ALABAMA – A University of Alabama athlete died after protecting his girlfriend from a collapsing wall on Monday evening.
A retaining wall collapsed on men’s swimming and diving team member John Servati, 21, while he stayed in an off-campus home’s basement with a friend, WSFA reports. He was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center and later pronounced dead.
Anna Rae Gwarjanski, captain of the University’s women’s swimming and diving team, tweeted that Servati managed to hold up the wall and save his girlfriend’s life that night, Al.com reports.
‘John Servati died a hero. Held up a concrete wall long enough for his girlfriend to get out from under it before it collapsed again on him,’ she said. (more…)

UTAH – After losing to Rep. Jim Matheson in 2012 by a razor-thin margin, Republican Mia Love will get another shot at going to Congress, this time taking on Doug Owens, the son of a former congressman.
Love, who gained national prominence in her first campaign, clinched the party’s nomination by securing more than 78 percent of the vote Saturday from Republican delegates in the 4th Congressional District against opponent Bob Fuehr.
Love said she met with more delegates during the past five weeks than the nearly 850 who actually showed up from her district to vote at the state GOP convention at South Towne Expo Center.
“I am honored to have their support. They really make this process awesome for me. This is my favorite part,” she said. “Going on from here, we are going to work hard. We are not going to take anything for granted. I am going to go out and earn every vote and really amplify Utah’s voice.” (read more)

(CNS NEWS) “We should be afraid of sharia law” in America, and Muslims here who want to practice sharia should go back to where they came from, “to those nations that recognize sharia law,” said Rev. Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
In a recent interview with the Charlotte Observer, Graham was asked, “Some say you demonize Islam, and Christians in this country have opposed building a mosque or are worried about Sharia law. Isn’t it –”
Graham, who oversees the international Christian aid group Samaritan’s Purse, said, “We should be afraid of Sharia law. We should be absolutely afraid of it. No question about it, because there’s no tolerance in Sharia law. It persecutes those that do not believe in Islam.”
“And I would say to Muslims in this country, if they want to practice Sharia law, go back to where you came from, to those nations that recognize sharia law,” said Graham. “But we have our own laws here.” (read more)

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A U.S. Navy warship reached a crippled sailboat hundreds of miles off the Mexican coast and was preparing Sunday to complete the rescue of a sick 1-year-old girl.
The transfer of the child from the 36-foot boat to the ship was expected to start around dawn, Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Barry Bena said Sunday.
“Sometime this morning as soon as they get some light they are going to take the child off the boat and bring her aboard the naval vessel,” Bena told The Associated Press.
A small boat will be used to carry out the operation and it will be safer during daylight, especially since the child’s condition has stabilized, the spokesman said. (more…)

A hunter in North Carolina says he bagged a 500-pound wild pig last month.
Jett Webb, a 34-year-old from Conetoe, N.C., was hunting boar at the White Oak Ranch Hunting Club in Bertie County on Feb. 28 when he spotted the giant swine.
“It was very surreal,” Webb told WNCT-TV. “It was a shock. It was very humbling to say the least, when you walk up on a beast that big and you say, ‘Oh my gosh. I had no idea that there could be something that big running around the woods of Eastern North Carolina.’” (more…)
