The Canadian government has cancelled their participation in a joint U.S-Canada ribbon cutting ceremony because President Trump has hurt their feelings with a new tariff announcement.
It is the official position of the Canadian government not to join in any collaborative celebration. This comes on the heels of the Premier of British Columbia, David Eby, asking his staff to revoke the Canada statement celebrating America’s 250th Independence Day. Take that Trump! {{harrumph}}
CANADA – A planned joint ceremony on Friday between the U.S. and Canada marking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been canceled after President Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian imports, including alcohol and dairy.
“In light of trade action threatened by the United States earlier this week, it would be inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event between the two countries,” Jenna Ghassabeh, a spokesperson for Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, said in a statement to the Associated Press.
“We remain committed to opening the bridge on July 27th, and to celebrating this milestone among Canadians on July 24th,” she continued. (read more)

This is most likely the 47th guilt trip that someone has tried to throw at President Trump, today.
It would be funny as all get out if we blocked their side of the bridge.
With Canadian Truckers….
Blowing their horns incessantly throughout the night
Complete the job started in 1812.
Sept 10, 1813, the Battle of Lake Erie. We spend summers at Put-in-Bay OH (S. Bass Island in Western Lake Erie) where in the nearby waters the battle was fought and won by the Americans, led by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, with his “Dont Give Up the Ship” battle flag. A monument was built on the island at the centennial of the battle and since then there has been a US National Park commemorating this, called the Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial, hailing the longest undefended border in the world between two countries, the US and Canada. Three flags fly there equally, those of the US, Great Britain, and Canada. The island is a big haven for boaters from all over and celebrates Canada’s Victoria Day which comes right before US Independence Day. One is able to purchase Canadian beer without a problem, but their very good wine from nearby Pelee Island is not available this summer. We should see what will transpire in relations in the next couple of weeks.
OK but tomorrow is the anniversary of the Battle of Lundy’s Lane in 1814 so there’s that.
Are they expecting us to beg them to show up?
apparently they boycotted FL all last winter. Nobody told us
Less bad tippers.
Fewer. /grammarpolice. 😉
A few less would be good.
Ain’t that the TRUTH! Scary. I used to be a Dockmaster. The Canadians would get a roll of US quarters to tip with at bars, restaurants, or at the dock. Sometimes a “Loony” (Canadian coin that has a bird on it and same size as a quarter) would slip in. . . . I’d flick it back on their boat as they were leaving;-) This was 25 yrs ago. They had a chip on their shoulder even then. Would come in and tie up for the weekend with CASES of Molson’s or LaBatt’s beer aboard. You aren’t allowed to have alcohol on the dock itself so they had to go to the bars and purchase whatever was available there. However, Sunday afternoons they would pull out from their dock space and leave behind large plastic trash bags full of empty beer cans they’d consumed on their boats. The trash dumpsters are just a few feet away on land off the dock, so they were just giving us a big middle finger — they thought, in their petty minds. Tiresome people.
Was getting tired of those French Canadian accents in South Florida. Didn’t miss them at all this year. And it was one of the best Florida winters in 25 years! Double bonus!
Remember back in the day when we’d get Canadian coins mixed with small change from purchases made at local businesses? Yep, the Canadians snuck them in when buying things and the businesses were stuck with them, so they in turn snuck them back to us Americans! That didn’t happen often, but when it did, we always got pissed off! One particular coin was passable for one of our coins, and at a glance we were unawares until we emptied our pockets at the house! Coin-operated machines got gypped by Canadians all the time too!
Used to get a bit of Canadian coins in Milwaukee growing up. But what I remember was the size was slightly different and the coins would fall through soda machines. But back then Canadian dollar was pretty much on par with ours so it wasn’t a super big deal.
So true. Didn’t miss them at all in the Gulf Beaches either.
Did anyone miss them?
Yes. It hurt our economy in Hawaii. Of course they were noisy about staying away.
We took a hit in Hawaii.
Ghassabeh is an Iranian surname.
According to Forebears 14% live in Iran.
86% in four Western countries: US, Canada, UK and Germany
The highest incidence is in Canada.
Interesting. TY
Since they booed our national anthem I really don’t give a hoot what they “feel”.
The Canadians I have recently spoken with all hate Trump. It’s so obvious they believe the news they are being fed and not getting the true story about how one sided the trade agreements are. It’s sad. I love Canadians . Great people
They’ll Find Out soon enough how much they’v been lied to by their ‘government’.
Elbows Up!
My father says Gordie Howe would put his “ebows up” into Carnie’s face if he were still alive today.
watching these twatwaffles get their comeuppance when Trump pulls out of the USMCA is going to be glorious!
They could save a lot of money by breaking a bottle of Crown Royal on the bridge to christen it. Save the velvet bag of course.
Sadly, the Crown Royal Vanilla and Salted Caramel are quite good!
I knew about the vanilla one but good grief, they are making everything salted caramel these days.
Probably not a whiskey that you’d want to drink too much of.
I prefer whiskey-flavored whiskey and beer-flavored beer and often together! Call me old school!
I saw a hilarious King’s robe costume made of stitched-together Crown Royal bags years’ ago at the Put-in-Bay fall Employees Parade!
Always loved those Crown Royal bags. My brothers and I had one as kids; used to play that it was full of pirates’ booty, or treasure from a dragon’s hoard.
