Your grandma and my mom could have swapped stories — mine faced ’70s stagflation.
My Mom would have to wait until that paycheck right before the holiday to shop for fixings.
How picked-over and bare those store shelves were! Dented boxes and cans, maybe a fresh bird since there wasn’t time to thaw one. She made much of little.
This year promises to be just as difficult for families.
My Dad died unexpectedly in 1944. You may recall, that was in the middle of WWII. My then widowed Mom had 3 boys, aged 14, 12 and me at 1. One must marvel at how they coped.
…And…having to wander the store over and over trying to find what you can use to replace what you’re actually looking for because those shelves are empty! Gotta get imaginative, I guess kind of like they had to do in that depression.
On the gifts – Bezos wants to force us to buy from Amazon with that free shipping and mostly cheap CCP goods. “Made in China” now means what Made In Japan did when I was a child.
I’ve resisted almost entirely all year. There was one item I absolutely could not find anywhere else, even used, so I had to bite the bullet. I can’t even remember now what it was – probably blocked it out because of the guilt!
But resisting Bezos is one of my new beloved hobbies.
Sausage stuffing sounds good! I would have to add the oysters to my stuffing because of tradition.
but anybody with a rake can find those in the flats for free.
I’m skipping over to the recipe thread to post my family’s sausage stuffing recipe.
They dont count the WIC coupons everyone is going to need. What a Sh!t show… Good Luck! and Happy Thanksgiving!!
You buy a turkey breast, and cube it. Mix in a can of creamy turkey gravy, and package of frozen mixed veggies, and serve it on toast.
Give em each a cranberry, for desert.
Sh*t on a shingle, THATS what Biden is serving the American people,…and telling us we should be grateful to be getting THAT!
I almost lost my coffee reading your comment. Thanks for making me laugh so early in the morning!
I’ve done what I can do to prepare for what could be coming & I decided that I wouldn’t cut back on this holiday gathering. Right now, I’m still refusing to let them steal my gratitude.
I spent more than the national average for diner on just an amish grown turkey because praise God, I had many of the other ingredients on hand already.
God’s blessings to you & yours.
Same with us.
We are celebrating and raising the roof.
If everyone pays their fair share, then it costs nothing to feed ten people. s/
Don’t expect gasoline prices to come down to ease the cost of your trip to the supermarket
Commie Joe is sending our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Asia
With Oil Prices Up More than 60% in a Year Biden Decides to Sell US Oil Reserves Overseas to Asia
(actually, I should have said “the commies behind Commie Joe” – the ones at the Kalorama bunker)
It will cost more to drive to the dinner than to make it.
After PDJT filled it, for free!
Reversing EVERYTHING PDJT did, as quickly and profitably (for them) as possible.
I absolutely loathe the phrase “fair share”……
“What is your ‘fair share’ of a dollar another man has worked to earn?” – Thomas Sowell, paraphrased
In my ideal world Thomas Sowell’s books would be in the curriculum at every school.
May I have some butter for my roll please? No? How about a glass of wine? Would you please pass the mashed potatoes? There aren’t any? Why isn’t there brown sugar or butter or bourbon on these sweet potatoes? Pickles and olives would be nice.
Where is the green bean casserole with crunchy fried onions on top? That has seemed to be a standard for big family gatherings.
Where’s the aluminum foil? Sure, it isn’t a food but I need foil for my Thanksgiving turkey! And cranberry sauce without sugar?
Have you seen the price of foil???
Around here it appears to be on a container ship.
And how about a few more vegetable than a skimpy bowl of peas.
Only two pies, no pecan, no cherry, no peach cobbler.
For two people, my grocery bill is easily $120 a week right now, and that’s with only about four pounds of meat. The 14 pound bird defrosting in my fridge cost $30. And what kind of ingredient list for Thanksgiving is that, anyway? We always have at least twenty things we need to buy, and that’s not counting stuff like flour that we always have on hand.
My grocery bill for 3 people has gone up to at least $250.00/week if not more. We are fortunate that we are able to afford it, but every time I shop I just wonder how people do it these days. I am very concerned for the future.
Question is, WHO is this “Farm Bureau” that came up with this b.s.?
Leftist front group, apperently.
Farm Bureau-crats?
I can’t even get a six inch turkey sub at Subway for that
Could I have another scoop of Ramen Noodles, please?
Just remember! A give or take of 30 seconds in the microwave could mean the difference between something that is barely palatable, and a glorified laxative.
