Happy Thanksgiving Treepers!

Plymouth colonists and Wamoanoag Indians celebrated a harvest feast in 1621, but it was not until 1863 that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held in November each year.

The Annual Best Of The Best Treeper Thanksgiving Recipe Thread

bacon_turkeyGreat Preference Given To Dishes Featuring Bacon and Jack, Super Foods!
It’s that time of year again! Pull up a log and sit a spell. We have snacks and drinks, a warm, toasty fire and fine friends gathered round. Next week we will celebrate our  wonderful American holiday, Thanksgiving. I know that it is a great favorite for almost all of us, and perhaps your family, like mine, has the best feast of the year on that day. Our family has four generations come together, sometimes forty or fifty people. We have been doing this for years, and we never even discuss the menu any more, haven’t for probably twenty years or more. We each bring two or three dishes that we do best, and it is the best meal of the year. We even have the specialties of loved ones long gone, recipes saved and lovingly prepared by granddaughters and even great granddaughters. (more…)

Mailboxes and Old Barns – The Publication – Now Available As A Christmas Gift

mailboxesandoldbarnsI am sure many of you start your Sunday mornings off in the same way I do.  After we grab that first cup of coffee, we look forward to a stroll back in time to a place we have never been, but yet we have seen often.
We slow down and take that turn by the old mailbox, down the long predictable driveway, and just there is the old familiar farmhouse.  Just over there is the barn, and the fields stretch out in a vista before me.   The sky is an endless blue that meets the fields, but we know stretches forever.
We hear the sounds of pans rattling through the open kitchen window; from somewhere we hear the sound of farm machinery, maybe a tractor off in the distance.  Yes, my Sunday is off to a great start with Sharon’s guided tour as I begin to read her latest offering of Mailboxes And Old Barns. (more…)

Advice From An Old Farmer

Old farmerFound on Facebook, of course. None of it is new, all of it is timeless.

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled.

Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.

Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.

Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You cannot unsay a cruel word.

Every path has a few puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.

Don’t judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.

Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.

Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.

If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around..

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.

Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.

Most times, it just gets down to common sense.

Rewarding Work Ethic: A Discussion Of Skills And Jobs

https://youtu.be/aSOjYNSxR2o
Mike Rowe states in this video that there are about three and a half million jobs available right now and only ten percent require a four year degree. That means ninety percent require technical or trade training or experience, or as he says a willingness to get dirty.
Years ago a boss I had told me there was a shortage of intelligent problem solvers in the work force, blue and white collar. He said there would be an increasing need for men and women who could do something, figure out what needs to be done, and do it without being told how to. I have seen this over and over in my career and personal life. (more…)

Texas Mom's Letter To Obama

Obamacare death starA Texas single mom’s letter expressing her “thanks” for Obamacare goes viral. Yolanda Vestal posted the following letter on her Facebook page, and it has since been shared over 63,000 times. One single mother venting her frustration and problems has enabled thousands more Americans to express their outrage over Obama’s signature legislation.
I share in her concerns, and my heart goes out to this struggling and courageous woman who expressed so perfectly her feelings about a callous president who could care less about the citizens of this nation.
Dear President Obama,
I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all you have done and are doing. You see I am a single Mom located in the very small town of Palmer, Texas. I live in a small rental house with my two children. I drive an older car that I pray daily runs just a little longer. I work at a mediocre job bringing home a much lower paycheck than you or your wife could even imagine living on. I have a lot of concerns about the new “Obamacare” along with the taxes being forced on us Americans and debts you are adding to our country. I have a few questions for you Mr. President.
Have you ever struggled to pay your bills? I have. (more…)

Meet Davion Navar Henry Only

DavonDavion Navar Henry Only entered St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in his only suit, a Bible in his hands, and offered his heart to the congregation. He is 15 years old, and has been in foster care his entire life, born while his mother was in jail. He harbored secret dreams that his birth mother would someday come to claim him, but recently discovered her death in an online search. He decided it was time to let go of his anger, get his behavior under control and improve his grades in a quest to find a home, and someone to love him.
Having heard that God helps those who help themselves, he decided on a course of action. With the help of his caseworker, he walked into a church in St. Petersburg, Florida in September and told the congregation “I’ll take anyone, old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple. I don’t care. And I would be really appreciative. The best I could be.”Continue reading.
Please take time from your day to say a prayer for Davion, the purpose for this post. I hope and pray that his courageous action, his efforts to improve his life, and his prayers for love will result in someone who is God’s choice to guide this young man, and give him the love he deserves. Should anyone want more information, the person to contact is Connie Going 727-456-0600. She is with Eckerd Alternative which is the organization sponsoring Davion. Her email is [email protected]

September 7, 2013: A Day Of Prayer And Fasting For Peace

fast for syriaPope Francis has invited Catholics, other Christians, those of other faiths and non-believers who are “men of good will” to join him  in St. Peter’s Square to invoke the “gift” of peace for Syria, the rest of the Middle East and worldwide where there is conflict on Saturday.  The prayer vigil in the square will last from 7 p.m. until midnight.
“The world needs to see gestures of peace and hear words of hope and of peace,” Francis said.
“My heart is deeply wounded by what is happening in Syria and anguished by the dramatic developments” on the horizon, Francis said, in an apparent reference to the U.S. and France considering a military strike to punish the Syrian regime for a chemical weapons attack. (more…)
