ON THE DAY when we memorialize those who gave their lives so America would endure, we should ask what it means a citizen of this republic. Here are the thoughts of one American, a credo for the coming millennia.
I am an American. I was conceived at Plymouth, born in Lexington and Concord, and reached maturity at Philadelphia.
I went through the fires of Shiloh, Gualdacanal, the Chosin Resovoir, Khe Sanh and a thousand other battlefields, and emerged rededicated to the ideals on which America was founded.
I am an American. Ever ready to defend my liberty and independence, to make any sacrifice and bear any burden – still, I seek no quarrel.
I march to the sound of the guns out of necessity alone. I fight not for glory or territory, or to make others bend to my will, but to vindicate my rights and preserve my freedom.
I am an American. I’m proud of my past. Words like Valley Forge, Gettysburg Address and Pearl Harbor — names like Washington, Jackson, Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt — make my blood stir.
Glancing behind me, I see generations of men and women who labored and struggled, lived and died to let me stand where I am today — who cleared the land, planted the crops, built the factories, raised the cities and made the discoveries that created a civilization which all the silent, suffering ranks of slaves, serfs and subjects who came before them could never imagine.
I am an American. While recognizing the errors that were made in nation-building (has a nation ever been built exclusively on light?), I proclaim America’s past glorious indeed, a boon to humanity, and consider myself among the blessed of the earth to share this nation’s destiny.
I am an American. Liberty is my birthright. To speak my mind, choose my leaders and legislators, defend my home and family, and worship the Creator in my fashion — these are not privileges, but G od-given rights. Governments can respect or deny them; they cannot change them.
I am an American. I have no rulers. Those who make, interpret and enforce our laws are servants. When they no longer recognize that verity, their authority loses legitimacy.
I am an American. My rights are a sacred trust to be exercised in the cause of justice and virtue. They are not the playthings of a spoiled child or mechanisms of self-indulgence.
I am an American. English is my language. Our ancestors arrived on these shores speaking everything from Chinese to Yiddish. It was English that united us, that allowed us to overcome age-old antagonisms.
From the Mayflower Compact to the latest piece of legislation introduced in Congress, our history and heritage are written in the tongue of the Magna Carta and the King James Bible.
I am an American. I have no distinctive race, religion or ethnicity. I am black, white, yellow, brown and red — Catholic, Protestant, Jew and Hindu. I came here from the hamlets of Old England, the bogs of Ireland, Napoli’s sunny shore, the Pale of Settlement and the villages of Vietnam. American isn’t a color or creed, but a state of mind.
I am an American. I welcome immigrants who are here to work and build, who identify with our past and ideals, who were spiritual Americans before they landed. Broken English is fine, as long as faith remains unbroken. An American speaks with the heart as much as the lips.
I am an American. My ism is Americanism. I reject all dogmas and ideologies. Collectivism, racism, militarism and imperialism have no place here. The rot that’s eaten away at the soul of so many nations and cultures must be fiercely resisted.
I am an American. I recognize only one loyalty higher than allegiance to our flag — faith in G od. I acknowledge that America and G od, the physical and the spiritual, are inseparable. America was founded by people of faith and grew to greatness by His grace. I pray that we will always be the instruments of His will.
I am an American. I weep over the fact that American history is no longer taught in our schools. In its place is a worldly, cynical skepticism inculcated by authors and educators at war with our basic values.
I am an American. I cringe at the collection of connivers, cowards, clowns and quacks that passes for our political leadership. I wonder that so many of my compatriots have no idea what America means and show no gratitude for the blessings that are theirs.
I am an American. My ranks grow thin; the night closes in. Whether I will be the last of my kind or the vanguard of their resurgence, only time will tell.

So Beautiful, Menagerie. Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s one of the best definition of what it means to be an American. Feder mentions “Spiritual Americans,” this isn’t eyewash and I’m sure this is what we also call “The Spirit of ’76,” which is the term the Old Patriots and Founders used to identify their beliefs when confronting wild-eyed youngsters who yearned for Monarchy/Aristocracy.

