The European auto industry is a case study on how short-sighted trade policy goals, results in consequences.
Previously, German auto companies like Volkswagen entered into trade agreements with China and began manufacturing their vehicles with immediate financial success in the market. However, it did not take long for Chinese auto companies to reverse the engineering and begin to deliver the same quality vehicles at much lower prices.
The Chinese then stop purchasing the Volkswagen vehicles and purchase the cheaper version, while simultaneously begin exporting those same vehicles into the home market from where the technology originated.
Today, with a double-digit decline in production, Volkswagen announces they will cut almost half of their models due to diminished sales.
BLOOMBERG – BERLIN — Volkswagen reported weak sales numbers on Friday, a day after the giant German automaker announced plans to slash the number of models by nearly half as sales plunged, particularly in China.
The Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said group sales fell 8.6 per cent in the second quarter to just under 2.1 million vehicles, with sales in China alone plummeted by more than one-third.
After a board meeting on Thursday, Volkswagen said its “fundamental realignment” over the last three years had reached its next phase, announcing plans to streamline the model lineup by up to half, without providing specifics.
CEO Oliver Blume laid out plans to make VW faster and more competitive through less complexity, focused technologies, better alignment across regional markets and reduction of overcapacities, among other things, citing an “increasingly demanding environment.”
Among its main brands, the core Volkswagen unit saw deliveries of slightly over 1 million vehicles in the second quarter, a drop of 14 per cent from a year earlier. Deliveries at Audi declined 8 per cent and those at Porsche fell 18 per cent. (read more)

I have a 2015 VW TDI that I got in 2018. Its great, I love it. I’m keeping it until its dead or it tries to drain the bank account with repairs.

In the late 80’s, I had a ’82 Olds Cutlass Supreme V8 diesel. The American diesels of that era were nothing compared to the German diesels. My engine killed itself… turns out that engine was not robust. But it sure sounded good, even with stock exhaust.
One guy with a souped up care wanted to race me… He revved his engine, I revved mine. My car sounded much better so I declared myself the winner. The light turned green and he went off like a shot. Meanwhile my car could do 0-60 mph in 30 seconds, I just pressed normally on the accelerator through the intersection at got all the way up to 35, the speed limit. Plus, I was close to home and not about to race in a 35 mph zone. It got decent mileage for a V8.

The rules said nothing about how the cars ran after testing. The rules were written with the assumption… well, y’all know about assumptions. They should have specified that the test was to see how the engine performed under normal operating conditions.
The head of VW at the time was fired for not fighting the ruling. VW lawyers could have tied up the case for years and just a few millions until all the cars hit the scrap heap.
I’ve got a 2012 VW Jetta Sportswagen 2.0L TDI 6-speed manual and I love it. Just breaking it in at 172K. I waited out the “diesel gate” fix, got a $1000 card from VW during that time (1/2 had to be spent on VW parts) and when they I finally got the fix (software update) I lost 4 mpg but I still get 46 on the highway, 39 around town and I drive safely but effectively (wink, wink).
Oh, I also received a check for my pain and suffering of $5,900 from VW after verifying the fix based on year of car. I’ve bought plenty of parts for “Frau” (filters, oil, etc) over the years. Even have a complete clutch/flywheel replacement kit ready when needed.

Typically sell-back clauses are highly limited with built in quotas vs time and limiting compete clauses built into the agreements. China Inc. got sweat heart agreements.

Everybody always buys into the China Inc. Theft claim … and never considers China Inc. is a Nation-Corporation. Business Deals are the life blood of the government and China Inc. is actually run by MBA’s and International Business Lawyers.

You can buy a Made in USA carry on bag for $350 or find another one for $60 made in China or wherever. For some that’s an easy decision. Sixteen years ago I bought the Made in USA bag. I still have it and it looks great despite being carried over most of the globe. I doubt the cheaper one would still be around.

I’ve owned two Volkswagon Beetle’s in my lifetime. Both used cars. Crank down windows, manual transmissions. Not one electronic chip involved, and the engine in the back. I kept the second one long enough to be able to see the road under the front floorboard.
I still laugh when I think of a giant wet snowstorm that hit DC. when I first moved there. That VW was like a snow plow going up Alaska Avenue (not sure about the street). All wheel drive hadn’t been invented yet.

No wonder China’s first “people’s car” was the small VW Santana. Mainly in dark blue. The streets desinged mainly for bicycles, were full of VW’s . China leapt past the more typical intermediate Tuk-Tuk stage of motorized transport, as in seen in the rest of SE Asia and went directly from bicycles into western automobiles.
Germany planted the seeds, if you wanted to bescome part of the western economy, follow the German lead. Guides bragged China now had traffic jams too, as a badge of modern civilization. It took forever to make a left hand turn against traffic as traffic rules and stop signs were not yet part of the new motorized auto scene China. But Germany had pulled off a marketing coup, planting seeds well before China first dabbled into the western economies. McDonalds, Kentucky Friend Chicken and Stabucks soon followed .
Later China returned to their 1930’s memories of the Buick being the nostalgic symbol of class and style. GM hit the jackpot on that one. It’s most likely not reverse engineering. China’s usual method is to use the existing manufacturing lines to fabricate extra parts above what they are they contacted to make, then they hand them off to another state run company to assemble. In essence, the German auto companies have been paying China to rip them off.
