Hopefully CTH readers have followed this story close enough to be able to predict where it ends. The White House has released an official and scathing press release outlining the lengthy and long-term issues with Canada and trade disputes.
WHITE HOUSE – Canada has been ripping off the United States for decades — and President Donald J. Trump is done letting them get away with it. Last week, the U.S. offered Canada the most preferential market access of any country on Earth, with deep cuts on steel, aluminum, autos, lumber, and more. Instead of partnership, Canada chose unreasonable demands, walk-backs, and flat-out rejection.
The record of Canadian abuse is clear and deliberate:
- FACT: Canada is joined only by the People’s Republic of China in choosing retaliation over negotiation. Their continued discriminatory treatment of U.S. commerce has burdened American workers, farmers, and businesses.
- FACT: Canada alone imposed discriminatory 25% tariffs and company-specific quotas on U.S. motor vehicles — measures applied to no other country. As a result, U.S. vehicle exports to Canada crashed 22% over the last year.
- FACT: Canada banned American wine, beer, and spirits in nearly every province and territory — while other countries have faced no such restrictions. As a result, U.S. alcohol exports to Canada collapsed 81% in a single year.
- FACT: Canada locks out U.S. dairy with tariff-rate quotas far more restrictive than those given to Europe, plus over-quota tariffs of nearly 300% — rates so extreme they function as a near-total ban and rank among the highest agricultural tariffs in the developed world.
- FACT: Canada has extracted a persistent average annual goods trade deficit of roughly $50 billion from the U.S. over the last decade — while refusing reciprocal access.
- FACT: Canada targeted American aerospace manufacturer Gulfstream for years. They effectively prohibited the sale of its G500, G600, G700, and G800 models while shielding its own competitor — until President Trump intervened.
- FACT: Canada’s protectionist barriers — discriminatory auto quotas, alcohol bans, and dairy lockouts — have hammered American companies. This has cost U.S. producers billions in lost sales, forced layoffs, and driven market share to foreign competitors who face none of the same restrictions.
- FACT: Without the United States, Canada could not survive. Canada sends roughly three-quarters of all its goods exports to America — and the U.S. market is where Canada gets the overwhelming majority of its money and economic oxygen.
- FACT: Canada’s failed trade policies are driving its own manufacturers south. A recent survey found 42% of Canadian manufacturers have already moved or are planning to move production to the U.S.
- FACT: Canada is doubling down on tariffs targeting American workers. Canada just announced an additional $27.6 billion in tariffs on American businesses — including a 50% tariff on American steel and aluminum, a 25% tariff on American fish, and a 25% tariff on American tools.
- FACT: The U.S. economy is approximately 13 times larger than the Canadian economy and home to over eight times as many people. The United States has the clear leverage.
President Trump said it best: “Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable. They feel entitled, but they are not a State and will be entitled no longer!” Canadian leadership chose retaliation over partnership — and America is no longer willing to carry them.

I want this to be pointed but polite. I realized, first, after wading through most of this article’s commentary, that the comments were mostly about comments. Second, that’s not what I come to TCH to read. I would much prefer to read sundance’s reportage, commentary, and analyses, and the other readers’ views on the same. Not on each other. Please, those of you who spend your time critiquing each other, find another outlet; there are lots of them. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
@sundance — I do not recall reading anything from you about whether/when you expect President Trump and Mr. Greer to start that six month termination clock ticking. Did I miss something? Would you care to comment now? Thanks for all you do.
For Sundance: here’s another FACT that you might add. It goes back decades, but around ’96-97
Canada mortally wounded the US Timber Industry with dumping cheap lumber on us. It created
kind of a cottage industry of corruption here in Georgia. Schoolboards and county governments
would insist on building things in areas that made no sense in relation to their locations vs the
purpose stated. The reason behind it? Many of the proposed, senseless locations were chock full
of timber, which was clear cut, and never reflected in the general fund balance sheet. In other words,
they were lining the proper pockets with the timber sales. Most of which ramped up circa 97.
Like a good neighbor, America was there!
The corrupt businesses here in America as well as businesses in Canada do what they want and complain like a wounded cow when exposed. Bankers led by the 2008 crash participant Jamie Dimon and his mini mi of B of A who collapsed the economy who were bailed out for billions of dollars by Bush’s Tres Sec. Paulson. He gave billions to those who were instrumental in causing the crash that destroyed the common folk investments.
Jamie Dimon has been chief executive officer (CEO) of JPMorgan Chase since 2005.
