Royal Airforce base Fairford, is a U.K-owned base operated by the United States under an agreement that goes back to the 1950’s cold war era. However, recently Airbase Fairford has been used by American strategic bombers for strikes against Iranian missile sites under an agreement with former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Overnight, at 12:45 a.m British police received a warning about three suspicious vans traveling toward RAF Fairford, with a tip that a coordinated terrorist attack was planned against the American base.
U.K police alerted the base, which immediately triggered threat alerts, then police intercepted the vans and arrested five males on suspicion of terrorism.
LONDON (AP) — U.K. police said Sunday that five men arrested in the middle of the night near an air base used by the United States during its war against Iran are being held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act that appeared to involve three trucks.
London’s Metropolitan Police, which takes the lead on potential terrorist activities, said police received a call at 12:45 a.m. related to the three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be traveling toward RAF Fairford, a U.K.-owned base that is operated by the U.S. under an agreement dating back to the Cold War.
Fairford has been used by American bombers for strictly limited strikes against Iranian missile sites under an agreement with former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who voiced opposition to the war after it was launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28.

Your observation brought to mind a similar story that happened to me.
I was an international airline pilot and was on a layover in London. As usual, I came down early for pickup to grab a snack and a cup of coffee. There was a couple in the lobby doing the same, and I said, “Howdy, how are y’all doing this morning?” The man said, “I can tell by your accent that you’re not from London.” I said, “No, I grew up in rural Tennessee.” He then told me that they lived in Tennessee! I then told him that I could tell by his accent that he wasn’t from Tennessee. He answered, saying that they had moved there a few years previously to escape the crazies and taxes/politics of upstate New York, and they absolutely loved their new life in Tennessee. I countered, “So you’re good conservative Republicans, escaping Democratic cesspools, huh? “NO!” he immediately shot back, “we are Democrats!” I then said to them, “So, you tell me you moved to get out of a Democrat run sh*thole and went to a sane conservative Republican state, but you vote to turn it into the same kind of sh*thole you fled from? I was also an international airline pilot and I loved the London layovers. Still miss the proper British breakfasts. We saw the neighborhood near the layover hotel – the Cumberland – get more and more arab. It became a little sporting to walk around in the evenings, and even the daytime got to be a situation where you had to keep your wits about you at all times.
People were specifically targeting our aircrews and we received several warnings. After a while I would not go out in the early evening except across the street to a nice Italian/continental restaurant and back in by 7:30-8:00pm. After that it was wild !
The young Arab guys would drag race their sports cars through the streets of London. The Brits got so fed up with it they made a rule –if caught the cars were immediately impounded and destroyed. The young Arab boys just shrugged it off — ‘my Dad will but me another one’.
The writing was on the wall when I retired 8 years ago. Before then, it was a lovely civilised place to be.

Not that surprising….it depends on which number that she called. The main number for an air base back in the day was not manned 24/7 but only business hours. The numbers for base ops or command post would not be published to the general public necessarily…..The British Police obviously had a number for the base that went straight to security or the command post.

It would not have taken someone calling to report suspicious activity for them to be stopped basically just outside the perimeter of the fort/base! Look at how those vans are parked, if they were on high alert in and around that base for a week or weeks, why did it take someone calling them saying suspicious activity. Think about it!

Saw a report this AM that described the attempted attackers as “IRGC”. I hope they’re right as it reduces their threat value when we have to face them on the ground. But that’s a commentary for another time. I highly doubt these were IRGC types infiltrated into the UK with other “immigrants”. And the reason being the general ineptness of these probably home grown and/or zealous radical Muslims. Three white vans with groups of middle eastern appearing men blocking the country road as if no one would notice? And wearing baklavas? One or two man teams might have a chance escaping detection if quickly dropped off and coming from different directions. But the forewarning tip was the key. MI-6 in their midst? If I didn’t know better (and I don’t!), it seems to be this was exceedingly irresponsible at best, and completely negligent to do that one thing that you always do with a credible threat of terrorism occurs: you respond with forces to protect the actual threat target and you set up road Blocks, and you go door to door investigating anyone seen anything unusual.

I read earlier that yes, there was an increase in the threat level with the B1’s moved to another location, gates blocked with heavy equipment and other measures taken, so someone was paying attention enough to get to that point.
If I had to guess, the AF likely has a SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) for the base which allows the US military to act on whatever security they need on the base, but base (perimeter) security and outside the base are strictly contractor/local police.
Yes, there should have been a Quick Reaction Force on the base. Not sure what publicizing that would gain anyone if there were such a force.