Retired Magistrate here: Just got back from attending our little country church down the road. Had a good turnout for us; about 25 people. Our church only closed for about two weeks during the pandemic. Our pastor believes that it is not the government’s job to tell churches what they can and cannot do; his motto-let the church be the church!
We sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic, heard GOD Bless the USA and sang My Country Tis of Thee. Our sermon was on the 23 Psalm, a Psalm for the Ages. It was a great time of Christian fellowship and freedom in CHRIST.
I was on closing prayer and prayed that this country would turn back to GOD and be restored to its founding Judeo/Christian principles.
So thankful to be born in this country and growing up at a time when people were proud to be an American and were thankful to GOD for this country. It is up to each one of us to do everything we can to teach our children and grandchildren how this country was founded and the true history of the United States of America.
Everyone enjoy this day and be thankful for the freedoms that we still have.

My extended family discovered a small tiny church yesterday while riding around and exploring an area in the mountains that we had never been to before.
In this itty bitty little mountain town we found a small church.
This morning we all got on our 4 wheelers, motorcycles and side by sides and rode down from our camp ground to attend services.
Our family group of 30 doubled the regular congregation and they were very kind and welcoming even though we were wearing shorts, t-shirts and boots.
Nice people.
Came down from the mountain and now have internet access and of course had to check on the Treehouse to see what was up.

My neighbors have already been shooting off fireworks and it’s only dinnertime … Last year there were TONS of neighbors setting off fireworks. Am hoping tonight will be even more epic.

I’m happy to report that in my Northeast Ohio church this morning, the priest tested our historical knowledge. He said to us, “Finish this quote: ‘Give me liberty …’ ” … and the people in church responded “Or give me death.” Then asked if we knew who had originally said this (Patrick Henry). He then read Patrick Henry’s speech made to the Second Virginia Convention on March 23, 1775, at St John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia. Then explained what liberty is. He then said again “Give me liberty” and the people responded “Or give me death.”
Hey, if it was good enough for St. John’s Church, it’s good enough for my church. Thanks be to God.

I am an American, an American State Citizen to be precise; I have corrected my status and returned to the land and soil of my birth. You, on the other hand, are most likely U.S. Citizens, corporate persons who have no rights under any of the three constitutions- merely civil liberties that your CEO (President* Biden), his board of directors (Congress), and his corporate tribunals (providing only the appearance of justice) may amend and revoke at any time with our without your permission. They’ve enslaved you. They’ve plundered your assets. They rule you.

We of course celebrate our Independence on this day but during the war history of this country other momentous events occurred that most Americans probably don’t know about.
On July 4th 1863 Lee’s defeated Army of Northern Virginia retreats from the battlefield at Gettysburg. This was in fact the Confederate’s trail of tears. The wagon train of Lee’s defeated troops is 15 miles long with the majority of wagons that carried powder and shot for the artillery to to the North now filled with wounded as it headed south. At this, the largest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War, Lee’s 75,000 strong Army had suffered a casualty rate of over 37%. 3,903 killed, 18,375 wounded, and another 5,425 missing.
Meanwhile in the western theater Lt. Gen John Pemberton surrendered his Army of 33,000 besieged and starving at Vicksburg, MS to Grant’s Armies. The loss of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the entire length of the Mississippi River and spit the Confederate states of Texas and Arkansas from the rest of the Confederacy.
With these two Union victories the course of the war changed. The Confederacy would remain on the strategic defensive until it’s surrender and the only time a significant Confederate force would go north to threaten Washington, DC would be in a desperate attempt to try and divert Union troops from reinforcing the siege of Richmond, VA.

