Sweden beat Finland earlier to advance into gold medal round. Team USA and Canada are playing right now. Winner plays for Gold – loser play for Bronze.
SOCHI, Russia — A gutsy Ukrainian skier chose her people over Olympic glory Thursday and pulled out of the Sochi games in protest.
Bodgana Matsotska said she could not compete while her countrymen were being killed and is heading to Kiev to join the rebels fighting to overthrow President Victor Yanukovych.
“I don’t want to participate when in my country people die,” Matsotska told The Associated Press.
Between 70 and 100 protesters in Kiev were reportedly killed in the worst violence since Ukraine split from the old Soviet Union and hundreds more were injured in clashes with security forces loyal to President Viktor Yanukovych.
Yanukovych insisted his men weren’t firing live rounds at the people.
But footage shown on Ukrainian television of Orthodox priests blessing the bodies of fallen rebels painted their president a liar — and angered the world. (link)
The 24-year-old skier was supposed to compete in the slalom on Friday, her third and best event at the Sochi games. (more…)
UPDATE: And then there were four. Canada, The United States, Sweden and Finland have all won today and will play in the semi-finals. (North-America will play each other and then Northern Europe)
#1 Sweden will play #4 Finland and….
Both games will be on Friday with the winner of each playing for the gold medal on Sunday and the loser(s) playing for bronze. The USA women will also face Team Canada in their gold medal matchup.
To say Russia suffered a devastating loss would be to understate the severity of…
There is a national pride to the Russian hockey program. A long-standing expectation of excellence. The Russians are now eliminated from competition. (read about the game HERE)
The elimination rounds now complete in men’s hockey. Russia’s Alexander Radulov ignited the spark in the second period scoring the first of four team goals to send Russia to quarterfinals with a 4-0 win over Norway. It was Radulov who committed two penalties in the game versus USA which led to both of Team USA’s power play goals. His play today was redemption – and he was indeed the best player on the ice.

A stunning victory for Team USA in Women’s Hockey over Sweden today. Actually it so lopsided it looked like a 58 minute U.S. power-play. The United States just crushed Sweden and won 6-1 advancing to the Gold Medal match against Team Canada who also advanced with a 3-1 victory against Switzerland.
The men’s hockey teams had the day off. Tomorrow the elimination quarter finals of mens hockey begin with seeds 5 though 12 pairing up. The USA men’s team awaits the winner of Czechoslovakia / Slovakia for their next matchup. (more…)
For those following Olympic Hockey the U.S. Team won game #3 against Slovenia today 5-1 with Kessel scoring a Hat Trick, and Ryan Miller in as goalie. This gives Team USA their bracket “A” win with a record of 3 wins – 0 losses, and also two days off before their next game Wednesday as they advance to the quarter finals.
Good news and bad news for the Russian Team (also in bracket “A”). The good news is they did win their game today against Slovakia; The bad news is it took another shootout to do it.
Slovakia played a great game (as noted in this extraordinary defense effort above) and their goalie was phenomenal through regulation and overtime. Their effort, even in defeat, means Russia will most likely miss the 4th seed, and accompanying bye, and Russia will have to fight their way into the quarterfinal round with an elimination game on Tuesday.
Another Great game on schedule today is Canada and Finland. They begin their game in a few minutes (noon – broadcast USA Network) to determine who will win their bracket. If the game ends in regulation or overtime, barring a blowout, even the loser will advance to the quarterfinals as the 4th seed – due to goal differential advantage over the Ruskies.
*NOTE* For those of you who missed the epic USA vs Russia Hockey game yesterday it will be rebroadcast in it’s entirety (regulation, overtime and shootout) on NBC Sports at around 4:00pm today.
Consequently POTUS schedule immediately adjusted …