I can always fall back on Turkey Spam if needed. Those Turkey spamalopes are gettin’ rare anymore!
Funny how what’s inside doesn’t look anything like the picture on the box!!
The sodium content alone is a blood pressure caution!
Kind of like the current government spending programs they are trying to sell us.
I guess those ten people gathered for Thanksgiving dinner are all on diets or anorexic. Three pounds of sweet potatoes for ten people? Each person gets a third of a sweet potato? No mashed potatoes or gravy?
Eating with a mask on curtails food consumption.
That is if you’re not having a reaction to the “vaccine” they are trying to force on people! Can’t even walk into a family restaurant here without full proof of “vaccination”, and good luck getting served due to “limited” staff. Of course the mask goes with dinner too, hopefully it tastes better than what we can afford!
One half pint of Whipping cream???? For 10 people?
Looks like they didn’t figure in the gas to get to the grocery store nor over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house.
Side note: 12 rolls for 10 people? ONE variety of pie?
14 oz. of stuffing? Where’s the mashed taters and gravy? Not MY table!
With Oil Prices Up More than 60% in a Year Biden Decides to Sell US Oil Reserves Overseas to Asia
… so I guess once again we’re a petroleum-exporting nation
LOL. Sick isn’t it…
I have noticed alot of air traffic recently and am really annoyed, I guess those ole sulphur mines(the oil reserves are south of me) are being drained again 😛
Dogs maw, I worked for a drilling company, while in college, contracted to the Department of Energy. I was there when Hackberry was humming in the early 80’s. Fun times.
Later in life I would dock my boat at the little bridge right when you hit Hackberry. I spent many a weekend fishing Big Lake, the jetties….I sure miss that time.
I haven’t been back since the storms. My folks say I won’t recognize that whole area and it would make me sad.
I have to go back soon…..it’s home.
Can’t have us stocked and ready when China comes for us.
Friggin’ Traitor. Pardon my near-expketive.
Let’s Go Brandon!
“Side note: 12 rolls for 10 people? ONE variety of pie?”
PatriotDJ – we’re being encouraged to live more like Europeans ….
… though they didn’t clarify whether they meant France or the Eastern Balkans
Personally, I think they’re shooting for Biafra.
This thread is getting so funny I’m spittin my covfefe over and over.
The gallows humor is strong!
That and the power costs to cook the meal, heat and light the house.
Bingo!
It is going to cost a lot more than $50 just to feed Michael Moore.
Where the hell are they getting a 16lb turkey for $23.99? I ordered a 10-12lb turkey and it’s going to be about $35… These people live in a fantasy world…
Well…I hate to break the news but if you try buying a Perdue bird or a bird from a South Carolina Farm, (if they still have any)…we are talking about $100…for the bird alone!
If you buy in the grocery store; there are frozen buys for $1/lb…but they are truly garbage (I know for sure).
The other birds are going about $3-$5/lb…
I’m in NE Georgia….Yes, we have locals that sell, however, the price is higher.
I’m a farm girl from way back when. Anything the installed fascists regime puts forth as “real numbers” are total BS!
The only “number” they care about is the “number” they are trying to do on US! Biden’s real approval number is 2.9 %!
makes a good distraction from all the real problems though.
We’re ironically lucky that these little distractions are what motivate people who haven’t spent years plugged into the political world.
Im making thanksgiving for 4 adults and 1 seven year old and its gona run about 75 bucks what planet are these people on.
I usually have anywhere from 8-12 people, this year I have a definite 10, 2 others are tentative.
Sometimes others that go elsewhere for dinner stop by later for desert.
My spend has at times been $300 to $400 and no it is nothing extravagant – but certainly I serve many more side options than depicted here.
But with hor d’ouevrs, pies, and beverages, it adds up!
These people are nuts!!
Lucky your not breaking the rules, having so many people gathered in one place; they’ll label it a “Superspreader” event!
Oops that’s right, forgot about that Dutch!! Now I wonder where I can have everyone hide their cars lest any lurking Fauci snitches report me/s.
Should have signs on the car windows parked outside: Americans HAVING FUN here! Biden EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!!
I’d consider $53 cheap for a 4 person meal of take out right now. A price conscience home cooked meal? Probably $12.50 a plate?
I think that price is based on growing your own carrots/celery/pumpkin/
Skipping cranberry sauce and raising your own turkey in your backyard.
They are totally nuts.
??? Gobble gobble!
I wouldn’t try gobbling with this Xiden menu – one person could consume it before anyone else sat down.
