Reading the latest reports on the operations war in Libya the military term SNAFU comes appropriately to mind….. The Quagmire Continues: NATO members squabble over who leads Libyan bombings…and they can’t even agree whether to assassinate Gaddafi – A war of words has erupted between the U.S. and Britain after the U.K. government claimed Muammar Gaddafi is a legitimate target for assassination. U.K. government officials said killing the Libyan leader would be legal if it prevented civilian deaths as laid out in a U.N. resolution. (more…)

Yesterday FOX news Jennifer Griffin reported (see thread below) that a British Tornado GR4 fighter jet bombing mission was called off at the last minute because CNN and Reuters reporters were on the ground in the area about to be attacked.   Fox News reported the close call incident as an example of Ghadaffi using human shields because the reporters were driven to the target by Ghadaffi officials. CNN went ‘ballistic’ (pun intended) at the report the mission was called off because of their participation and their Chief Foreign  coorespondant  Nic Robertson went on various CNN shows including, Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, and called the Fox report “outrageous”. “I’m not convinced we have much of a strategy or goals,” said Jan Techau, director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Brussels and former NATO defense analyst, said by telephone. “Our own set-up and lack of a real plan is more worrying than a backlash in the Arab world, which so far isn’t happening.”    Norway said it is keeping its fighters grounded until there is clarity on the chain of command as France, the U.K. and allies including Turkey and the Arab states struggled to agree on whether NATO should guide the operation.    “The biggest obstacle to the Libyan intervention right now isn’t the Arab world but rather differences among France, the U.K. and the U.S. about who’s in charge,” said Techau. But details of behind-the-scenes debates at the White House show he’s going to war in part to rehabilitate an idea.  Three weeks ago, TIME posted an article headlined, “Will Obama Order U.S. Intervention in Libya?” It began: “It seems preposterous to suggest in the wake of Iraq that the U.S. might intervene militarily to help bring down another Arab regime. Short answer NO. Long answer ehhh….. (mail) French Rafale and Mirage 2000 fighter jets were in the air targeting Gaddafi’s armoured vehicles while British aircraft were still on the ground. And a summit of world leaders which assembled on Saturday to discuss the Libyan crisis took place in Paris, not London, not New York.  Mr Sarkozy was actually rather less bumptious than usual when centre stage at a press conference after the summit. He came across as a relatively serene world statesman leading a coalition of nations to which a ‘grave decision’ had been entrusted. No French President in the past 50 years has been able to present himself in quite such grandiose terms. (more…)
