President Donald Trump is once again asking Republicans in the senate to terminate or suspend the filibuster, get tough, and reopen government.
Trump notes a point CTH has emphasized, Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema were the only thing that stopped the Democrats from terminating the filibuster in the last congress. Both Manchin and Sinema are gone. If Democrats retake the majority of the Senate, they will terminate the filibuster.

Either we find some way to split the Democrats and get 60+ votes for the President’s agenda, or we nuke the silent filibuster. There is no other way we’re going to get federal voting reform.
John Thune is trying to do two things;
preserve the anti-Constitutional Filibuster long enough to hamstring the President–until such time as he can hand over the Senate and/or the House to his Democrat partners, aka, the Paul Ryan Playbook.
President Trump will have Victory over both, praise God!
Isaiah 41
11 Behold, all who are incensed against you
shall be put to shame and confounded;
those who strive against you
shall be as nothing and shall perish.
12 You shall seek those who contend with you,
but you shall not find them;
those who war against you
shall be as nothing at all.
After booting poor Republican voters off Medicaid and the ACA who get sick and lose their job (or are between jobs when they are stricken) unless they deteriorate into medical frailty or disability, I don’t see the GOP retaining the House. Early off-election polling shows they won’t retain the Senate either but the Republican legislature was self-interested enough to place the start date for the removals from subsidized healthcare to begin about a month after the next Senate election. So far, the conservative MSM has been lying telling viewers only illegal aliens are going to be affected and maybe the misinformation will work on the low information demographic below the poverty line for the 2026 election. But a cruel reality is on the way, with respect to their eligibility, arriving on 01/01/2027. There’s still time to patch the problem, and sell it as a benefit to get these voters back but with the middle class wanting them to twist in the wind; I think the GOP painted itself into a corner as the saying goes. The last time a Republican president was in office while the Democrats controlled both the House and Senate was during George W. Bush’s presidency (2007-2009). One thing the Republicans have going for them in 2028 is President Trump stumping for the presidency. I think that’s going to be enough for the Republicans to keep the executive branch. Of course, I don’t have a crystal ball. These are just opinions.
Not to seem insensitive here but we’ve been being stepped on and over in the private sector since NAFTA. So what’s the rush? Trump needs time to appeal the layoff of federal employees though if you ask me he could also send a message by immediately rescinding Kennedy’s 1962 executive order that granted federal employees the ability to unionize. Of course, the GOP would need to modify the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-454) (see FSLMRS, 5 U.S.C. §§ 7101–7135) to finally bring the conflict of interest for private-sector U.S. taxpayers to an end.
Yeah, so when Dems get back in to power they can grow the debt to $100 trillion with minimal resistance.
Great idea, Trump.
Goodness gracious.
Allow me to explain why the filibuster is a sham my friend, we don’t need it and never really needed it. So, back when this rule was put in place it was supposed to help the Senate to become more bipartisan but the effect today is just the opposite, at the end I will explain why. But first, here is the dirty little secret, both PARTIES (Uni Party) love this rule because it gives whenever is in power an excuse for why we have to spend so much, and why we can not get things done, like the “Balanced Budget Amendment” you see McConnell and Thune’s excuse is we can’t get to 60 votes, then they laugh with Schumer, and when Dems are in power they can void their own peoples agenda by saying, we need 60 votes, they all laugh and the do “THEIR WILL” No one in charge can ever get blamed, they need 60 votes.
So, each party out of power now has added graft, give me this, this and this or you do not get your bills passed. This is why we have runaway spending and no one can be blamed. We had to compromise……no you don’t we gave you a majority and you gave OUR POWER AWAY with a 60 vote rule that actually creates partisanship. How so? Well, if it only took 51 votes guess what ….The out party (Des now) would be in those back rooms trying to get the best deal they can get by hook or crook, knowing the Republicans are in control and will pass something.
Here is why your fears about Dems getting power and doing terrible things doesn’t pass the smell test. If they do all these things, now they will have no excuses, taxes going up will hurt the pocketbook and economy. If they push their commie agenda, the people can see and understand hays going on and vote against the Dems in power.
I read opinions like yours, and I marvel at the naivete exhibited. Your last paragraph expresses the sentiment I have heard (and even briefly bought into in my youth) that “if the voters get what they voted for good and hard, they will change their voting habits and vote for the good guys.” 5 decades I’ve heard this. I heard it during the Clinton years, the Obama years. And what has happened? The country continues to move towards more and more socialism, the Dems have become more and more radicalized, and the voters still put them in office. I give you one Zohran Momdani in NYC as exhibit A in this phenomenon.
The left in this country still owns the media, the schools, the universities, and their policies have led us to a total breakdown in the family unit, and even faith ministries. I feel very confident in saying that we now have, at present day, the most ignorant population in our country’s history. Fat, dumb, and entitled. By the time the population figures out it made a huge mistake in putting these evil socialists in charge, it will be too late. As someone else said, and I’m fond of repeating: You can vote your way into socialism, but will need to fight your way back out.
Finally, just because the democrats SAY they will nuke the filibuster, doesn’t mean they will. Manchin and Sinema were used as the scapegoats the last time. It is very likely that a Fetterman and someone else will be used the next time around. There is some truth that the majority in power likes the fact the filibuster is there because it allows them an excuse for getting nothing done. That said, this belief/hope/reasoning that the only thing standing in the way of passing Trump’s agenda is the filibuster is hogwash. Republicans as well as Democrats stand in the way of it. Thune and Co no more want Trump’s agenda than Schumer does. IF the Republicans lose control of the Senate in ’26 and Schumer regains Majority Leader status, he WILL use the absence of the filibuster to pass as much of the Democrats socialist wet dreams as he can in order to hold off (unsuccessfully, imo) a primary challenge from AOC or another leftist. I have no faith or belief the Republicans in the Senate will use the power granted them by the elimination of the filibuster, and it only opens the door to more chaos and shenanigans from the Democrats.
