Sheeesh, I’ve been writing some deep stuff lately but all of this seems so important.  Here we have the lefty Time Magazine exposing Obama’s  political angles, and confirming the influence of Samantha Power, wife of Cass Sunstein: (Time) Why the U.S. Went to War: Inside the White House Debate on Libya – President Barack Obama says he’s intervening to prevent atrocities in Libya. But details of behind-the-scenes debates at the White House show he’s going to war in part to rehabilitate an idea.  Three weeks ago, TIME posted an article headlined, “Will Obama Order U.S. Intervention in Libya?” It began: “It seems preposterous to suggest in the wake of Iraq that the U.S. might intervene militarily to help bring down another Arab regime. But the growing danger of a humanitarian catastrophe created by Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, combined with a surprisingly broad confluence of interests, has crisis watchers inside and outside the administration seeing the telltale signs of a conflict that could compel Obama into action.”  (more…)

Short answer NO. Long answer ehhh….. (mail) French Rafale and Mirage 2000 fighter jets were in the air targeting Gaddafi’s armoured vehicles while British aircraft were still on the ground. And a summit of world leaders which assembled on Saturday to discuss the Libyan crisis took place in Paris, not London, not New York.  Mr Sarkozy was actually rather less bumptious than usual when centre stage at a press conference after the summit. He came across as a relatively serene world statesman leading a coalition of nations to which a ‘grave decision’ had been entrusted. No French President in the past 50 years has been able to present himself in quite such grandiose terms. (more…)

Is it a war, an action, an intervention? Whatever you want to call it bombs are being dropped, missles fired, aircraft assualts, artillery and tanks deployed, ships and submarines firing tactical warheads….. sounds like a damn war to me. But I digress, here’s a roundup. Reports are Colonel Gaddafi suffered a massive personal setback today when one of his sons was allegedly killed in a suicide air mission on his barracks. Khamis, 27, who runs the feared Khamis Brigade that has been prominent in its role of attacking rebel-held areas, is said to have died on Saturday night. The rebels are reporting a Libyan air force pilot crashed his jet into the Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli in a kamikaze attack, Algerian TV is reporting the claim by an anti-Gaddafi media organization.  (more…)

The Libyan uprising is entering its fourth week. The courage and persistence of the Libyan people’s efforts to overthrow Gaddafi have been met with ongoing regime brutality ranging from shoot-to-kill policies to the indiscriminate use of artillery against unarmed civilians. In addition to the current no-fly zone, the UN Security Council unanimously issued a resolution imposing tough measures against the Libyan regime including an arms embargo, asset freeze, travel ban and a referral of the situation in Libya to the International Criminal Court for investigation.

The desire to act in solidarity with the Libyan people demands that we assess the available options against the core principle that any intervention must satisfy: Do no harm (that is, do not do more harm on balance by intervening).  (more…)

(AP) — President Barack Obama is playing tourist in Brazil, on the second day of a Latin American tour meant to bolster economic and cultural ties.  The president and his family took in sights of Rio de Janeiro’s vivid extremes today, traveling from brilliant beaches to a notorious slum.  (more…)

Gee, Surprise, Surprise…… The claims of Arab League support for the Libyan attacks was obviously manipulative optics…..  Arabs will NEVER give the WEST approval to attack another Arab state.  P.E.R.I.O.D. (Reuters) — The Arab League chief said on Sunday that Arabs did not want military strikes by Western powers that hit civilians when the League called for a no-fly zone over Libya. (more…)