Occasionally wild turkeys get hit by cars, so you could get lucky, and not have to pay for feed.
Seriously, feeling very blessed to live in turkey country. Local groceries offering a free bird with as little as $25 worth of groceries! But no freaking way 10 actual humans are going to get holiday-fed on $53.31, that’s a cruel joke, even taking out the cost of the turkey entirely.
Of course, we didn’t save 16 cents back on the Fourth of July, either. Elites pokin’ fun at us again.
Get used to going hungry.
That’s the message.
Back in the day…..me and my Grandpa would go to the Farm Bureau to get seeds, fuel and they’d give me a hat. Turkey dinners…..nope!
You should write up that story and send it, with photos, to Good Old Days (a terrific magazine)!
Red gas used to be cheep!
“FEED TEN PEOPLE for $53.31 ?
Only if horsesh!t is on the menu.
$53 for 10 people? That’s Easy! Have Taco Bell for Thanksgiving because the dollar menu is amazing!
Seriously, increasingly believe that Norah O’Donnell is the d3vil.
Big joke only not very funny. Just the ham and turkey are about $80. Pecans for the pie are $10 a bag. A quart of whipping cream over $3 , buttermilk as well. Every single item costs more. There will be at least 12 of us this year with 3 of us paying for the groceries and doing the cooking. Regardless, we are thankful to be gathering and will enjoy our time together.
Dang! I have 6 pecan trees around my house, and they are LOADED! I need to start selling pecans.
I thought the same thing this summer with my bumper crop of raspberries…
This must be for 10 Munchkins. X2 for normal people.
My wife just paid $4.97 for a stalk of romaine lettuce.
No mashed potatoes and gravy? Pffffffft.
Buy 5 Costco Rotisserie Chickens at $25 and spend the rest on a box of stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, a can of cranberry sauce and a bottle of Boone’s Farms Apple Wine. Walla!
heh, buy cornish hens and dress it up like a turkey 😛
Never had a Cornish hen that didn’t make me sick…am I alone in that??
I hear tell you can stuff them with a can of beer and the hen comes out of the oven very tender, I am not brave enough to turn on the gas stove here cause I forget to turn it off 😛
Yes..you are alone!
Cornish Hens are way better than a turkey!
I had one at a fancy French restaurant in Philadelphia in the 1970’s. (I was working with a medical author whose small staff was being treated by the publishing company.)
It was brilliant.
My suspicion is that they need to be prepared correctly.
I LOVE cornish game hens, but they ain’t turkey.
The turkey is in the Oval office, past his sell by date, and stinks.
Lesko Brandon!
I am not a great cook, nor do I shop for groceries…
but I do know the telephone man is hollering and going no brand on food
but still paying more than it would cost us to ‘pay rent'($500+/mo avg).
Someone is doing fuzzy math to make things look different.
A turkey costs ~$5/lbs here. If everybody gets 4 ounces of meat, that means 8 ounces of bird per person after bones and inedible tissue. That’s $25 just for the turkey with very small portions.
This report is garbage.
For 10 people? Not in my neck of the woods. We eat here, not nibble, our Thanksgiving dinner. Somebody who doesn’t entertain dinners very often or have friends and family who enjoy their food made up this list. Where’s the appetizers?
Everyone gets 2 bites. It can be done.
You don’t understand how TPTB do things:
One of the 10 is a Washington bureaucrat/swamp creature. He gets all the food. Everyone else watches.
Folks should pressure AOC to auction off her silly Met dress for charity.
It’s so bad in my area most people just pass by the fresh produce section.
well to start let me say i’m ground zero of the food belt n.w iowa.this week we bought 2- 14 lb turkeys at .78 cents a lb,sweet potatoes .46 cents a lb cool whip 1.38 cents a pint, regular potatoes .29 cents a lb.pie crusts 1.29 for 2,veggies-green beans, corn peas etc were .68 cents per 12 oz can, eggs .99 a dozen.for us here this 53 bucks is no problem.but i will say that veggie tray no way no how is that happening for under a buck, a lb of carrots is .99
Mi here my Iowa friends say they are being gouge on meat. But no canned veggies here for under a dollar
That is cheap!
I guess it definitely counts where you live.
Up here in blueMA a few towns away from one of the Communist Centers of the country (Cambridge MA), it’s quite different.
PRAVDA.