So, how is the government going to reopen, if the filibuster doesn’t end? Democrats will keep the shut down going until the midterms just to stop Trumps agenda!
No……keep the filibuster……
but they have to have a speaker present……
and speaking……
and while the filibuster goes on “nonstop”…….
EVERY DAMN SENATOR MUST BE PRESENT…….!!!!!!
The filibuster is the glue that keeps the uniparty together.
While you maybe right in getting rid of the filibuster is a reasonable move, I don’t think now is the time.
Why? Because it would come across as giving in to the Democrats. Also there has been so much uncertainty if they change the filibuster now, the Dems will spin it that it should have been done earlier .
I think it’s hilarious that so many people here believe that there’s Republicans who actually care about their wants and needs.
Ending the filibuster (nuclear option) does NOT need to be an all-or-nothing move.
The Senate already has limited, self-contained situations where there is no filibuster:
– The “Byrd Rule” bypasses filibuster for budget reconciliation bills
– The “Harry Reid Rule” bypasses filibuster for judicial nominations
Thune does not need to totally eliminate all filibusters. He only needs to carve out a narrow specific situation to end it for government shutdowns.
Here is my proposal:
Pass a Senate rule that whenever there is a lapse in appropriations (aka “shutdown”) of longer than 10 days, declare that an emergency situation that bypasses normal Senate rules and instead of 60 votes to end debate (cloture) it only requires 50 votes until appropriations restart.
This is a specific and limited set of conditions. The filibuster will continue to exist otherwise. It does not overturn traditional Senate order, unless there is a shutdown.
My proposal will make it very risky for a minority party to hold the nation hostage by imposing a shutdown:
– In 10 days the minority loses all their leverage. Their upside is limited. Their downside risk is unlimited.
– After 10 days the majority can ram through anything they want, any kind of bills they otherwise could not pass if they needed 60 votes. Then they can pass appropriations to end the shutdown and close the window again.
Such a narrowly limited change would not open the door for a future Democrat Senate to go wild. They would not be able to pack the Supreme Court or admit new states to the union without making their own changes to filibuster rules.
That’s not a bad idea. I think the 10 day window is too narrow, I would prefer a 30 day window. I also would limit the type of bills allowed during the suspension ONLY towards appropriations designed to re-open the government. In the current example, the CR being held up could be passed by simple majority, and then regular order resumes.
I think the Republicans and President Trump should call the Democrats bluff and give them what they want an end the shutdown or figure out a way to compromise. Otherwise, the Democrats have us stuck in an impossible position. Having the government shutdown during the holiday season is going to hurt the GOP and Trump in the eyes of voters, because most voters are not smart and they don’t do research. They aren’t going to remember or care who caused the shutdown they are going to blame the leader for not ending it. The Democrats are not getting enough blame for this shutdown; I can see CNN is already playing video tape of Trump commenting about a government shutdown during the Obama administration and Democrats are going to say why doesn’t Trump take his own advice. It’s not looking good we have too much turmoil going on and I understand it’s necessary to reset the economy and downsize government and deport all the illegals and fix everything that Biden F#cked up but it’s too much change all at one time Americans are not used to this pace and we aren’t seeing the benefit of all the cost savings and efficiency with a slow economy.
The reality is, they’ll probably never get the votes to end the filibuster. The GOP only has a 53 majority in the Senate. They need 51 votes to end the filibuster. Do you really think McConnell, Murkowski and Collins are going to vote yes? Those are just the obvious ones. Even with pressure I’d bet at a least a dozen others are never going to vote for it. There was a recent count of 24 GOP Senators who said “no way” when asked about getting rid of the filibuster. While pressure would flip some of them, I doubt it would come anywhere close to the 51 votes needed. I’d be surprised if they could get 40 votes today.
The media would spin the low votes as Trump not having support of course. Which would not help.
It’s the same-old where Congress is where the real problems with governing are. The uniparty is running the clock out, also aiming to derail most of Trump’s agenda with the midterms. Every day they delay true legislation is a day Trump can’t effectively do the things needed to win the midterms.
JMO.
I would have agreed with you back in 2021 …… not so much in 2025.
We, for sure, do not live in a perfect world but President Trump has reshaped the battlefield we are fighting on and has ways to get impossible bills passed.
Thune was exposed as not being a MAGA / America First qualified leader when he wouldn’t support President Trump’s America First policies ……. which includes getting rid of the unconstitutional senate rules like the filibuster.
A senate that is Constitutional Compliant is a requirement for our Constitutional Republic to survive.
President Trump’s America First policies are Constitutional, unlike the current senate filibuster rule (not law, just a rule).
Thune should step aside and let a true MAGA / America First qualified senator step into the leadership position.
President Trump has smoked him out.
Thune can either change his tune and be a MAGA / America First qualified senator or step aside, his choice.
All republican senators, be they qualified MAGA / America First or not, are required to support the party’s leader’s America First priority legislative policies ….. that is how two party systems work in 2025.
The democrat senators vote in block for their leader’s priority policies ……. the republicans should do the same.
Thune should get with the program or resign the leadership.
President Trump, will get enough votes to eliminate the filibuster.
You can opine that he won’t, but you’d be betting against a mighty successful winner.
Have a great MAGA DAY!