Friday’s ceremony cancellation would be a great time to announce another cancellation. Tell Canada and Mexico the USMCA is officially cancelled.
…and you got 6 months to figure things out
Nice picture of American player whose dad couldnt hold his Canadian beer and rolled his pick up truck when he was an 18 year old rookie in Winnipeg.
Cops covered it up and he bad mouthed the city when he left.
The Canadians can have all the Tkachuks!
what a pathetic baby.
I hope they cry like this when we absorb their country and ban the maple leaf flag.
Dont open the bridge until they show up, play our anthem, smile, and say thank you President Trump.
What does Gordie Howe think about the cancellation?
Hey Canada when you are in a hole QUITE DIGGING.
He died in 2016, so he couldn’t be reached for comment.
TY
Did not know that.
Guess you can tell not a huge hockey fan.
🙂
I do have an original 1970 Houston OILERS t shirt tho. Get lots of comments on it.
Put a toll booth on the US side of the bridge and charge anyone with Canadian plates US$50 to cross.
Payable in $50 in AMERICAN currency – not Canadian.
Have ATM machines at the booths for those that need them.
He’s still voting Liberal Party. Count on it.
If you listen closely, you can hear him spinning!
Gordie Howe…Canadian but not a p&ssy. He would not be welcome in today’s Canada.
Just for that, we’re changing the name to the Gump Worsely International Bridge.
…or better yet, The Bridge of America.
The Gumper was a tough guy. Saw him play several times. Interviewed him a few months before he died. Good man.
Back in the day when real goalies went maskless!
I’m so happy someone got my reference. I was too young to see him play. I would have been a Terry Sawchuck fan though.
Boy that brings back memories. Hockey camp at the Duluth curling club. Gump Worsley, Caesar Moneago and the big guy himself Ted Harris
Now you’re talking
GREAT Title!!!
If Canadians hate Trump, they hate the American people. It’s really that simple. Trump was elected, despite a hurricane of hatred aligned against him, but he is our popularly-elected President.
We should accept Canadians as our enemies and act accordingly. They have made the choice to hate us. Canadians do not have the right or luxury to separate our leaders from us and expect us NOT TO FIGHT BACK.
For a loooong time Canada and most of the Free Word has ridden on the U.S. coattails. IMESHO, time for Canada to find reality and try to support the Free World!
I live in a border city. There are very few Canadian plates on cars here now. They used to come for the cheaper gas, and shop for goods, remove the packaging and dump it on the ground or the nearest accessible dumpster so they didn’t have to pay the HST tax. Many are terrible drivers. The truck drivers are worse
“President Trump has hurt their feelings with a new tariff announcement.”
Canadian government “leaders” behaving like spoiled, petulant children throwing a temper tantrum when things do not go how they wish, picking up their toys and going home out of spite.
I’m hoping Trump shows up and declares it the Brandon Bussi Bridge.
Nice ring to that.
Good Long Island kid,
Down here in the South, “Canadian” is code for “Democrat”.
Seriously.
0.o
Canadians are bad neighbors.
They are like the guy in the neighborhood who never mows his yard does not trim the shrubs house paint is peeling broken window with a slap of wood in the hole broke down cars everywhere and the guy looks like a slob sits on his dilapidated porch drinking beer picking his nose all day every day. That is the Canadian hoping the King stops by to help him out, with the big a$$ neighbor threating to kick his butt if he does not clean up his act and stop deprecating the rest of the neighborhood.
Come a point where you hope they just move!
LOOK AT CARNEY’S BODY LANGUAGE – A DISASTER FOR HIM. – Video 3 minutes – He GOT CAUGHT IN A LIE !!
Carney says he ‘should have been clearer’ about new Gordie Howe bridge agreement
Prime Minister’s Office confirms new deal would cost Canada up to $320M
When pressed about the contradiction during a news conference on Thursday, the prime minister said he “should have been clearer” in his original comments and that the new revenue-splitting deal with the U.S. doesn’t account for debt repayment.

The Canadian PM truly has the people brainwashed. We see that it is now Canada tasked to fight against the Americans, with Bloomberg to boot. Oh well. Another one bites the dust.
Damn! I wonder how Gordie Howe is taking this Canadian slap-shot?
Canada tried playing bridge. But they got Trumped.
So they gave the opmening ceremony the elbow.
So the Canadian government is boycotting the opening ceremony for a bridge named after a Canadian hero? Brilliant.
Why get angry at the US? their own PM signed off on the deal to open it.
Canada digs its own grave
Just get some restoed D-9s and start from both ends in opposining directions. The AlCan was built pretty quick that way. Don’t need a wall, just a 50 yrd cleared strip and some organic based decomposable safety tape. Nothing goes across. So much for the worlds longest unprotected border.
MAGA!! 👊👊
It’s actually dangerous to have such stupid people share such a long border with the US.
Caption: Petty Peon
Big mad Snow Mexicans. Still mad about the Olympics.
And your bridge Canada leads to where?
You will celebrate the opening of a bridge with only Canadians while if the bridge is used leads one to America.
Hmmmm!
Are Canadians REALLY this moronic? Are they REALLY this stupid and dummied down by their government and their government owned media?
I guess so!
Bad timing for a new bridge, IMO. We’re just going to have to seal the US/Canada border when we withdraw from the USMCA and the Canadian economy collapses.