The 2008 crash was a direct result of the 1999 law passed by Democrats that loosened mortgage restrictions on poor people who were unable to pay and on people who had bankruptcies all of which forced banks to make more and more loans to people who would never be able to pay them off.
Credit default swaps. package the good mortgages with the bad to make them all look investment grade. When they ran out of good that’s when they slipped in the bad to feed the frenzy. Only reason that Barry bailed out AIG as they held all the insurance for the bad debt, the bad debt held by Barry’s handlers.
Are you saying that cheap lumber incentivized Georgia governments to use eminent domain to seize lumber tracts?
First, wouldn’t that make a lot more sense if the lumber was valuable instead of cheap?
Second, why couldn’t the landowners log their property after notice and before seizure?
I am absolutely willing to believe Georgia governments are corrupt. The rest of that makes no sense to me.
//
On second reading, you could be saying that governments were logging their own property and pocketing the profits personally. (And that citizens were failing to do their job of reporting that to the feds.)
But, again, isn’t cheap, “dumped”* lumber an incentive against this? How can it be a cause?
*Any competition at all (even by smaller US companies) is called “dumping” by Big Lumber.
Timber prices were at an all time high when this occurred. Most of the areas involved were
privately owned, so eminent domain wasn’t generally used. A lot of the land was also publicly.
owned: Dekaklb built middle, high, and theme schools in Central and Southern Dekalb on
acquired acreage. All of which was heavily wooded, sometimes in old growth trees. I estimate
that they cut ( and probably) sold off 400 acres worth, altogether.
GDOT was in on the tree cutting fest , also. They made the excuse that they had to have
a bigger buffer between the highway and the roadside on 4 lane route 78, between Decatur
and the Gwinnett County line. So they cut back 50 feet on either side of the road. I did the
math, and that worked out to roughly 47 acres of mainly pine timber.
At that time 100 acres of pine trees that were of telephone pole or plywood quality would have been worth $120k. Saw timber could go $60k to 140k depending on market supply and demand. Canadian Fir was cheaper at the wood lots.
I still have 140 acres in pine trees. They will mature when I am 93 and my daughter is 58. I do not think I will be the one harvesting them. Those timber rates are double that now and then again in 27 years.
120 K then is 250 K now roughly. Not saying that’s what happened back when, but
when you add up the bang for the buck of then vs now, it might make more sense.
” 5K to you, 10K to me…….”
Well said, and the rhetoric has begun looking like grade school name calling.
That’s because we have subversive posters now.
Al – with respect to your question about the 6-month notification…
Our discussion group is of the opinion that the notice will occur after the midterms. Primary reasoning is to avoid motivating democrats and interfering Canadians from making a campaign issue that few of their base even remotely understands – just the emotions are enough.
Anyway – that’s our opinion. And you know what they say about opinions. 🙂
🤣🤣🤣
Pro tip: look it up yourself. AI searches can find out the six month timetable easily.
Six months out timeframe is to give the parties time to come to their senses (Canada). It’s probably meaningless.
As far as reading comments – I rarely do it. Yours stuck out as the grumpy old posting monitor.
As far as your criticism of Sundance – he doesn’t have time to explain every detail. Maybe you could have looked up the timetable and posted it for the benefit of the group. You know… done exactly what you said you wanted the other posters to do.
Just a thought…
Lol!
Al, did you just comment critiquing everyone about your opinion that others should not be critiquing other people’s comments?
.
Yes, he did.
That’s like the leftist perverts who tell everybody how Jesus would not judge like you rotten MAGA-meanies are judging. They never seem to hear themselves…
Maybe you can explain to me why Sundance spends so much time on Canada, serious question for you ,cause when compared to our other issues, who the heck cares. To your other point ,it has become a clique and you aint in it. There is not much analysis here anymore. Like Citizens free press CTH list other articles , video podcast like Promethian or goes back to the treehouse old articles.
Really don’t know how to explain or take it other than this site may have lost the interest of it’s owner for whatever reason. Maybe the owner is becoming somewhat disillusioned with PT as well, so chooses not to cover his questionable actions or lack of action. Keep dropping by hoping …But it wont change the fact that I will be forever grateful for the old CTH opening my eyes to our reality.
You’re telling on yourself.
You have no need nor desire whatsoever when it comes to trying to understand the problems Canada is presenting to the United States.
Instead of reading the articles you chronically complain about, you sit there trolling and bitching about the very articles explaining the problems with Canada and the effect of those problems on the United States.
And there you go AGAIN bashing President Trump and Sundance.
At first, you came off seemingly as just another clueless whiner, even though it was obvious to most of us that you had deeper, more ulterior motives all along.
