As we have all learned in the past week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney manufactured an oppositional narrative to the U.S-Canada trade deal in order to say no. Today, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick gave specifics about the last-minute Canadian demands that blew up the trade agreement.
Secretary Lutnick has a long-standing relationship with Prime Minister Mark Carney and during the negotiations he talked at length to both Canada’s primary trade negotiator, Dominick LeBlanc as well as Prime Minister Carney. Lutnick notes the issues Carney claimed were too much for Canada to agree to were entirely manufactured at the last minute in order to say no.
At no point was the French language ever mentioned in the trade discussions. At no time was the trade sector that involves U.S. tariffs against heavy-duty trucks and semi tractor trailers ever mentioned, until Friday at 4:00pm when Carney brought up that issue. The agreement was outlined and agreed by all parties prior to Friday; Howard Lutnick speaking twice to Prime Minister Carney personally. There was no issue until the last minute when Canada chose to make issues.
As Lutnick notes, this is all political on the Canadian side. Prime Minister Carney needed domestic political leverage to manipulate his constituents. This is worth watching:

Lutnick’s prediction that Canada will come right back to the table and accept the deal AFTER Carney’s party gets re-elected may be spot on.

Lutnick sounds like an everyman. Great talking off the cuff. Never seemed to be a stumbled thought.
About one of the best pressers I’ve seen in really ever. Talk about brass tacks, no BS and no political middle, say nothing speak. Good job and all it took was 5-6 straight forward sentences. He said more in 45 seconds that most politicians say in their entire careers.
He’s made billions, yes probably in insider ways, but he is using his billions to basically, “I don’t care and I’m satisfied with what I have.” He is having fun. He is the exact opposite of Carney. Carney is forever looking for that next dollar and doesn’t care how he gets it. Lutnick doesn’t care. He probably enjoys this job. He would probably be a good in your face POTUS.

I have a question-
Canada surely knows it has no leverage on the US and can cause considerable economic harm to itself even with European or Chinese assistance.
The US can trigger a pullout from the USMCA which starts a 6 month countdown to termination.
So what does Carney expect to gain?
He expects the mid-terms to swing congress and derail our great President.
Staying in power, keeping grassroots populists down with upcoming Canadian elections in October, and Alberta solidly within the Canadian Confederation.
Seems like that would about cover most of it.
Carney, treats the Canadians like a bunch of chumps, I THINK THERE GOING TO BE PISSED OFF ONCE THEY CATCH ON, IF THEY EVER DO.

Just a question. If LeBlanc feels free to come down and meet with people trying to create midterm chaos at Carney’s behest, why don’t we send someone to visit with Alberta’s movers? Create a little angst of our own?
And Lutnick is such an honest broker of the truth. It is insulting to use him as a witness. For what it is worth I don’t believe either side spins honesty and I have a hard time believing any deal so far was fair.
