GERMANY – Volkswagen (VWAGY) has agreed to sell its Osnabrück plant in Germany to Israeli investor Aurelius Capital and the state of Lower Saxony, paving the way for the factory to shift from car production to defense manufacturing.
Vehicle production at the plant is scheduled to end in summer 2027. Aurelius would become the majority owner alongside Lower Saxony, with the aim of preserving the site and a large part of its workforce.
The new owners plan to develop the site gradually into a competence center for security and defense solutions. Aurelius and Lower Saxony are planning an initial anchor project with Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in air defense, with further industrial partnerships and projects expected to follow.
The project could involve producing air-defense systems and components for Germany and Europe. About 1,400 of the plant’s 1,800 jobs could be preserved, according to labor officials. {source}

I agree it’s ironic but don’t think it’s a bad thing. Germany, and in fact most of the EU nations need to up their domestic defense capability.
Looking at the history a significant proportion of the Arms for the German war machine were produced in Czechoslovakia before and during the war and of course in other occupied countries during the war.
Except for the recent islamic invasion, Europe has not been invaded for a thousand years. Other than the islamics, who would want to rule over a 100 different tribes on all those peninsulas and islands?

First, young Germans are hard to find, given the demographic problems.
Second, young Germans who would join the military are very few.

A survey trying to gauge a person’s availability, interest and suitability is sent to young men and women alike. Men are obliged to respond, women and people of other sexes or genders are not. “

So the questionnaire wants to know how much young people are interested in the military, on a 0-10 scale.

There is practically zero interest in patriotism and the military in Germany: it is the result of those two wars, especially the Nazi Period.
“German militarism,” from what I have seen in my 20 years of visiting the country yearly and speaking with high-school and college students, is now an oxymoron.

They should bring back the basic BUG.

So we’re headed for a future where an Israeli company will be using a German factory to employ Turks to build weapon systems for use against Russians. What is a “competence center for security and defense solutions” by the way? Is that anything like “munitions plant” or a “missile factory” or a “military-industrial complex” by chance?

It would likely be better for all concerned to have VW making their over-engineered cars rather than over-engineered tanks — we can’t be positive who they’d like to use them against, but we can make a fairly confident bet it won’t be anything good for us.