Now, it’s way past grossly apparent that you’re nothing but a troll.
You never even contribute anything of substance; you just gripe about President Trump, Sundance, and the articles about Canada while trying to portray yourself as this innocent, disappointed, mystified ignoramous.
If you don’t like it here, you can always leave, nobody’s going to try and stop you.
We’ll even help you pack.
0.o
Fuzzy you have been here a while, want to know how I know, cause I have been here maybe longer. I read the articles and quite frankly I wonder if you did, cause the continuous theme is how unimportant Canada is to the well being of the US …As Sundance puts it….they are of no benefit to us while we enable them their very existence.
Contribute to anything of substance?….There is little substance in the comments section anymore , just folks chatting it up on personal opinion and the weather of all things, thats exactly been my complaint for a while. Because all that is left of the treehouse is a chat room of cliquish people.
Use to be a wealth of analysis and reader research. And yes, I have made comment about the number of articles written about Canada…go back 3 days to see for yourself. Can go beyond that to the beginning of the tariff riff.
This is while we have midterms coming up with no vote integrity in place….Huge discussion about PT calling for a National Security measure…which he shows no sign of doing. Huge issues surrounding the deep state and no accountability…Huge issues surrounding the lack of mass deportations. While TPS has been canceled for Haitians, Somalis, Nigerians but no action on PTs part to get his pick Mullens to move. Huge issues with PT constantly moving the red line back for Iran as gas prices go up, consequently causing the price of everything to go up, as PT wants to ignore. . I could go on but we are more concerned about Canada?
It is almost like our author is deliberately avoiding PTs lack of action or visible missteps. Not bashing Sundance just at a loss as to why the lack of interest. And yes I am critical of PT who has greatly disappointed me and a great many in his base . But you would know this if you ever ventured away from here to read. You act as though this was personal , you really need to venture out of your bubble. I do not need your permission nor help packing just hate there are no people left at the treehouse who voice different opininions. You can take partial credit for that Fuzzy
Did you know the northern border between Canada and the US is quietly wide open and Cartels are moving illegals to the US?
One reason we need to focus on Canada.
Quite true. I live 6 miles from the Manitoba border in MN. People come over the more remote spots and are seen hanging out on quiet stretches of county road and when you drive by about 10 minutes later they are gone…picked up. What I wonder about, is WHY these illegals would leave such a FAR MORE WONDERFUL (so we’re told) country like Canada to sneak into the US where we’re all racists and MAGA and all that horribleness?!
Re termination, IIRC, he’s said several times that he expected notice would be given once the Mexican deal was finished.
(I’d guess timing for that depends partly on midterm results.)
Mexico’s new ambassador to the U.S., Roberto Lazzeri, said on Friday that Mexico was expecting to reach a new deal by the end of the year
What are we going to do with all our new space, now that there is going to be another kid kicked out of the basement?
Remodel and save money. Maybe put up Trumps picture on illuminated billboards at every border crossing facing towards canada. They don’t have to like it, but there isnt diddly they can do about it.
The Canadian libtards are as clueless as the USA libtards. The Trump bell rings and they start salivating, oblivious that they are salivating over a massive shitburger that they will be forced to swallow in whole.
Here are just some historic tariffs Canada hits America with.
Milk: 270%
Cheese: 245%
Butter: 298%
Chicken: 238%
Sausages: 69.9%
Barley seed: 57.8%
Bovine/meat: 26.5%
Cars: 25% HVAC: 45%
Vacuums: 35%
Cable boxes: 35%
TVs: 45% Steel: 25%
Aluminum: 45%
Copper: 48%
Take a guess how much financial aid the U.S. sends Canada EVERY YEAR
and how much military defense $$$$ the US provides
HIT THEM HARD
The U.S. provides negligible financial aid to Canada, totaling approximately $259,300 in fiscal year 2024 and $206,400 reported so far for fiscal year 2025. The U.S. does not send annual military defense funds to Canada; instead, both nations share costs for continental defense through NORAD, with the U.S. covering an estimated 60% of specific NORAD operational costs under a 1985 agreement, though no precise annual total is publicly disclosed.
Experts reject claims that the U.S. subsidizes Canada’s defense by hundreds of billions, noting that Canada spent $29.3 billion on its own defense in 2024 (1.3% of GDP), while the U.S. spent $997 billion (3.4% of GDP).
1.3 percent is minimal; their ability to project any military power is nil. They are backing out of buying F-35s, thus denying the integration of their air defense into NATO and US. Canada is essentially defenseless.