“We didn’t say they would enjoy it.” – the Government
What in tarnation is pumpkin pie mix.. are they talking about canned pumpkin? Ridiculous. I bought a frozen turkey a couple weeks ago, because I was concerned about having any around come Thanksgiving. I did not wait for a sale, just grabbed it and paid $2.13 lb. So my turkey was almost $28. Now.. add to that a 1.75l bottle of Jameson, and Thanksgiving is getting close to $90.
We have a shortage at the ABC stores here. Even their shelves are getting stark.
Our crackers aisle is mostly bare — there go the Ritz crackers!
I think they mean the can of pre-sweetened pumpkin pie “filling.”
Have a nice side of high-fructose corn syrup and diabetes with your Xiden meal.
Oh and as bland as can be – can’t afford sufficient cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, all the good stuff.
Allow “Joy” to explain it to you,
«Joy Reid goes FULL Stephanie Ruhle: “So, Republicans want you to believe the economy isn’t doing well, that’s terrible. But, in reality, unemployment is at its lowest point since the pandemic began. Prices are higher…but Americans are spending a record amount of money”»
Higher prices means you have to spend more money just for the basics, which mean more money or as Joy says it, record amount of money being spend just so one or one’s family can survive..
Unemployment at its lowest, when many have run out of unemployment benefits they can collect! However, why work when you can get more in the stimulus checks that the Globalist approved & ending out.
She is just a nasty woman, no getting around that fact.
Joy is so smart.
We are so blessed to have someone like her to explain things to us.
Isn’t it time for the Thanksgiving Recipe thread to get a bump back to the top?
Good reminder 🙂
First thing I noticed is 12 rolls for 10 people–NOPE Nope not at any thanksgiving meal I’ve prepared…
Then when you look at the rest of ??? thanksgiving dinner there is a lot missing marshmallows for yams, mashed potatoes which mean where’s the gravy, green & black olives, deviled eggs, chips & dip and ???
Oh yea butter which many put on a lot of things like mashed potatoes, rolls, yams, peas & other veggies & ??
Actually it seems that our inmates in corrections just might be eating much better than the general public on the outside will be. OUCH
Would be really interesting to see what the WH cooks put on the Biden’s table.
Bet if someone had the time they could go through the comments & find a couple of dozen missing items. Seems we all had things missing that others didn’t think of! I know I missed quite a few items.
Except for the remaining political prisoners under the Capitol Jail.
Come to think of it, this may be what’s being prepared for them. Garnished with a few insects and some dirt.
According to the Giant (Carlisle, PA) grocery app, I see:
Turkey, frozen, 16lb ($1.09/lb) = $19.04
Pumpkin Pie, pre-baked 8in = $5.59 (probably need 2x for this crowd)
Milk = $4.20 / gal
Veggie tray = $9.99 / 25oz (it would be better to buy 3 lb bags of carrots + celery each)
Dinner Rolls = $3.39 / dozen (need to 2x, who eats just one roll?)
Frozen petite green peas = $2.09/lb
Cranberry sauce, can = $1.39 (2x for 10)
Canned whipped cream = $3.29/can
Sweet Potatoes = $4.99/3lb bag
Stuffing cubes = $3.18/12oz
Total $57.15, to feed maybe 6? Certainly not a holiday portion for 10 people. You’d have to double portions on most of the “fun” stuff, not to mention an actual dinner salad (like lettuce, tomatoes), or $2.29 for vanilla ice cream (1.5 qt)
Farm Bureau is a joke. No one should be listening to anything those libtards say.
Just don’t forget to tip 10% to the Big Guy.
Pfft.
Bacon, butter, cheese, sugar, and mayo costs more than the misc. $3.09. I need all these ingredients on my list for Thanksgiving.
Where is the pecan pie? Red cabbage fruit salad, and wtf, no mashed potatoes? A veggie tray is not a veggie tray without dip.
The fact that a 25 percent increase for a bare Bones Thanksgiving dinner ( no mashed and gravy?) is getting any press is progress maybe they will talk about travel cost next.
Both of these items are kinda meat and potatoes local news type stories. We may even get around to the cost of Christmas.
Usually ntue cost of Christmas storey is a positive story about how much more money will be spent on retail rather then comparative costs. It will be interesting to see how they play this one.
Even with bidets .16 cent savings. SHOCKER!
Sounds like the cost of a meal for 4 people … and probably at least $135 or so for 10. The Farm Bureau’s portion sizes are probably a real fantasy … which is how they probably imagine the costs at being so low.
This must be how they “scored”the Build Back Bankrupt bill.
No Beaujolais Nouveau available this year. Supply chain problems.?
it’ll be at least $60 to pay somebody to take my Lions tickets.