I actually forgot to put my flag out today. Thank you for the reminder! It’s flying high now, as it usually does.
Never give up! A dark as it may seem never quit! Our founders fought on, time and time again when the odds seemed impossible. But they won because they never quit. Tine and time again the British won battles by driving the Americans from the field. But those defeated men licked their wounds and returned to fight on another field on another day. It happened time and time again from the first major battle of the war called Bunker Hill to the last major battle before Cornwallis’ surrender at Yorktown at the battle at Guilford Court House in North Carolina. The British won the field but in doing so their losses were prohibitive and they failed to destroy their enemies forces or their will to win. And so what would become the greatest nation on earth was born.
You are not defeated until you decide you have lost. Never let that thought enter your head. Never!

Never give up is one of the greatest lessons in life. And while folks think it sounds like a simple quote……it isn’t.
It’s an intensely meaningful quote.
“You are not defeated until you decide you have lost. Never let that thought enter your head. Never!”
And that quote from you is exactly right. As well as exceptional. And most folks will never recognize the importance of it.
I know you will understand this if you read it, we’ve exchanged posts before. I’m not tabbed. I was not going to re-up, but I asked a SFC what got him through the Q Course. He essentially said the same thing you said. “Don’t give up, no matter what, don’t give up”.
It’s a life lesson.

Well, while the men of my family did not “give the final measure” in the Revolution they were in it up to their eyeballs. Many in the York Militia, others in the second Pennsylvania regiment, “Henry’s rifles.” One was a Frontier Ranger. One a spy. One did translations with the Indians as he had been a captive of the Delaware.
One last full measure was given at Spotsylvania courthouse during Wilderness campaign (minnie ball through neck.) One captive at Belle Isle, one went deaf (6th PA heavy artillery). One enlisted at 16 as flag boy was promoted to lieutenant when all his officers killed.
It REALLY frosts me when I see the weird creepy crawlies steal the 2020 election and try to celebrate their weird creepy crawliness. They will always be marginal humans. and always yukky

I want to direct our attention to the most important freedom: the freedom of our souls.
Whether you think of the Puritans or any of the others seeking religious freedom (and for it) made the dangerous journey to a new land without any guarantees…or you think of a movie like The Patriot and Mel Gibson with that huge flag waving as he pushed through the British line…or you remember the march on Washington and MLK’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963…or the famous kiss in Times Square on August 14, 1945 after WWII – regardless:
None of it would have been possible without the belief and protection of what became and still is our 1st amendment.
The ability of free souls to engage in free expression and free worship to the glory of the God who made their eternal souls – is sacrosanct. This is what is at stake right now. As hard as it is to see and feel what is being threatened at this moment, we have to be strong and good for the sake of our posterity. God will help us.
If you have posted a political comment here, or used extreme profanity, I have trashed your comment. No one should have to be told to use the politics thread for politics and not to drop f bombs, which I relish trashing anywhere here on the Tree whenever I encounter them. I’ve been doing this over ten years, have yet to see a comment made better or a point more well made by using that word.

And of course politicians also swear to uphold and defend the Constitution when taking office and are the one bunch that has a huge percentage that fail to uphold that oath.
oaths don’t matter to the majority of those people.
And there in lies the root of almost all of our political/social/budgetary problems.

I believe it makes a difference when large amounts of military veterans, who have a more intense understanding of the oath, serve in Congress.

This view from the top of the Washington Monument appears to be a good vantage point for the goings on tonight, at least it appears there’s a lot of humans scurrying around. Also, it appears there is quite a flotilla of boats in place on the Potomac to watch. While I may not care for the humans currently occupying the government there, DC is still the seat of our Republic and it is July 4th and our forefathers shall be honored.

Imagine, if that great manifesto was still taught/studied in high school history class today.
Last night I found my old John Phillip Sousa CD just in time to plug it in to play in my truck at the local fireworks display. I held my head high to the tunes of El Capitan, Washington Post, Simper Fidelis, and others as I watched our big boomers and sparklers overhead. I don’t care who doesn’t like it, I will always sing proudly and loudly about my Country!
