In a shock admission, U.K. ministers have admitted the intervention in Libya could last for up to ’30 years’.
Deep divisions between allied forces currently bombing Libya worsened today as the German military announced it was pulling forces out of NATO over continued  disagreement on who will lead the campaign.   A German military spokesman said it was recalling two frigates and AWACS surveillance plane crews from the Mediterranean, after fears they would be drawn into the conflict if NATO takes over control from the U.S.  The infighting comes as a heated meeting of NATO ambassadors yesterday failed to resolve whether the 28-nation alliance should run the operation to enforce a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone, diplomats said.   Yesterday a war of words erupted between the U.S. and Britain after the U.K. government claimed Muammar Gaddafi is a legitimate target for assassination.

Reading the latest reports on the operations war in Libya the military term SNAFU comes appropriately to mind….. The Quagmire Continues: NATO members squabble over who leads Libyan bombings…and they can’t even agree whether to assassinate Gaddafi – A war of words has erupted between the U.S. and Britain after the U.K. government claimed Muammar Gaddafi is a legitimate target for assassination. Yesterday FOX news Jennifer Griffin reported (see thread below) that a British Tornado GR4 fighter jet bombing mission was called off at the last minute because CNN and Reuters reporters were on the ground in the area about to be attacked.   Fox News reported the close call incident as an example of Ghadaffi using human shields because the reporters were driven to the target by Ghadaffi officials. CNN went ‘ballistic’ (pun intended) at the report the mission was called off because of their participation and their Chief Foreign  coorespondant  Nic Robertson went on various CNN shows including, Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, and called the Fox report “outrageous”. “I’m not convinced we have much of a strategy or goals,” said Jan Techau, director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Brussels and former NATO defense analyst, said by telephone. “Our own set-up and lack of a real plan is more worrying than a backlash in the Arab world, which so far isn’t happening.”    Norway said it is keeping its fighters grounded until there is clarity on the chain of command as France, the U.K. and allies including Turkey and the Arab states struggled to agree on whether NATO should guide the operation.    “The biggest obstacle to the Libyan intervention right now isn’t the Arab world but rather differences among France, the U.K. and the U.S. about who’s in charge,” said Techau.
