In July, Biden said Kabul would never fall. Four days ago Biden said it would take more than 90 days for Taliban to reach Kabul, if at all. Today, Biden sends 1,000 more additional troops to Kabul as it is expected to fall within 72 hrs. That is correct. By Monday the Taliban could control all of Afghanistan.
The AP is reporting that emergency evacuations have sped up the timeline to avoid the most embarrassing optics for the Biden administration. An additional 1,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne are en-route to support the previously announced 3,000 U.S. troops handling the evacuation. That is a total of 4,000 new military troops sent to Kabul to support the previous 1,000. Keep in mind the original Afghan withdrawal was 2,500 troops in total.

But a defense official tells The Associated Press that the president has approved Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s recommendation that the lead battalion of the 82nd Airborne Brigade Combat Team assist in the State Department’s drawdown.

The Pentagon has known for two years that we were withdrawing from Afghanistan. President Trump instructed them to plan and execute the withdrawal. They did nothing…
Instead of doing what the Commander-In-Chief instructed, the Pentagon supported Lt. Col Alexander Vindman (Trump impeachment), Navy Secretary Richard Spencer (Trump extortion) and Joint Chief’s woke Chairman Mark Milley (Trump attacker). So, at the same time we pray for the safety of our family to execute the mission at hand, we spit toward those flag officers who are insufferably political.
Biden will attempt to blame Trump, that won’t work. Eventually the White House will blame the military – that’s partially deserved. But ultimately the White House should have reviewed the plans -to verify they were actually in place- before doing the currently big stupid.
We all want to see our troops out of Afghanistan, but it doesn’t take a military strategist to see that we are going to have to deal with the multi-billions of heavy weapons we have just handed a bunch of terrorists. Good grief, we even left drones there. Everything about this is FUBAR.

Because the Senate appropriated hundreds of billions to federal defense contractors; private companies. Those private corporations then turn around and (1) hire the family members of the Senators in office; and (2) give money to the campaign coffers of the Senators who funded them.
In the big picture, Afghanistan was nothing more than another big circle-jerk of taxpayer money laundered to corporations and themselves.
Our entire system of government is one long collapsing mess.

My guess is that the Kabul airport is just about to run out of fuel. That means in-bound flights will have to bring in their fuel. Not a problem for flights to/from the Arabian peninsula [1200 miles or so one way] and perhaps Turkey, but you can’t do evacuation flights non-stop to the UK. We do have squadrons of KC-135 tankers in both Bahrain and Qatar today so the military birds will be o.k. As soon as the Taliban shoots down a civilian aircraft all bets are off. Then we will most definitely be back to Saigon ’75. As of this morning [8/15] Turkish Airlines, Fly Dubai, and Qatar had service to/from Kabul. Let’s see how long that lasts.

From my time working in private industry in AFG (in 06-08), with 100+ Afghans, many locals mocked the US, including some who told me they’d been previously been beaten by the Tailban for ‘standing too western’. Everything the international forces provided was deemed ‘too slow’, including 24 hour electricity for the first time.
The AFG military & police were poor, with a few exceptions. Making tea was preferred to defense. Corruption and theft was the preferred model.
Looking at CTRL-h on their PCs, showed they really, really liked porn. They loved alcohol. And at Eid fasting time, eating cream cakes behind the work building was ok, as long as I didn’t tell anyone. ( I said, I think Allah already knows.)
My most trusted western-styled worker told me how he had to lock his wife in the home with the curtains drawn, because otherwise ‘what would the neighbors think’.
I once offered to buy another guy a DVD. He wanted one with ‘no kissing because that’s not natural’.

True, but the support was no longer there for South Vietnam after the Paris Peace Treaty in 1973. You can have planes, tanks … but no spare parts, no bomb, no bullet. What are you going to fight with. While the North Vietnam started the Spring 1975 offensive. US couldn’t approve emergency $750m for South Vietnam. When that happened, the writing is on the wall. Resistance becomes futile.

Say what you want about Jimmy Carter, but he did the right thing during the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. He supported the Afghans to fight Soviet by themselves with minuscule of weapons, they did all the fighting and dying against your enemy. US can continue to support that war for 100 years w/o sweat.
The best way to win the war is not fighting it in the first place. Let others to fight for their own countries. Give them support but never get involve. If they stop fighting, it is their loss, not us.
