Gravatars 101 – Re-posted! (originally posted 11/20/11)

Thought I would post this back up since we’ve got quite a few new friends these days. I would’ve written a new one but I am way too busy and important – Tilda

Hullo, dahlings!
The subject of Gravatars has been on my mind today. While I am certainly fond of shapes with goofy faces on them (triangles in particular), I also love to see what images our Treepers choose to represent themselves with. You can tell a lot about someone from their Gravatar; for example, according to my current Gravatar, I smoke cigarettes and have a constantly perplexed look on my face.
Most people don’t use their real faces (I think Elvis might be the only other Treeper who does), and that’s one of the cool things about Gravatars. You can pick just about any image you want. (more…)

A Message from Your Friendly Treehouse Admins

Hey Treepers!
Things have been a bit crazy lately here in the Tree, what with the influx of new faces and opinions.

The Tree is a welcoming place and we work hard to keep it that way. I know it’s hard to keep tempers in check when involved in what seem to be endless circular arguments (I myself called someone a dummy the other day), but I am asking that we all make an effort to keep a civil tone.
To that end, any poster referring to any other poster as “stupid” “a dummy” (or similar) or saying that any other poster has an inferior intellect will find themselves on the moderation list. This applies to long-time commentors and newcomers alike, and is effective immediately.
That is all. 🙂

Constitution 101

“Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution” is a 10-week online course presented by Hillsdale College.

Featuring an expanded format from the “Introduction to the Constitution” lecture series with Hillsdale College President Dr. Larry Arnn, Constitution 101 follows closely the one-semester course required of all Hillsdale College undergraduate students.

I think this is something they do every year. I’m thinking about signing up for it this year…it starts Monday and it’s free!

Who decides?

This is Amelia:

Amelia is 3. There are a lot of things to know about Amelia, but one of those things is this: Amelia was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. Another thing you should know about Amelia is that she is loved. In her mother’s words:

“I was wrong about fixing Amelia. She never needed to be mended, repaired, refurbished. Mia is content with her life. A happy child whose perfect day involves swinging in the Pooh swing, batting her favorite bug under her toy mat, and rolling around on the living room rug to bang her legs on the dog’s head. In her eyes, her life is perfect. And after two years of having her in my life, in my eyes her life is perfect.”

And here is one more thing you should know: Amelia needs a kidney transplant. And Amelia has been denied this transplant, because she is “mentally retarded”.

There is really nothing that I can write that can convey the tragedy of this situation, so again I will let Amelia’s mother speak:

“I am going to try to and tell you what happened to us on January 1o, 2012…”

"Please explain to me how a fourth-grade science teacher is less patriotic than a drill sergeant in Killeen, Texas."

In response to Governor Rick Perry’s statement that one of the reasons he is running for President is to “make sure that every young man and woman who puts on the uniform of the United States respects highly the president of the United States.”, Dan Futrell makes the case that pretty much one any one with a job is “serving” America. Changing the Liberal Mind: Possible? Or what? *Bumped*

(With thanks to MRM, who both inspired and contributed to this post)

Hell if I know. When someone I know reveals themselves to be a liberal I mostly just hand them a tissue to wipe the foam off their mouth. Often I spike this tissue with chloroform. Don’t thank me, I do it for the greater good.
But in the event that you find yourself in that most awkward of situations (for those not following along, that would be discussing politics with a liberal), what do you do? (more…)

TOTUS strikes again

Now, I live around here. This Manion kid? He was a local. I ran in his run thingy that they do: https://www.travismanion.com/

Well, I didn’t actually run. That would be ridiculous…who runs on purpose? (Hint: NOT ME). I paid the registration fee and then went to Doylestown and jogged for like two seconds while everybody else groaned and grunted and (ewww) sweated. Way to sell it, runners. Your sport is so cool! Then I walked to the nearest bar and had a margarita.

But I digress.

I found the following tonight. Before you watch it, I need to know…how would you pronounce Manion? (Here is another hint: It’s probably not Ma-knee-in) (more…)

Jury Duty and stuff

Jury duty is great in concept, but sucks in reality. Kinda like socialism.
But I digress (there’s a shocker).
Here are the things that happened today:
I was a little bit late. I blame my children, they are all purpose like that. But hey, at least I didn’t get arrested!
I made friends with the girl sitting next to me. She was pretty cool, if not a little bitter. Also did not take kindly to me going “Ha! I have to tell Facebook what you just said.”
I went to lunch at a place that only does cash. I did not have cash. The kid working the register said “Order what you want. Just promise me you will come back today and pay.” So I did. And he gave me my food because he trusted me and he could tell I was “hungry” and his parents “raised him right”. I paid him back after I walked to the bank and cashed my 13 dollar check from the court. My take away from all this is that hippies are cute. And stupid. But still cute.
I am love with this infant, and I maintain it is not my fault that I suggested we procreate.