Why isn’t anyone pointing out Canada’s collusion with the Chinese Communist Party sending more fentanyl and poor quality goods goods to Canada. to export to the US ?
The Chinese CCP have already taken over major areas in Canada and are breeding more that the French Canadians who own Toronto, Montreal, Quebec and other areas in Western Canada.
We subsidize a lot of the NORAD costs. Canadians come down to NORAD to get healthcare. I know of a sergeant who came to NORAD with one purpose, to have babies. One three year tour and she had two babies. Others get any and all elective surgery done from vasectomies to braces.
Many of the missile warning sensors and systems in Canada are funded by the US. They also rely on our space based sensors, satcom, and military GPS.
The Canadians in NORAD do more work than the guys at NATO though.
There is no medication for TDS!
Thanks to you Sundance we CAN predict where it ends!
America- 1,000,000
Canada- 0
And Bugs said it best, “That’s All Folks”
I thought it was Porky Pig that said that.
London banker, Mark Carney, doesn’t give a rat’s ass about beleaguered Canadian families trying to make ends meet!
He is a flunkie of the British Imperial crown, making a Hail Mary pass to his Democrat allies in the States, hoping to see MAGA Republicans lose both Houses of Congress in the mid-terms so President Trump will be impeached and removed from office before Canada’s sputtering economy is crushed in an unwinnable showdown and ceases to be a functioning nation!
Carney, the delusional globalist bureaucrat, still sees this looming trade war as a political battle while Trump, the eternal pragmatist, sees it for what it really is…purely a matter of economics!
The fact that Canada, a supposedly developed country, has 1/8th the US population but only 1/13th the GDP is already a damning indictment of it’s embrace of renewable energy and total rejection of fossil fuels!
Now the indicted are about stand trial for the economic murder of a Canadian economy that’s already on life support!
Democrats Appear to Be Colluding with Canada’s Anti-Trump Government
https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2026/08/25/democrats-appear-to-be-colluding-with-canadas-anti-trump-government/
Of course they are. TDS is real and the left doesn’t care who gets eaten up, destroyed or damaged in their wake.
Not very nice that China is waging economic war via proxy of Canada. Trust the case can be made to the Canucks that it’s a fools trade. Covering for Chinas abuse of World Trade, labor (poeple), and the environment is not a good look.
Another connection between Washington Democrats and Carney is Gerald Butts, the former political adviser and strategist to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He is well-known in Canada as the architect of Liberals’ climate and net-zero policies, making him a natural ally of Carney. Butts presently works with Prime Minister Carney’s wife, Diana Fox Carney, at Eurasia Group, where they both hold titles of senior advisor. According to public records, Eurasia Group received multiple consulting contracts from the Canadian government between 2011 and 2024.
Carney and Butts also hold significant ties to John Podesta, the longtime Democrat powerbroker dating back to the Clinton administration where he served as White House Chief of Staff. Podesta chaired the Hillary campaign in 2016 and would later serve in multiple climate-related roles in the Biden administration.
Hillary Clinton was a featured speaker at a Canada 2020 conference in 2014, an event that also served as a fundraiser for the Liberal Party of Canada. In 2017, another Canada 2020 conference reportedly doubled as a fundraiser for Trudeau and featured Obama.
Matt Taube, a former speechwriter for Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, told the New York Post in 2025, “Podesta and Butts clearly know each other, but Carney’s campaign has been very careful not to tie him to anyone too specifically.”
Podesta reportedly helped facilitate a private meeting involving Carney, Obama, and Soros at the former president’s May 2026 speech in Toronto.
Several weeks later, they held another private gathering in Nova Scotia. That meeting included federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly; Soros and his wife, Huma Abedin, a longtime Hillary Clinton loyalist; and Frank McKenna, who currently serves as deputy chair of TD Bank Group and chair of Brookfield Asset Management.
These intertwined relationships factor heavily into the current status of Canadian-U.S. relations.
Thank you. This was very informative. 🙂
Get the Voice of America to beam truths into canada. Broadcast into canada using shortwave wifi digital tv on every radio band and all means possible. Make it sound like canada is going behind the berlin wall. When someone says we are at war, you have to treat it like war.
Sounds to me like the U.S. has technology we know nothing about, if need be us it! Has any country on this planet show the U.S. any kind of mercy. All they have done is lie cheat steal and attacked us using our own media plus with help from our own businesses and government.
I’ve worked hard my whole life it seems and have done well I’m sure most if not all here have also. I wonder how much better I would have done if all this corruption theft were not taking place all these decades.
The fact-filled statement from the White House is an appropriate preamble to terminating the current trade agreement.
