I was appalled at the GOP leadership’s 180 degree turn from their 2012 platform (quoted on the following page, in case you have forgotten), which denial took all of 3 weeks after the election. Instead of honoring your solemn pledge in the platform, you started taking advice from Chuck Schumer (!!!) and your Washington, DC, “consultants” and decided to throw American citizens (especially UNEMPLOYED Americans like me) under the bus.
Instead of representing your constituents, American citizens who vote, you now advocate for foreign nationals who are demanding special treatment. All in the mistaken assumption that the noisy complainers will vote for you if you give in to their demands!
I agree with you – your stated plans are not “amnesty”, because there are typically modest fines or costs to pay, and therefore is not technically amnesty. BUT IT IS MUCH WORSE – it is a reward of the ill-gotten gains to those who have committed the crime of illegally entering our country, or at least to the children of those who have committed that crime.
Can you name another human activity, other than immigration, where anyone advocates for rewarding the criminal with his ill-gotten gains or ill-gotten goods? Would you reward the convicted burglar (or his children) with the stolen jewels, even with a fine? Of course not.
So why do you, most Democrats, and others advocate for this illogical (some might call insane) policy when it comes to immigration? Do you think it will solve the problem? Do you think it will stem the flow of future illegal aliens? Do you think rewarding illegal behavior discourages future illegal behavior?
A simple analogy is in order. “Amnesty”, in any form, which grants legal residency of any kind to illegal aliens is the same illogical thinking as the ship captain who declares that the incoming seawater is merely “cargo” when the ocean is pouring in through a hole in his ship’s hull. Likewise, declaring the current 11 to 20 million illegal aliens to be “legal residents” does nothing to solve the problem; rather, it will encourage more law-breaking and lead to increases in illegal immigration, no matter how many miles of fence we build.
Any form of reward, benefit, magnet, etc. is the wrong approach. The best approach is “attrition through enforcement” which works where and when it is tried. See this TV news video, where attrition is explained as “I can’t get a driver’s license, I can’t get a job, so I am taking my family and going home (to Mexico).”

And see this poll – the ONLY one to offer all 3 choices: attrition, amnesty, and mass deportations. Note that 62% of Republicans, 50% of Democrats, and even 40% of Hispanics prefer attrition through law enforcement over amnesty. This was taken when there were two clear legislative choices – the House attrition bill and the Senate amnesty bill in 2006. With the current anarchy on our southern border, all orchestrated by the Obama administration, you know very well that current polling says that Americans want law enforcement more than ever, NOT “amnesty”.

Finally, do you remember this paragraph from the 2012 GOP platform?

 If your misguided policy becomes law, the GOP will lose its conservative base and will gain zero votes from the open-borders crowd. I and all of my conservative friends will NEVER vote for any politician who advocates for, or votes for, any form of “amnesty”, “pathway to citizenship”, “probationary status”, “temporary residency”, blah, blah, blah, for illegal aliens.
Instead, we expect our elected officials to enforce all of our laws — stop the rewards, end the magnets, and they will leave, as the illegal alien in the video so eloquently explains.
Don’t ever forget the 20 million UNEMPLOYED American citizens who will have to compete with 20 to 30 million new “legalized workers” under your policy. Shame on you!!! Shame on the GOP leadership for abandoning its own citizens while pretending to be all about “Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!”