Those who cannot succeed in a fair trade system MUST CHEAT. It is the same as with elections. The world is so full of corruption because a rigged world is the only way predatory scoundrels can prevail.
It says a lot that our “predatory scoundrels” in CONgress have NO interest in passing sensible voting legislation in time for the midterms via the Save America Act.
What can these predators possibly be afraid of? Fair elections?
It also says a lot that our “Republican” majority cannot cough up even one Republican CONgressman (when one is all it takes) to call a one day recess during President Trump’s two terms in office, which would finally provide “their” President his only opportunity to appoint his own cabinet without predatory scoundrel gatekeepers.
It says a LOT.
Bigger Govt = Bigger Corruption, Fraud, Waste, Theft, Crimes Against Humanity. Bye, bye Freedom, Liberty and The American Dream! Enemy #1 is Democrats, Muslims and RINO’S! All believe their own lies and worship Satan!
If Canada becomes our 51st state, these morons should not be allowed to vote. Better yet, just turn Canada into an administered territory with limited budgetary commitments.
Oh, Canada…..LOL!!!!
No Buckees for you Canada!
I know this sounds stupid as hell, but I wondered when I learned about Canada cozying up to China. Is this a future way into the US? By that, I mean an invasion. Given the state of things here and China’s penchant for long-term thinking, do they see that by slowly absorbing Canada, they can establish a springboard for some physical takeover of our country?? I know it sounds foolish but…
I would not call it “foolish.” We can look at Islamic nation groups, for instance, and see that your worry is well-founded. However, as the Chinese birthrates are plummeting faster than our own, I think we’re safe -for now. (China never does anything unless it is absolutely assured 100% success. Unless they plan on deploying some sort of lethal toxin, population replacement is the only dominance they’d have against us).
There’s already a gang invasion going on into the United States from Canada.
They’re bringing in drugs, drug manufacturing precursors, along with weapons and human trafficking.
Some of the gangs are Punjabi and native Canadian.
The Chinese gangs are already here.
The gang and trafficking activity is why there has been such an increase in serious crime in the northern border states.
To your point, though, there is a Chinese military presence in Canada.
It’s not foolish to ponder the possibility of a military invasion.
It’s an unlikely scenario, however, if it did happen the Chinese military would utilize the gangs as mercenaries.

Last night World News Tonight led with Trump’s 50% tariffs on Canada and Ottawa hitting 700 U.S. products, then cut to “amid the president’s new trade war with Canada” a report that tariffs cost households nearly $1,100 a year.
By doing this they made it look like the Canadian kerfuffel will cost the average American family $1100 per year when the actual number is $30 per year (the $1100 figure is for all tariffs world wide).
I don’t know the ins/outs of Canadian and American trade.
From what I can tell, America has treated Canada very nicely over the years.
But it’s been mostly a one-way street.
Personally, I would not mind if President Trump let this play out for about a year so the Canadian people can experience what their lives will be like without the generosity of America.
Sometimes a little humble pie is good for all of us.
MORE re TRUMP vs CANADA – WOULD TRUMP be subtly alluding to leaving USMCA ?
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday it is “time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore,” just days after trade talks between the neighbouring countries broke down.
“I had a deal, that was a pretty good deal, you know, quite good,” Trump told Glenn Beck in an interview.
“They don’t have anything that we have to have, okay, we can get by. I mean, there are a couple of things that would make it a little inconvenient, but we can get them elsewhere. And it’s time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore,” Trump said.

In a “Riddick” episode a monster that had no eyes was attempting to eat Riddick. He slid underneath and opened up its belly and all its entrails fell out and the monster began eating them.
Thumbnail of Canada! Trump being Riddick!
How many Canadians have overstayed their 6 months or are working in the United States illegally? Word has it from my research it could be easily over 1 million based upon number’s published before his first term! President Trump and Marco Rubio should be looking closely and sending them back!
Which is why England and other globalist western nations are going to start selling our Bonds in the next month which will pickle us bigly.
I sincerely hope that PDJT Admin will let the USA and Canadian people know that Canada allowed the CCP to run military maneuvers in The Great Lakes.
This was a serious breach against the USA by Canada.

Thanks cjshecky. I just won $10,000 in the prediction market that within 2 hours someone would call me a troll. But your favorite troll? I am honored
Last week Canadian Fir wall studs were over a dollar less than Georgia-Pacific pine wall studs. I am in south Georgia where the biggest crop is pine trees and I see log trucks daily. This week GP pine studs are still the same price but the fir studs are 60 cents more than the pine. Tariff fever?
